  • The aviation gas turbine is composed of many expensive and highly precise parts and operated in high pressure and temperature gas. When breakdown or performance deterioration occurs due to the hostile environment and component degradation, it severely influences the aircraft operation. Recently to minimize this problem the third generation of predictive maintenance known as condition based maintenance has been developed. This method not only monitors the engine condition and diagnoses the engine faults but also gives proper maintenance advice. Therefore it can maximize the availability and minimize the maintenance cost. The advanced gas turbine health monitoring method is classified into model based diagnosis (such as observers, parity equations, parameter estimation and Gas Path Analysis (GPA)) and soft computing diagnosis (such as expert system, fuzzy logic, Neural Networks (NNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GA)). The overview shows an introduction, advantages, and disadvantages of each advanced engine health monitoring method. In addition, some practical gas turbine health monitoring application examples using the GPA methods and the artificial intelligent methods including fuzzy logic, NNs and GA developed by the author are presented.

  • The predictive utility of a damage model depends heavily on its particular choice of a damage variable, which serves as a macroscopic approximation in describing the underlying micromechanical processes of microdefects. In the case of spatially perfectly randomly distributed microcracks or microvoids in all directions, isotropic damage model is an appropriate choice, and scalar damage variables were widely used for isotropic or one-dimensional phenomenological damage models. The simplicity of a scalar damage representation is indeed very attractive. However, a scalar damage model is of somewhat limited use in practice. In order to entirely characterize the isotropic damage behaviors of damaged materials in multidimensional space, a system theory of isotropic double scalar damage variables, including the expressions of specific damage energy release rate, the coupled constitutive equations corresponding to damage, the conditions of admissibility for two scalar damage effective tensors within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, was provided and analyzed in this study. Compared with the former studies, the theoretical formulations of double scalar damage variables in this study are given in the form of matrix, which has many features such as simpleness, directness, convenience and programmable characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the above-mentioned theoretical formulations are only logically reasonable. Owing to the limitations of time, conditions, funds, etc. they should be subject to multifaceted experiments before their innovative significance can be fully verified. The current level of research can be regarded as an exploratory attempt in this field.

  • In this study, we derived a new non-dimensional variable including bubble size and air diffusing area by Buckingham's theorem for making a practical correlation with experimental results. Firstly, we drew a relationship between a non-dimensional variable, $NH/u_s$, which has a form of Froude number and destratification efficiency with a simple theoretical consideration. Then we derived two non-dimensional variables by Buckingham's ${\pi}$-theorem and equating them with a form of $Fr_N$ for making single parameter to correlate overall destratification efficiency. As the result, the single parameter Be number shows a correlations with destratification efficiencies obtained from laboratory and pilot experiments. Also, for the practical applications, we conducted multiple regression analysis using Be and tank area to make predictive equations about destratification efficiency. The result also shows a successful correlations with destratification efficiency ($R^2$>0.9, p<0.001). Using this equation, we proposed a new design methodology with respect to bubble diffusing area.

  • The investigation of the fragmentation of blasted rocks is particularly important because it is a measure of the blast efficiency. The degree of fragmentation has a major effect on the efficiency of the loading and crushing operations. Getting such an information on the large pile of blasted rock is not an easy operation. This paper presents the results of case study to evaluate the performance of two types of tunnel blasting: V-cut and burn cut. The digital images of muckpiles were analyzed to produce size distribution and it was compared with those of predictive equations.

  • Flexibly-reconfigurable roll forming (FRRF) is a novel sheet metal forming technology conducive to producing multi-curvature surfaces by controlling the strain distribution along longitudinal direction. In FRRF, a sheet metal is shaped into the desired curvature by using reconfigurable rollers and gaps between the rollers. As FRRF technology and equipment are under development, a simulation model corresponding to the physical FRRF would aid in investigating how the shape of a sheet varies with input parameters. To facilitate the investigation, the current study exploits regression analysis to construct a predictive model for the longitudinal curvature of the sheet. Variables considered as input parameters are sheet compression ratio, radius of curvature in the transverse direction, and initial blank width. Samples were generated by a three-level, three-factor full factorial design, and both convex and saddle curvatures are represented by a quadratic regression model with two-factor interactions. The fitted quadratic equations were verified numerically with R-squared values and root mean square errors.

