  • This paper presents a numerical method for implementing a nonlinear constitutive material model developed by Lade, into a finite element computer program. The techniques used are based on the displacement method for the solution of axial symmetric and plane strain nonlinear boundary value problems. Laboratory behaviour of Baekma river sand(#40-60) is used to illustrate the determination of the parameters and verification of the model. Computer procedure is developed to determine the material parameters for the nonlinear model from the raw laboratory test data. The model is verified by comparing its predictions with observed data used for the determination of the parameters and then with observed data not used for the determination. Three categories of tests are carried out in the back-prediction exercise; (1) A hydrostatic test including loading and unloading response, (2) Conventional triaxial drained compression tests at three different confining pressure and (3) A model strip footing test not including in the evaluation of material parameters. Pertinent observations are discussed based on the comparison of predicted response and experimental data.

  • In this paper, finite element analysis is applied for simulation of cracks due to restraining autogenous and drying shrinkage at early-age concrete. A micro-level heat hydration model and a shrinkage prediction model along with a moisture diffusion model are adopted for the finite element analysis. Then, an axial restraint test is carried out for concrete specimens containing different amounts of chloride ions to evaluate stress development and cracking due to the restraining shrinkages at early ages. Test results show that the increase of contents of chloride ions increases restrained stress, but does not increase strength. By this increase of shrinkage strain at early-age, time to occur the crack is accelerated. Finally, stress development and cracking of concrete specimens containing different amount of chloride ions we simulated using the finite element analysis. Results of the analysis using the Proposed model are verified by comparison with test results.

  • Generally, conventional transport infrastructures consist of compacted granular materials. Their stiffness and response greatly depend on the particle sizes and distributions, and application of loading on the surface over a foundation may induce deformation in both the surface and the underlying foundations. Therefore, a better understanding of the deformation characteristics on granular materials and the prediction are needed. For this reason, an attempt to evaluate and predict deformation of coarse materials based on the discrete element method is presented in this paper. An algorithm for particle distribution curve analysis was formulated and incorporated into the discrete element program. The results show that the discrete element model with particle distribution curve is suitable for estimating stress deformation in a pre-peak response. Unlike conventional uniform or random particle distribution, the response can be obtained by the use of the proper model and approach.

  • Because the flat dilatometer (DMT) is operated in appropriate strain level, it has been known as an adoptable in-situ tool to evaluate the compressibility of soils compare with other in-situ test tools, such as SPT and CPT. This study is concerned about prediction method of constrained modulus by DMT, and a series of DMT and consolidation tests are performed at Busan new-port, Yangsan and Noksan test sites. By comparing DMT results with lab tests, the suitability of constrained modulus correlation, which is suggested by Marchetti, is investigated in Busan clay and new correlation is suggested. In lab test result, the compression indices ($C_c$) of Busan clay are turned out to be 0.4~0.12, and the constrained moduli are found out 0.5MPa~3MPa and these are increase with depth. The predicted constrained moduli using Marchetti's correlation are turned out 0.5MPa~4MPa, and these are bigger than measured constrained moduli by lab tests. By analyzing lab test and DMT results, it is shown that the correlation coefficient ($R_M=M/E_D$) has a linear relationship with (1/$I_D$) in Busan.

  • A hybrid precast concrete beam system with a simple rigid connection was proposed to compensate the limitations and shortcomings of the conventional bolt connection associated with the H-beams embedded into concrete beams. Three beam specimens with fixed both ends were tested under one-point top cyclic loading to explore the effectiveness of the developed hybrid beam system in transferring externally applied flexure to a column. The main parameter considered was the length ($L_s$) of H-beam, which was selected to be $0.25L_I$, $0.5L_I$, and $1.0L_I$, where $L_I$ is the distance from the support to the point of inflection. All beam specimens showed a better displacement ductility ratio than the reinforced concrete beams with the same longitudinal reinforcement index, indicating that the cyclic load-deflection curve and ductility were insignificantly affected by $L_s$. The continuous strain distribution along the beam length and the prediction of the ultimate load based on the collapse mechanism ascertained the structural adequacy of the developed rigid connection.

