Hydrological data is very important in understanding the hydrological process and identifying its characteristics to protect human life and property from natural disasters. In particular, hydrological analysis are often performed assuming that hydrological data are stationary. However, recently climate change has raised the issue of climate stationary, and it is necessary to analyze the nonstationary of the climate. In this study, a method to analyze the stationarity of hydrological data was examined using the annual precipitation of 37 meteorological stations with long - term record data. Therefore, in this study, the stationary was determined by analyzing the persistence, trend, and stability using annual precipitation. Overall results showed that a trend was observed in 4 out of 37 stations, stable was investigated at 15 stations, and persistence was shown at 4 stations. In the stationary analysis using the annual precipitation data, 25 stations (67% of 37 stations) were nonstationary.

The direct-runoff of South Korea's representative dams (Soyanggang, Chungju, Andong, Daecheong, and Seomjingang) and precipitation were analyzed mainly with the evenly distributed spring rainfall events across the country for the last five years. For precipitation, an increasing was presented during the period 2008-2011, but did not continue to increasing 2012. The average precipitation of the five dams displayed a similar trend. Except for Chungju and Andong Dams, the trend of runoff was similar to the one shown in the precipitation. Despite the precipitation of 2009 increased, the runoff volume decreased for Andong and Chungju Dams. In addition, Chungju Dam remarkably showed a bigger runoff volume compared to other dams. As for the Sumjingang Dam, the runoff volume was the smallest, and the difference is as great as over 15-fold when compared to other runoff values. After the result of analyzing the relation between a single runoff event and synoptic weather patterns, pattern 4 contributed to the greatest impact on this event and weather patterns. The total runoff volume of the five dams for spring rain event for the last five years that exhibited this characteristic was estimated at 5.68 billion tons($10^6m^3$). Lastly, the value of this estimation was assessed as approximately 273.1 billion KRW.
Internationally many models are developed and applied to predict the impact of the climate change, as occurring a lot of symptoms by climate change. Also, in Korea, according to increasing the application of the climate effect model in many research fields, it is required to study the method for preparing climate data and the characteristics of the climate. In this study IDSW (Inverse Distance Squared Weighting), one of the spatial statistic methods, is applied to interpolate. This method estimates a point of interest by assigning more weight to closer points, which are limited to be select by 3 in 100 km radius. As a result, annual average temperature and precipitation had increased by $0.4^{\circ}C$ and 412 mm during 1977 to 2006. They are also predicted to increase by $3.96^{\circ}C$, 319 mm in the 2100 compared to 2007. High variability of temperature and precipitation for last 30 years shows in some part of the Gangwon-do and in the southern part of Korea. Besides in the study of the variable trend, the variability of temperature and precipitation is inclined to increase in Gangwon-do and southern east part, respectively. However, during 2071 to 2100 variability of temperature is predicted to be high in midwest of Korea and variability of precipitation in the east. In the trend of variability, variability of temperature is apt to increase into west south, and variability of precipitation increase in midwest and a part of south.

A topography-precipitation relationship derived from the southern part of Korean Peninsula was applied to North Korea where climate stations are few and widely separated. Two hundred and seventy seven rain gauge stations of South Korea were classified into 8 different groups depending on the slope orientation (aspect) of the region they are located. Monthly precipitation averaged over 10 year period (1986-1995) was regressed to topographical variables of the station locations. A 'trend precipitation' for each gauge station was extracted from the precipitation surface interpolated from the monthly precipitation data of 24 standard stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration and used as a substitute for y-axis intercept of the regression equation. These regression models were applied to the corresponding regions of North Korea, which were identified by slope orientation, to obtain monthly precipitation surface for the aspect regions. 'Trend precipitation' from the 10 year data of 27 North Korean standard stations was also used in the model calculation. Output grids for each aspect region were mosaicked to form the monthly and annual precipitation surface with a 1km$\times$1km resolution for the entire territory of North Korea. Spatially averaged annual precipitation of North Korea was 938 mm with the standard deviation of 246 mm.

