Handoff is one of the most important features for the user's mobility in a wireless cellular communication system. It is related to resource reservation at nearby cells. Resource reservation to the new connection point should occur prior to handoff to enable the user to receive the data or services at the new location, at the same level of service as at the previous location. For the efficient resource reservation, mobility prediction has been reported as an effective means to decrease the call dropping probability and to shorten the handoff latency in a wireless cellular environment. A recently proposed algorithm, ZMHB, makes use of the history of the user's positions within the current cell to predict the next cell. But, the prediction of the ZMHB algorithm is found to be 80∼85% accurate for regular and random movements. In this paper, we propose a new improved ZMHB mobility prediction algorithm, which is called Detailed-ZMHB that uses detailed-zone-based tracking of mo-bile users to predict user movements. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is then demonstrated through a simulation.
This paper proposes a handoff time decision mechanism to utilize resource efficiently by using Differential Received Signal Strength Indicator (DRSSI). DRSSI can be used to predict the movement direction of Mobile Station (MS). In other words, DRSSI changes its sign (+ or -) when a MS changes movement direction. This mechanism maximizes resource availability of Base Station (BS) by predicting resource reservation of MS and by giving priority of resource to MS. It is possible when a BS predicts the behavior of MSs by monitoring the DRSSI of MSs in overlapped region among cells. Additionally, we show that our proposed mechanism has better handoff blocking probability than existing mechanism with numerical modeling and analysis.
The mobility prediction algorithm and the channel reservation scheme have been reported as an effective means to provide QoS guarantees and the efficient resource reservation in wireless networks. Among these prediction algorithms, the recently proposed Detailed-ZMHB algorithm makes use of the history of the user's positions within the current cell to predict the next cell, which provides the better prediction accuracy than the others. The handoff prioritizing schemes are proposed to provide improved performance at the expense of an increase in the blocking probability of new calls. In the soft handoff of the CDMA systems, a mobile can communicate via two adjacent cells simultaneously for a while before the actual handoff takes place. In this paper, we propose a new channel reservation scheme making use of the user mobility pattern information in order to reduce the call dropping probability. Our results show that the proposed scheme gives about 67.5-71.1$\%$ lower call dropping probability, compared to the existing scheme.
In wireless communication networks, most of the prediction techniques are used for predicting the amount of resource required by user's calls for improving their demanding quality of service. However, we propose a channel allocation scheme based on predicting the resources of white spectrum holes for improving the QoS of rental user's spectrum handoff calls for cognitive radio networks in this paper. This method is supported by Wiener predictor to predict the amount of white spectrum holes of license user's free spectrum resources. We classify rental user's calls into initial calls and spectrum handoff calls, and some portion of predicted spectrum-hole resources is reserved for spectrum handoff calls' priority allocation. Simulations show that the performance of the proposed scheme outperforms in spectrum handoff call's dropping rate than an existing method without spectrum hole prediction(11% average improvement in 50% reservation).
Handoff if the most Important feature for the user's mobility in a cellular communication system, which is related to resource reservation at nearby cells. For efficient resource reservation, mobility prediction has been reported as an effective means to decrease call dropping probability and to shorten handoff latency in wireless cellular environments. Several early proposed handoff schemes making use of tile user's movement history on a cell-by-cell basis work on the assumption that the user's movements are restricted to the indoor locations such as an office or a building. However, those algorithms cannot be applied to a micro-cell structure or a metropolis with complicated structure of roads. In this paper, to overcome those drawbacks we propose a new mobility prediction algorithm, which stores and uses the history of the user's positions within the current cell to predict the next cell.

Recently, users want to use real-time multimedia services, such as internet, VoIP, etc., using their IEEE 802.11 wireless lan mobile stations. In order to provide such services, a handoff among access points is essential to support the mobility of a node, in such an wide area. However, the legacy handoff methods of IEEE 802.11 technology are easy to lose connections. Also, the recognition of a disconnection and channel re-searching time make the major delay of the next AP to connect. In addition, because IEEE 802.11 decides the selection of an AP depending only on received signal strength, regardless of a node direction, position, etc., it cannot guarantee a stable bandwidth for communication. Therefore, in order to provide a real-time multimedia service, a node must reduce the disconnection time and needs an appropriate algorithm to support a sufficient communication bandwidth. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm which predicts a handoff point of a moving node by using GPS location information, and guarantees a high transmission bandwidth according to the signal strength and the distance. We implemented the suggested algorithm, and confirmed the superiority of our algorithm by reducing around 3.7ms of the layer-2 disconnection time, and guaranteed 24.8% of the communication bandwidth.

For very large multimedia traffic to be supported successfully in wireless network environment, it is necessary to provide Quality-of-Service(QoS) guarantees between mobile hosts(clients). In order to guarantee the Qos, we have to keep the call blocking probability below target value during handoff session. However, the QoS negotiated between the client and the network may not be guaranteed due to lack of available channels for traffic in the new cell, since mobile clients should be able to continue their on-going sessions. In this paper we propose a efficient load-balancing algorithm based on the adaptive bandwidth reservation scheme for enlarging available channels in a cell. We design a new method to predict the mobility of clients using MPT(mobility profile table). This method is then used to reserve a part of bandwidths for handoff calls to its adjacent cells and this reserved bandwidth can be used for handoff call prior to new connection requests. If the number of free channels is also under a low threshold value, our scheme use a load-balancing algorithm with a adaptive bandwidth reservation. In order to evaluate the performance of our algorithm, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of new calls and dropping probability of handoff calls, and compare with other existing schemes.
To effectively use limited resources in wireless cellular networks it is necessary to predict exactly the amount of resources required by handoff calls at a future time. In this paper we propose a method which predicts the amount of resources needed by handoff calls more accurately than the existing method based on Wiener processes. The existing method uses the current demands to predict future demands. Although this method is much simpler than using traffic information from neighbor cells, its prediction error increases as time elapses, leading to waste of wireless resources. By using an exponential parameter to decrease the magnitude of error over time, we show in simulation how to outperform the existing method in resource utilization as well as in prediction of resource demands.
In this paper, we present a received signal strength (RSS) prediction model to timely Initiate link layer triggers for fast handoff in a wireless LAN system. Noting that the distance between a mobile terminal and an access point is not changed abruptly in a short time interval, an adaptive RSS predictor based on a stationary time series model is proposed. RSS data obtained from ns-2 simulations are used to identity the time series model and verify the predictability of the RSS data. The results suggest that an autoregressive process of order 1 (AR(1)) can be used to represent the measured RSSs in a short time interval and predict at least 1-step ahead RSS with a high confidence level.
This paper presents a channel reservation scheme using Wiener prediction model in order to reduce the rate of forced termination of cognitive users in cognitive radio networks. The proposed method uses Wiener prediction model to predict the number of radio channel required by the reappearance of primary users, and then calculates and reserves the number of channels that cognitive users demand for their spectrum handoff. Through the simulation we investigate cognitive users' forced termination rate and blocking rate with and without channel reservation. In addition we show the bandwidth utilization efficiency for both cases. The results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the forced termination rate of cognitive users at the cost of slightly increasing in blocking rate. Also it is seen that there is little difference in bandwidth utilization efficiency for both cases.