  • This paper presents development of the nine-node co-rotational(CR) planar element applicable for elastoplastic and contact analysis. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations. It is based on the assumptions of small strain and large displacement. Further, it is extended to both elastoplastic analysis and contact analysis in this paper. For accurate plastic analysis, nine-node quadrilateral element, which can provide accurate stress prediction, is chosen. Bi-linear hardening rule based on Newton- Raphson return-mapping is employed. Also, Lagrange multiplier is used in order for constraints regarding the contact analysis. The present development is validated via the time transient problems. The present results are compared with those obtained by the other existing software.

  • This paper proposes a method to predict the ductility capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the formations of plastic hinges at both ends of the adjacent beams. The current design code divides joints into two categories: Type 1 for structures in non seismically hazard area and Type 2 in seismically hazard area. While there are many researches related to joint shear strength in Type 1, those in regard to joint ductility capacity of Type 2 are scarce. This paper classified the ductility capacity of beam-column joints into column, joint panel, and beam deformability. Since a brittle failure such as shear or bond failure in the columns must be avoided, column deformability was calculated by elastic analysis. The plastic hinges of the adjacent beams affect joint deformability. Therefore, the prediction of joint deformability was calculated with consideration to the degradation of the diagonally compressed concrete due to the strain penetration.

  • In this study, the plane stress fracture toughness and Tearing modulus are investigated for various crack ratios using the J integral. To evaluate the J integral and Tearing modulus, both experiments and estimation are used. The thickness of the low carbon steel specimens that is used in the experiments is 3mm. The type of specimen that is considered in the study is center-cracked-tension one. The measurements of crack length are performed by unloading compliance method. In the estimation of crack parameters such as the J integral and load line displacement, the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law is assumed. Then simple formulas are given for estimating the crack parameters from contained yielding to fully plastic solutions. Obtained results are as follows; (1) When the crack ratio is in the range of 0.500 - 0.701, the plane stress fracture toughness is almost constant regardless of crack ratios. (2) The fracture toughness (J$\_$c/) and Tearing modulus (T) obtained are J$\_$c/=28.51kgf/mm, T=677.7 for base metal, J$\_$c/=31.85kgf/mm, T=742.0 for annealed metal. (3) Simpson's and McCabe's formulas which consider crack growth in estimating J integral are shown more conservative J and lower T than Rice's and Sumpter's. (4) Comparison of the prediction with the actual experimental measurements by Simpson's formula shows good agreement.

  • In this study, the applicability of underground displacement sensors was considered through rock blasting tests to develop a relatively inexpensive and efficient slope failure prediction system that can quickly detect the risk of slope failure in advance and issue predictions and warnings with accurate judgment. In the blasting experiment, the sensor located close to the blasting source showed a large displacement due to crushing inside the rock and the sensor located away from the blasting source showed a relatively small strain. This study confirmed that the wired and wireless type underground displacement sensor system can be applied to measure the behavior of the rock slope, and it can be used as a basic data for establishing an early warning system to predict slope failure.

  • Effect of radiation models on the suppression limits in counterflow $CH_4$/air diffusion flame was numerically investigated with fundamental experiments for the numerical validation. $N_2$ and $CO_2$ were considered as extinguishing agents. The differences in extinguishing concentration between OTM and SNB radiation models which have different accuracy levels were examined. As a result, there is no considerable difference in extinguishing concentration for the $N_2$ dilution as the radiation models with different accuracy levels were used. As the $CO_2$ having strong radiative effect was diluted in the low strain flames, however, the radiation model with high predictive accuracy such as SNB should be used. In particular, the $CO_2$ dilution in fuel stream leads to the significant difference in extinguishing concentration between OTM and SNB models. Therefore, it is necessary that the radiation model should be reasonably chosen with the consideration of numerical accuracy and computational time for the prediction of extinguishing concentration.
