Construction of high-rise precast concrete apartment is an atractive alternative solution for severe shortage of residential facilities, especially in metropolitan areas in Korea. New building regulations enforced since 1988 requires all buildings higher than 6 storeys to be designed for earthquake. However, we hardly have any experience on seismic design of precast concrete buildings. This paper deals with methodology of seismic design and design considerations of connections for the large panel structures. Also addressed in this paper are studies needed to develop proper seismic design procedures of precast concrete buildings.

The seismic performance of precast concrete panel structures tested previously has been evaluated in this paper. Hysteretic curves of test specimens are idealized to elasto-plastic curves to get reliable yielding and ultimate displacements. For the idealized curves, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of specimens have been evaluated using a few guide lines. In addition, the strength capacity of specimens is checked for the strength demand caused by the design earthquake load including overturning moment effects. The result shows while the strength of specimen with joint box for vertical continuity is little bit lower than that of specimen connected by welding, the ductility of the former is higher than that of the latter. The energy dissipation ratios of PC specimens are ranged from 83% to 96% of that of Re specimen and the average of those are shown 90%.

Final construction project cost is significantly determined by construction rate. The Industrialized Building System (IBS) was promoted to enhance the importance of prefabrication technology rather than conventional methods in construction. Ensuring the stability of a building constructed by using IBS is a challenging issue. Accordingly, the connections in a prefabricated building have a basic, natural, and essential role in providing the best continuity among the members of the building. Deficiencies of conventional precast connections were observed when precast buildings experience a large induced load, such as earthquakes and other disasters. Thus, researchers aim to determine the behavior of precast concrete structure with a specific type of connection. To clarify this problem, this study investigates the capacity behavior of precast concrete panel connections for industrial buildings with a new type of precast wall-to-wall connection (i.e., U-shaped steel channel connection). This capacity behavior is compared with the capacity behavior of precast concrete panel connections for industrial buildings that used a common approach (i.e., loop connection), which is subjected to monotonic loading as in-plane and out-of-plane loading by developing a finite element model. The principal stress distribution, deformation of concrete panels and welded wire mesh (BRC) reinforcements, plastic strain trend in the concrete panels and connections, and crack propagations are investigated for the aforementioned connection. Pushover analysis revealed that loop connections have significant defects in terms of strength for in-plane and out-of-plane loads at three translational degrees of freedom compared with the U-shaped steel channel connection.

A concrete core is used widely as lateral stability systems in high-rise modular buildings. As an alternative to traditional cast in-situ core, the precast concrete(PC) method can accelerate the construction of reinforced concrete cores. A core composed of precast elements differs from a in-situ core in having connections between the precast elements. The typical vertical connection between PC panels is consisted of shear keys, loop bars, lacer bars and grout. In this study, the effect of vertical connection components on shear strength is investigated experimentally. The test results show that the contribution to the shear strength is greater in order of grout strength, shear keys, lacer bars and loop bars. In addition, the numerical models to estimate the shear strength according to two crack patterns in the vertical joint of the PC panels are derived. The feasibility of the numerical models is evaluated by comparing the estimated shear strength and the test results.

PAP method is a combined measures which consist a anchored retaining wall method with permanent ground anchors and vertical precast concrete panels, step by step on the slope surface. And soil is back filled between slope and vertical precast panels. Therefore, this method is more effective than any other ground anchor reinforcing methods of slope stability, for example cross type concrete block ground anchor or buttress concrete block ground anchor method. Because of increasing effective anchor force and green tree planting.

This paper is a study on the elasto-plastic analysis of reinforced concrete precast large panel connections by rigid element spring model. In the analysis of rigid element spring model, each collapsed part or piece of structures at limiting state of loading is assumed to behave like rigid bodies. The present author propose new elements for the improement and expansion of the rigid element spring model. In this study, it is proposed how the rigid element method can be applied to the elesto-plastic analysis of precat large panel connections. Some numerical results of analytical modeling and load displacement curves are shown.

The purpose of this study is to develop precast concrete structural wall panel that can assure reliable seismic performance. In the previous study, the connection of precast concrete structural wall has some problems in seismic performance. Therefore, this research proposed the precast concrete structural walls which can improve seismic performance. And their seismic performance was verified through lateral loading experiment.

Recently, the area of design optimization, especially structural optimization, has been and to be a continuous active area of research. And the design optimizations of port facilities have been achieved by many other civil engineers. But the design optimization of port facilities were limited to the design optimization of the breasting dolphin. This paper invested the design optimization of mooring pier and the foundations of mooring pier was suggested considering the convenience of repair and reinforcement work. The mooring pier devised with prestressed precast concrete panel and rigid frame welded wide flange beam to steel pipe pile. To accomplish the design optimization of mooring pier, the Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier Method(ALM) of ADS(Garret N. Vanderplaats) optimization routine, BFGS method as optimizer and Golden Section Method as one dimensional search were utilized. As a result, thirty percent of material cost for construction was reduced by design optimization. The tensile stress of concrete panel and bottom flage was critical constraints under service load. So, using high strength concrete and steel will be economical. And lots of initial values must be invested to accomplish the design optimization in design procedures.
Modern earthquake-resistant design aims to isolate architectural precast concrete panels from the structural system so as to reduce the interaction with the supporting structure and hence minimize damage. The present study seeks to maximize the cladding-structure interaction by developing an energy-dissipating cladding system (EDCS) that is capable of functioning both as a structural brace, as well as a source of energy dissipation. The EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to buildings with steel moment resisting frames with the goal of favorably modifying the building response to earthquake-induced forces without demanding any inelastic action and ductility from the basic lateral force resisting system. Because many modern building facades typically have continuous and large openings on top of the precast cladding panels at each floor level for window system, the present study focuses on spandrel type precast concrete cladding panel. The preliminary design of the EDCS was based on existing guidelines and research data on architectural precast concrete cladding and supplemental energy dissipation devices. For the component-level study, the preliminary design was validated and further refined based on the results of nonlinear finite element analyses. The stiffness and strength characteristics of the EDCS were established from a series of nonlinear finite element analyses and are discussed in detail in this paper.
In this study, three dimensional FE analysis of concrete slab track has been performed in order to develop the realistic design of precast concrete slab track. The precast slab track system including the precast concrete slab panel and the grout layer is modeled using the three dimensional solid element with crack softening effect. The input load is computed from the one dimensional beam element model constituting the rail and several discrete springs. To investigate the effect of the longitudinal connection of slab panels, two different systems-continuous and discrete systems - are modeled. The analytical results show that the stresses of both the slab panel and the grout layer are in the range of linear elastic, and, at the interface between two adjacent panels, the primary stresses of the grout layer of the discrete system are higher than those of the continuous system. However, The overall stress levels of the grout layer are very low relative to the strength of th grout.
