  • Statement of the problem : IPS Empress ceramic has been used as one of a esthetic restorative material since it's development, but the broad application of IPS Empress ceramic to clinical prosthodontic field has been limited by its high material cost. Purpose : This study was investigated to evaluate the hardness and fracture toughness after recycling of the IPS Empress ceramic. Material and methods : Reused specimens of IPS Empress were fabricated with repeated pressing. The hardness(Vickers hardness) and fracture toughness of 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed specimens were measured with Digital Micro Hardness Tester(Model MXT70, Matsuzawa Seiki Co., Ltd, Tokyo, Japan). The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS(Ver 9.5). Result : The mean value of the hardness in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed Empress were $6.23{\pm}0.48MPa,\;5.50{\pm}0.25MPa$, and $5.70{\pm}0.42MPa$. The hardness of the 1st pressing ceramic was higher than those or the 2nd and 3rd pressed ceramics(P<0.05). Hardness of the 3rd pressed ceramic was greater than that of the 2nd pressed ceramic. but there was no significant difference of hardness between those two(P>0.05). The mean value of the fracture toughness was $1.71{\pm}0.16MPam^{1/2}$ in 1st pressed ceramic, $1.78{\pm}0.10MPam^{1/2}$ in 2nd pressed and $1.73{\pm}0.14MPam^{1/2}$ in 3rd pressed IPS ceramic. Fracture toughness of the 2nd pressed ceramic was the highest and that of the 1st pressed ceramic was the lowest. There was no significant difference of fracture toughness among them(P>0.05). Conclusion : Hardness of the 2nd and 3rd pressed IPS Empress ceramics were lesser than that of 1st pressed IPS Empress ceramic(P<0.05), but there was no significant changes of fracture toughness among them(P>0.05).

  • In hot pressed wood of Pseudotsuga menziesii compressed to 0 - 50 percent at temperature 60 - $180^{\circ}C$, relative humidity conditions affecting dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity and internal friction were investigated. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Moisture absorption of the hot pressed wood decreased with increasing press temperature, but there was no effect on the amount of compression. Thickness swelling dereased with increasing press temperature, and increased with increasing amount of compression. In general, dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity showed a straight line with increasing specific gravity of specimens. Dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity decreased with increasing moisture content, but internal friction increased with increasing amount of moisture content. Dynamic Young's modulus of R specimens pressed in the radial direction showed hight values than T specimens pressed in the tangential direction.

  • Densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties of hot-pressed specimens using $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-SiC powder with Al2O3 additive were studied. Beta-SiC powder was fully densified as 205$0^{\circ}C$, but $\alpha$-SiC powder was at 210$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder were 681 MPa and 6.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, and thosevalues of specimen hot-pressed using $\alpha$-SiC powder were 452 MPa and 4.7 MPa{{{{ SQRT {m } }}, respectively. The strength superiority of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder was due to the finer grain size, and higher density. The higher toughness of specimen hot-pressed using $\beta$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder than $\alpha$-SiC powder was due to the crack deflection mechanism arised from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $\alpha$ and $\beta$-SiC phases which were co-existed in the sintered body.

  • Statement of problem : IPS Empress2 system was developed and used in prosthodontic treatment, but the cost of ingot is expensive for wide application. Purpose : This study was to investigate the possibility on recycling of IPS Empress 2 ceramic for wide application of IPS Empress 2 ceramic in prosthodontic treatment. Material and Method : 1st, 2nd and 3rd pressed disc-shaped($10{\times}1.5mm$) IPS Empress 2 specimens were made with IPS Empress ingot(200, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) and pressing furnace(IPS Empress EP 500, Ivoclar, Liechtenstein). Vicker's surface hardness and fracture toughness, acid resistance, and pressing accuracy of IPS Empress 2 ceramic were measured and analyzed. Surface hardness was measured by microhardness tester(MTX 70. Matsuzawa, Japan), before and after surface treatment with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid and carbonic acid(Coca cola) for evaluation of acid resistance. Results : The surface hardness of 1st pressed specimen was the higher(5.11 GPa) than those of 2nd pressed(4.89 GPa) and 3rd pressed specimen(4.86 GPa), and the fracture toughness of 1st pressed ($1.58MPam^{1/2}$) and 2nd pressed specimen($1.51MPam^{1/2}$) were higher than that of 3rd pressed specimen($1.39MPam^{1/2}$). The changes of surface hardness of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pressed specimens after treatment with fluoric acid were 0.17, 0.06, 0.05 (GPa) respectively, and those of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pressed specimens after treatment with carbonic acid were 0.07, 0.00, 0.05(MPa) respectively. The pressing accuracy of 1st,2nd and 3rd specimen were 77.22%, 85.681%, and 75.05%. The pressing accuracy of 2nd pressed specimen was higher than that of the 3rd specimen. Conclusion : The changes of physical properties according to recycling of IPS Empress 2 from this study were insignificant. Therefore the possibility of recycling of IPS Empress 2 can be suggested from the results.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to compare the differences between decoctions extracted by different extraction method and extraction time. Methods : Decoctions were prepared with pressed or non-pressed extraction conditions for 60, 120 and 180min. The yields of extracts, sugar contents, hydrogen ion concentrations(pH), the contents of reference compounds in Yukmijihwang-tang(Liuweidihuang-tang) were investigated. Results : The yields and the dissolved solid content containing sugar content of decoctions were more in pressed extraction method than unpressed extraction method, and they tended to be increased as extraction time increased. The pH values of decoctions methods did not show significant differences between pressed and unpressed extraction methods or extraction times. Most of reference compounds showed higher contents in pressed extraction method than unpressed extraction method and their contents were augmented according to increase of extraction time. The content of paeonol was decreased when extracted in more than 120min with pressed extraction method and tended to be decreased as extraction time increased in unpressed extraction method. Conclusions : The pressed extraction with long extraction time could be useful for decoction of Yukmijihwang-tang(Liuweidihuang-tang). However, another ingredients possible to decrease in such condition need to be considered to determine suitable extraction condition.