Flooding has become an increasing event which is one of the major natural disasters responsible for direct economic damage in South Korea. Driven by climate change, precipitation extremes play significant role on the flood damage and its further increase is expected to exacerbate the socioeconomic impact in the country. However, the empirical evidence associating changes in precipitation extremes to the historical flood damage is limited. Thus, there is a need to assess the causal relationship between changes in precipitation extremes and flood damage, especially in agricultural region like Chungcheong region in South Korea. The spatial and temporal changes of precipitation extremes from 10 synoptic stations based on daily precipitation data were analyzed using the ClimPACT2 tool and Mann-Kendall test. The four precipitation extreme indices consisting of consecutive wet days (CWD), number of very heavy precipitation wet days (R30 mm), maximum 1-day precipitation amount (Rx1day), and simple daily precipitation intensity (SDII), which represent changes in intensity, frequency, and duration, respectively, and the time series data on flooded area and flood damage from 1985 to 2020 were used to investigate the causal relationship in the ARDL-ECM framework and pairwise Granger causality analysis. The trend results showed that majority of the precipitation indices indicated positive trends, however, CWD showed no significant changes. ARDL-ECM framework showed that there was a long-run relationship among the variables. Further analysis on the empirical results showed that flooded area and Rx1day have significant positive impacts on the flood damage in both short and long-runs while R30 mm only indicated significant positive impact in the short-run, both in the current period, which implies that an increase in flooded area, Rx1day, and R30 mm will cause an increase in the flood damage. The pairwise Granger analysis showed unidirectional causality from the flooded area, R30 mm, Rx1day, and SDII to flood damage. Thus, these precipitation indices could be useful as indicators of pluvial flood damage in Chungcheong region of South Korea.
In this study, to understand the May aridity condition of each region for the year of the worst drought on record in each duration (1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, 24 months), monthly climate data recorded from 1973 to 2006 at 53 climatological stations in South Korea were used to estimate the FAO Penman-Monteith reference potential evapotranspiration (RET). Monthly precipitation and RET were used to estimate P/RET as aridity index and variation index (VI) of P/RET, and these indexes are compared with SPI (Standard Precipitation Index). Fifty three climatological stations were grouped into 20 regions, so that May aridity conditions of 20 regions were studied. Furthermore, regional trend of May aridity index was studied by applying Mann-Kendall trend analysis, Spearman rank test, and Sen's slope estimator. The study results show that variation index (VI) of P/RET and SPI have close correlation. Throughout the country, as the duration is shorter, May aridity was more severe. In case of 3-month and 6-month duration, most of region show significant or non-significant decreasing trend of aridity index. However, no region show significant decreasing trend of aridity index in case of 12-month and 24-month duration.

This study was conducted to provide the agricultural climatological basic data for the reset of sowing period of the winter crop on the double cropping system with rice. During the past 30 years from 1981 to 2010, mean air temperature has risen by $0.45^{\circ}C$ per 10 years (with statistical significance), while precipitation has decreased by 6.74 mm per 10 years and the numbers of days for precipitation has reduced by 0.23 days per 10 years (with no statistical significance) in the sowing period ($1^{st}$ Oct. to $5^{th}$ Nov.) of winter crop. It was analyzed that double cropping system of rice and winter crops need to be reset in the way of delaying the sowing time of winter crops, because rising trend of temperature was clear while variability of precipitation was great and the trend was not clear in the sowing period of winter crops. We have also analyzed the meteorological features of the sowing period of winter crops in 2014, and found that mean air temperature in 2014 was higher than that in normal years (similar to recent temperature change feature) while precipitation in 2014 was much more frequent than that in normal years (unlike recent precipitation features). Such tendency in 2014 made the sowing of winter crops difficult because mechanical sowing could not be worked in flooded paddy fields. Heavy rain in October 2014 was also analyzed as a rare phenomenon.
The spatial distribution of precipitation trends according to urbanization, geographical and topographical conditions have been studied. In this study, precipitation data from 1973 to 2006 were analyzed for 56 climatological stations including the Seoul metropolis in South Korea. In addition to annual average daily precipitation, monthly average daily precipitation in April, July, October and January were analyzed, considering seasonal effect. The geographical and topographical characteristics of these sites were examined using GIS analysis. Land use status of the study area was also examined to estimate the extent of urbanization. The study results indicate that annual average precipitation increased, and monthly average precipitation in April and October decreased, while those in January and July increased. Considering urbanization effect, annual average precipitation and monthly average precipitation in July increased; however, monthly average precipitation in January, April and October decreased. Furthermore, compared with urbanization rate and proximity to coast, average elevation of study area appeared to be the most close correlation with annual and monthly averages of precipitation trends.
The climatological characteristics of the area averaged monthly precipitation over the Han- and Nakdong-river basins were investigated. The data used for this study is monthly precipitation data from 51 meteorological stations for the period of 1954 to 2002. The magnitude of area averaged precipitation in the Han-river basin was about 10% larger than that in the Nakdong-river basin. However, the variability of two monthly precipitation time series exhibited similar characteristics: April precipitation tends to decrease and August precipitation increase significantly, while there was no significant trend for the other months. There were some indications of abrupt change around the 1970's in the periodicity of precipitation and relationship with El Nino index. September precipitation showed negative correlation with NINO3 index but November precipitation, positive correlation with NINO3 index, indicating a possible connection with the global-scale phenomena.

Precipitation time series is a mixture of complicate fluctuation and changes. The monthly precipitation data of 61 stations during 36 years (1973-2008) in Korea are comprehensively analyzed using the EOFs technique and CSEOFs technique respectively. The main motivation for employing this technique in the present study is to investigate the physical processes associated with the evolution of the precipitation from observation data. The twenty-five leading EOF modes account for 98.05% of the total monthly variance, and the first two modes account for 83.68% of total variation. The first mode exhibits traditional spatial pattern with annual cycle of corresponding PC time series and second mode shows strong North South gradient. In CSEOF analysis, the twenty-five leading CSEOF modes account for 98.58% of the total monthly variance, and the first two modes account for 78.69% of total variation, these first two patterns' spatial distribution show monthly spatial variation. The corresponding mode's PC time series reveals the annual cycle on a monthly time scale and long-term fluctuation and first mode's PC time series shows increasing linear trend which represents that spatial and temporal variability of first mode pattern has strengthened. Compared with the EOFs analysis, the CSEOFs analysis preferably exhibits the spatial distribution and temporal evolution characteristics and variability of Korean historical precipitation.
