  • This study presents a simplifled calculation method for required ductility of coupling beams in precast coupled shear walls at preliminary seismic design stages. Deflection of precast coupled shear walls based on a continuum approach is combined with inelastic gap opening of horizontal connection of panels to provide a relationship between the system-level ductility and the element-level ductility in a precast coupled shear wall. The equation proposed herein for ductility requirement for coupling beams shows that higher stiffness and lower strength of coupling beams result in high ductility reuqirement. The equation also shows that the ductility requirement is proportional to the degree of gap opening of the story in question. However, the coupling beam ductility in higher stories are not affected by gap openings of horizontal connections of panel.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of classroom inquiry features exhibited on a web-based discussion board, which is called the Message Board. Approximately 4,000 students from 80 schools with 60 on-line scientists were participated in the study. During the study, a total of 639 messages in the selected cluster and several patterns were identified and analyzed. Three main features of the classroom inquiry were analyzed in terms of: 1) learner gives priority to evidence in responding to questions; 2) learner formulates explanations from evidence; 3) learner communicates and justifies explanations. The results are as follow. First, once learners identified and understood the questions posed by the curriculum, they needed to collect evidence or information in responding to the questions. Depending on the question that students were given, types of evidence/data students needed to collect and how to collect the data could vary. Second, students' formulated descriptions, explanations, and predictions after summarizing evidence were observed on the Message Board. However, the extent to which students summarized evidence for descriptions, explanations, and predictions varied. In addition, students were able to make a better use of evidence over time when they formulate descriptions and explanations. Third, the Message Board was designed to allow the great amount of learner self-direction. Classroom teachers and on-line scientists played an important role in providing guidance in developing inquiry. At the same time, development of content understanding also contributed to inquiry development.

  • While numbers of apartment housing are continually rising in the domestic housing construction industry, apartment contractors are currently developing plane models, upgrading facilities, and relevant technology, and investing much efforts to meet the higher demands of consumers. However, the construction process of apartment housing involves the intricate properties of the construction industry such as materials, workforce, equipment, weather, and unpredictable situations. If any of these factors becomes discordant and results in interference and interruption of the construction process, then defects, both functional and aesthetic, are likely to occur due to errors in the plan of industry organizers and constructors. Therefore, this research identifies the types of defects in an apartment construction project and analyzes their relative importance. Firstly, this research reviews the previous research trends and will reduce the needs of this research. Afterward, defect repair costs corresponding to the different defect types are calculated by applying results of the research and performing frequency analysis on defect types included in 'Tenant preliminary research' on apartments constructed by Company A. As a result of analyzing the importance of defect type, the top six activities, including tile, floor, paper hanging, PL window, cabinetry, and kitchen cabinet, are found to be of high importance, and the top six activities in question need of repair and management of defects first. The results of this study will help establish a plan to initially respond to such problems as refusal to move in and filing a defect suit against delay in repairing defects.