  • Okinawan Awamori is produced by fermenting steamed indica rice with black mold, yeast, and water. Awamori-pressed lees is a by-product of the Awamori production process. Tofu lees is a by-product of the Tofu production process. This research consisted of two experiments conducted to elucidate whether or not dried Awamori-pressed lees and Tofu lees can be used as a mixed feed ingredient for raising female goats. In experiment 1, digestion trials were conducted to ascertain the nutritive values of dried Awamori-pressed lees and dried Tofu lees for goats. The digestible crude protein (DCP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) contents of dried Awamori-pressed lees and Tofu lees were 22.5%, 22.5% (DCP), and 87.2%, 94.4% (TDN) respectively. In experiment 2, 18 female goats (Japanese Saanen${\times}$Nubian, three months old, body weight $15.4{\pm}0.53$ kg) were divided into three groups of six animals (control feed group (CFG), Awamori-pressed lees mixed feed group (AMFG), Tofu lees mixed feed group (TMFG)). The CFG control used feed containing 20% soybean meal as the main protein source, while the AMFG and TMFG treatments used feed mixed with 20% dried Awamori-pressed lees or dried Tofu lees. The groups were fed mixed feed (volume to provide 100 g/d increase in body weight) twice a day (10:00, 16:00). The klein grass hay and water was given ad libitum. The hay intake was measured at 08:00 and 16:00. Body weight and size measurements were taken once a month. At the end of the experiment, a blood sample was drawn from the jugular vein of each animal. The DCP and TDN intakes in AMFG and TMFG showed no significant difference to the CFG. Cumulative measurements of growth in body weight, withers height, chest depth, chest girth, and hip width over the 10 mo period in the AMFG and TMFG were similar to the CFG. By contrast, cumulative growth in body length and hip height in the AMFG and TMFG tended to be larger than the CFG. Cumulative growth in chest width in the AMFG was significantly larger (p<0.05) than the CFG. Blood parameter values were similar to those in normal goats reported by other scientists. The coats of the AMFG and TMFG animals looked shinier than the animals in the CFG. The results demonstrate that dried Awamori-pressed lees and Tofu lees can be used as a feed ingredient for the raising female goats.

  • With the introduction of dental implants, restoration of missing teeth with conventional fixed or removable partial dentures is being replaced with implants. Especially, with young patients, not only longevity but also esthetic factors need to be considered. Implant restorations provide long-term success functionally but, esthetic complications such as, marginal exposure due to gingival recession, loss of the papilla and dark color of metal abutments may occur. Recently, zirconia restorations with CAD/CAM technology provide functional, biocompatible and esthetic restorations possible. All-ceramic restorations using the pressed ceramic technique show better fracture toughness values than those of the conventional porcelain veneering technique. Pressed ceramic technique creates the veneer design in wax and the lost wax technique is used to create the restoration. The final contour of the restoration may be controlled during wax-up. A 22-year old female patient was restored with dental implants and zirconia restorations using the pressed ceramic technique presenting short-term but optimistic prognosis.

  • The effect of composed phase in the hot pressed CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic has been investigated through microstructure studies, thermal, physical and mechanical properties. Sintering was done in the condition at the temperature range 900~95$0^{\circ}C$ for 20~120 mins under 7.5 MPa unilateral pressure. Sintered ceramics were composed of diopside, anorthite, residual glass and the portion of each phase was dependent on the sintering temperature and the holding time: as the temperature increases, the amount of diopside increased and then the rate of increase of diopside reduced with increasing anorthite. The thermal expansion coefficient of hot pressed was reduced with increasing crystallinity of hot pressed and was in the range of 6.69~7.46$\times$10-6 K-1 below $600^{\circ}C$. The elastic constant of hot pressed increased with increasing crystallinity up to about 80%, but after that was reduced due to the change of microstructure. The flexural strength of sintered ceramics was decreased with higher temperature and holding time, while the fracture toughness of those increased. It was shown that the physical and mechanical properties of hot pressed ceramic were related to the fraction of composed sintered ceramics, similar to a particulate composite, to the crystallinity of 80% of the glass-ceramic.

  • We investigated the characteristics of hot-pressed pure yttria ceramics, and annealed them in an oxidation atmosphere. Regardless of the heat treatment in the oxidation atmosphere, XRD analysis showed that all the samples had a $Y_2O_3$ phase without structural change. Even though the color variation of the hot-pressed $Y_2O_3$ ceramics was due to the sintering temperatures, the oxidation process turned the color of the $Y_2O_3$ ceramics into white. The color change during oxidation treatment appears to be related to oxygen defects. In addition, oxygen defects also affected the weight change and microstructure of the $Y_2O_3$ ceramics. The $Y_2O_3$ ceramic sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ had a $5.03g/cm^3$ density, which is close to the theoretical density of $Y_2O_3$. As the sintering temperature increased, small homogeneous grains grew to large grains which affected the Vickers hardness. $Y_2O_3$ ceramics hot-pressed at $1600^{\circ}C$ and annealed at $1200^{\circ}C$ had a flexural strength of 140MPa.

  • In this paper, we have studied the dependence of insertion loss of the pressed microstrip PBG ring consisting of coupled two microstrip lines. When the distance decreases, two or three attenuation poles are created by the coupling between the lines. Thus the pressed PBG ring exhibits a wide stop band and sharp cutoff characteristics.
