Electric vehicle ownership is expanding for two reasons: its technology features have enhanced fuel economy, and the number of vehicle emissions regulations is increasing. Battery performance has a large influence on the capability of electric vehicles, and even though battery thermal management has been actively researched, specific technological improvements to battery performance are not being presented. For instance, many industrial applications utilize vortex tubes as components for refrigeration machines because of their numerous intrinsic benefits. If electric vehicles incorporate vortex tubes for battery cooling, performance and efficiency advancements are possible. This study uses a counter-flow vortex tube to investigate its temperature separation characteristics, based on the back pressure of the cold air exit and the difference between the inlet and back pressures. The experiment uses a vortex tube with the following parameters: six nozzle holes, a 20 mm inner vortex diameter (D), a 14D tube length, a 0.7D cold exit orifice diameter, and a nozzle area ratio of 0.142. The measurements prove that the temperature difference between the hot air and cold air decreased because of the flow resistance of the hot air and the backflow phenomenon at the cold air exit. The flow resistance causes the temperature difference to decrease, and the back pressure of the cold air exit influences the flow resistance. The results show that the back pressure significantly influences the efficiency of temperature separation.
The rise in pressure across the impeller blade of an axial flow fan depends on the angle of attack. At a low back pressure, the air volume will be large and the angle of attack is small. The gradual increase of the back pressure approached stall zone which is not stationary but travels blade to blade passage. In consequence, a region occurs around these blades with large vibration in the flow. To avoid these stall operation, the stall detector in the axial flow fans has been designed to detect stalling condition with a manometer or differential pressure switch by electric mechanism.

Two mufflers for a large-size sedan are suggested aiming (1) sporty-sound and (2) quiet-sound as well as both satisfying low back-pressure and low manufacturing cost. Transmission loss prediction considering heat and flow may increase the accuracy and reduce the development cost in muffler design; thus, GT-power prediction considering heat, flow, and acoustics is utilized. By understanding the fundamentals of flow-acoustic theory in small orifice(hole), an effective muffler design concept is proposed. Vehicle tests show the consistence with predictions for sound; also a back-pressure test bench confirms the advantage in pressure drop for both suggested mufflers. Those suggested mufflers also have advantages in manufacturing cost due to simplicity of the design.
A computational study is performed to better understand the choke phenomenon of unsteady gas flow through a critical nozzle. The axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method. In order to simulate the effects of back pressure fluctuations on the critical nozzle flow, a forced sinusoidal pressure wave is assumed downstream the exit of the critical nozzle. It's frequency is 20kHz and amplitude is varied below 15% of time-mean back pressure. The results obtained show that for low Reynolds numbers, the unsteady effects of the pressure fluctuations can propagate upstream of the throat of critical nozzle, and thereby giving rise to applicable fluctuations of mass flow through the critical nozzle. The effect of the amplitude of the excited pressure fluctuations on the choke phenomenon is discussed in details.

Precision forging technology that can control flow velocity of workpiece have been developed to minimize the amounts of machining. To get the uniform rib length, flow velocity distribution is needed to be estimated and controlled. Computer-aided design is known for very effective to estimate the deformation behavior and design the die for controlling the flow velocity. In this study, die design to control the deformation velocity are investigated using the DEFORM-2D about rib-web shape parts. Also we can get uniform rib length by enforcing the back pressure at end section of rib. The applied load of back pressure farming is lower than that of conventional forging. These results are analysed and confirmed by the experiment.
Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO) missions which require its engines to be operated at varying back pressure conditions, use engines operate at high combustion chamber pressures (more than 100bar) with moderate area ratios (AR 70~80). This ensures that the exhaust jet flows full during most part of the operational regimes by optimal expansion at each altitude. Aero-spike nozzle is a kind of altitude adaptation nozzle where requirement of high combustion chamber pressures can be avoided as the flow is adapted to the outside conditions by the virtue of the nozzle configuration. However, the thrust prediction using the conventional thrust equations remains to be a challenge as the nozzle plume shapes vary with the back pressure conditions. In the present work, the performance evaluation of a new aero-spike nozzle is being carried out. Computational studies are carried out to predict the thrust generated by the aero-spike nozzle in varying back pressure conditions which requires the unsteady pressure boundary conditions in the computational domain. Schlieren pictures are taken to validate the computational results. It is found that the flow in the aero-spike nozzle is mainly affected by the base wall pressure variation. The aerospike nozzle exhibits maximum performance in the properly expanded flow regime due to the open wake formation.

This paper addresses an analytical study on the gas-solid two phase flows in a nozzle. The primary purpose is to get recognition into the gas-solid suspension flows and to investigate the particle motion and its influence on the gas flow field. The present study is the primal step to comprehend the gas-solid suspension flow in the convergent-divergent nozzle. This paper try to made a development of an analytical model to study the back pressure ratio, particles loading and the particle diameter effect on gas-solid suspension flow. Mathematical model of gas-solid two phase flow was developed based on the single phase flow models to solve the quasi-one-dimensional mass, momentum equations to calculate the steady pressure field. The influence of particles loading and particle diameter is analyzed. The results obtained show that the suspension flow of smaller diameter particles has almost same trend as that of single phase flow using ideal gas as working fluid. And the presence of particles will weaken the strength of the shock wave; the bigger particle will have larger slip velocity with gas flow. The thrust coefficient is found to be higher for larger particles/gas loading or back pressure ratio, but it also depends on the ambient pressure.

An experimental study was performed for a cavitating venturi supplying a constant rate of flow independent of downstream pressure fluctuations when providing liquid propellant. The venturi was designed and manufactured in order to figure out the performance of the cavitating venturi. Effects of the rear-end shape, upstream pressure, and back pressure on the ratio of downstream to upstream pressure of the venturi as well as the flow-rate were observed. As a result, critical pressure ratio of the venturi, which generally depends only on the configuration of the venturi, was kept at 0.74 regardless of the rear-end shape and the upstream pressure of the venturi.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of the influence of the blade back sweep angle on the performance and flow characteristics in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser. Five impellers with different back sweep angles were tested in the flow simulations. It was found that a low back sweep angle could improve the total-to-total pressure ratio and the work coefficient over whole operating ranges. However, the flow field in an impeller with a low back sweep angle produced a more non-uniform velocity distribution at the impeller exit because the wake region was significantly increased. As a consequence, the impeller with a low back sweep angle caused a low diffuser performance.

Experimental and numerical studies were performed to investigate the performance and internal flow characteristics of a supersonic second throat exhaust diffuser (STED) with back pressure ($P_a$). An ejector system was used to vary the back pressure ($P_a$) conditions. The operating gas for the STED and the ejector was high pressure nitrogen at room temperature. When the back pressure ($P_a$) at a constant nozzle inlet pressure $P_0$) decreases, the pressure recovery location moves downstream. If the pressure ratio $P_0/P_a$) is the same, even if the nozzle inlet pressures $P_0$) are different, the diffuser's internal flow pattern and starting pressure ratio ($(P_0/P_a)_{st}$) are almost the same.