  • This work deals with 24 substances composed of nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The relationships between the chromatographic retention factor (k) and those physicochemical properties which are relevant in quantitative structure-properties relationship (QSPR) studies, such as the polarizability $(\alpha)$, molar refractivity (MR), lipophilicity (logP), dipole moment $(\mu)$, total energy $(E_{tot})$, heat of formation $(\Delta H_f)$, molecular surface area $(S_M)$, and binding energy $(E_b)$, were investigated. The accuracy of the simple linear regressions between the chromatographic retention and the descriptors for all of the compounds was satisfactory (correlation coefficient, $0.8 \leq r \leq 1.0$). The QSPR models of these nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds could be predicted with a multiple linear regression equation having the statistical index, r = 1.000. This work demonstrated the successful application of the multiple linear approaches through the development of accurate predictive equations for retention factors in liquid chromatography.

  • An accurate knowledge of the flash point is important in developing appropriate preventive and control measures in industrial fire protection. The lower flash points for the 2-propanol+acetic acid and 2-propanol+-n-propionic acid systems were measured by Cleveland open cup apparatus. The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, the Wilson equation and the NRTL(non random two liquids) equation. The calculated values based on the Wilson and NRTL equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. And the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model, based on NRTL equation described the experimentally-derived data were more effective than the case of the Wilson equation.

  • Computational modeling and simulation can provide an effective predictive capability for the major features of the supersonic microjets. In the present study, computations using the axisymmetic, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are applied to understand the supersonic microjet flow physics. The pressure ratio of the microjets is changed between 0.2 and 1.25 to obtain both the under- and over-expanded flows at the exit of the micronozzle. and Reynolds number Re is changed between 600 to 40000. For both laminar and turbulent microjet flows, sonic and supersonic microjets are simulated and compared with some experimental results available. Based on computational results, two microjets are discussed in terms of total pressure, jet decay and supersonic core length.

  • The objectives of this study were to determine whether older Americans would provide valid energy intake information using a 24-hr recall method and to determine which characteristics were predictive of under-report of energy intake. We conducted 24-hour recalls on 83 male and 105 female community-dwelling older adults(66-87y) in the USA to assess energy(EI) and nutrient intakes. Basal metabolic rate(BMR) was calculated from age-and gender-specific equations of Schofield. Under-reporting was defined a priori as EI : BMR<0.9. Subjects volunteered demographic information, underwent depression and cognition exams, and completed a Level II Nutrition Risk Screen. Differences between under- and adequate-reporters were assessed using t-tests for characteristics and macro-nutrient profile. Stepwise regression analyses were used to predict under-reporting status. Under-reporting of EI occurred in 34% of the sample. Neither geriatric depression scale(GDS) score, nor self-reported weight loss were related to under-reporting. On average, under-reporters had higher body mass indices. The most significant variables for the main effect to predict the ratio of energy intake to estimated basal metabolic rate(EI : BMRest) were BMI and age. Using a standard cut-off of 76% of the recommended dietary allowances for Americans, under-reporters were consistently more likely to be classified as having inadequate nutrient, as well as energy, intakes. • Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams subjected to predominant shear are accomplished to determine their diagonal shear strength including ultimate shear strength. The par¬ameters varied were the fiber volume fraction(Vf) of the steel-fibers and shear span to depth ratio(a/d). The test result show that diagonal shear strength and ultimate shear strength are increased significantly due to crack arrest mechamsm. Predictive equations are suggested for evaluating the diagonal cracking strength and ultimate shear strength of the fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams.
