  • Suspen-dome structures are extensively used due to their superiority over traditional structures. The friction between cable and joints may severely influence the distribution of cable force, especially during the pre-stressing construction period. An accurate and efficient numerical method has not yet been developed that can be used for estimating the influence of friction on cable force distribution. Thus, this study proposes an efficient friction element to simulate friction between cable and joint. A flowchart for estimating the value of friction force is introduced. These novel numerical methods were adopted to estimate the influence of friction on cable force distribution. The accuracy and efficiency of these numerical methods were validated through numerical tests.

  • FRPs have been used widely and demonstrated in the field of aero industries etc., and began to be used as new construction materials of civil structures. Pre-stressing tendons, reinforcing bars etc. are all examples of the many diverse applications of FRP in new structures. Especially, 40 of all-FRP bridges were reported. The reason why FRP composites were used fur construction materials of civil structures, has been that the working time and the cost of maintenance can be reduced because of the effect of their lightness and durabilities. The purpose of this paper is to report the examples of the many diverse applications of Fiber Reinforced Plastic in construction materials of civil structures.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have proved to be reliable as strengthening materials. Most of existing studies used single types of FRP composites. Therefore, in this experimental study, carbon FRP sheet, aramid FRP sheet, and hybrid FRP plate including glass fibers were fabricated, and the effect of pre-stressed FRP composites on flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams was investigated. In total, eight RC beam specimens were fabricated, including one control beam (specimen N) without FRP composites and seven FRP-strengthened beams. The main parameters were type of FRP composite, the number of anchors used for pre-stressing, and thickness of FRP plates. As a result, the beam strengthened with pre-stressed FRP plate showed superior performance to the non-strengthened one in terms of initial strength, strength and stiffness at yielding, and ultimate strength. As the number of anchors and thickness of FRP plate (i.e., amount of FRP plates) increased, the strengthening effect increased as well. When hybrid FRP plates were pre-stressed, the strengthening effect was higher in comparison with pre-stressed single type FRP plate.

  • Numerous PSC bridges are stregthened by the combined use of continuity of simple spans and addition of external prestressing. In this case prestressing sequences should be carefully checked due to the effect on the stress and camber of girders and slab. Various prestressing sequences were applied in this field test and measured values were analysed. This results show that preatressing sequences affact the stress and deflection of bridge members, so the prestressing sequence should be considered at the desist and construction stages of deteriorated bridges.

  • Recent application researches on external pre-stressing method of composite structures have been conducted to explore its advantages. An external pre-stress could improve mechanical behavior and maintenance, and is economically efficient. In this paper, the Incremental Deformation Method (IDM) was proposed to analyze the elasto-plastic flexural behavior of externally pre-stressed composite bridge with consideration for the material's nonlinearity. This method was verified with experimental results.

  • This research was carried out to investigate several mechanical characteristics of pre-stressed steel beams. The configuration of specimens used for this study were as follows; a cover plate having permissible fiber stress of 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was welded at bottom having the allowable bending stress 2500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam, the section ratios of pre-stressed steel beam and cover plate were 0.5 and 0.6. Adopted pre-stresses were 0%, 50%, and 100% of an allowable fiber stress of a steel beam. The results obtained from the study may be summarized as follows; 1. The elastic range of a beam was increased by the application of pre-stress to the beam, which leads to a lighter section. 2. The permissible moment capacity of a pre-stressed steel beam was greated than that of a steel beam without pre-stressing. 3. The equivalent allowable stress induced by adopting the different section ratio of pre-stressed beam to cover plate were figured out 4. The optimum value of section ratio of beam and cover plate was 0.3 to 0.4 in case of a 1.5m span composite beam, a combination of an allowable stress 2,500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam and a permissible fiber stress 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel cover plate, was used. 5. The magnitude of the pre-stress was desirable to be same as the allowable stress of a steel beam. 6. It was concluded that if the construction techniques in the field are developed and improved, the practicing of pre-stress to the steel structure has a promising future.

  • With the substantial increase of the size of structure, management and monitoring of excavation for the foundation construction becomes more difficult. Therefore, massive collapses which are related to retaining wall recently increase. However, since the study on measuring and monitoring the pre-stressing force of anchor is insufficient, behavior of anchor may not be predicted and monitored appropriately by the existing strain gauge type monitoring system. FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, was adapted to develope a smart anchor. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart anchor and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire fixed to rock with grout.

  • Seismic performance and retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) two-column piers widely used at roadway bridges in Korea was experimentally evaluated. Ten two-column piers that were 400 mm in diameter and 2,000 mm in height were constructed. These piers were subjected to hi-directional cyclic loadings under a constant axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Test parameters were the confinement steel ratio, loading pattern, lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing bars, and retrofitting method. Specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal bars were retrofitted with steel jacket, pre-stressing steel wire, and steel band. Test result showed that while the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings which consisted of two main amplitudes in the transverse axis and two sub amplitudes in longitudinal axis, referred to as a T-series cyclic loadings, exhibited plastic hinges both at the top and bottom parts of the column, the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings in an opposite way, referred to as a L-series cyclic loadings, exhibited a plastic hinge only at the bottom of the column. The displacement ductility of the specimen under the T-series loadings was bigger than that of the specimen under the L-series loadings. Specimen retrofitted with pre-stressing steel wires exhibited poor ductility due to the upward shift of the plastic hinge region because of over-reinforcement, but specimens retrofitted with steel jacket and steel band showed the required displacement ductility. Steel band can be an effective retrofitting scheme to improve the seimsic performance of RC bridge piers, considering its practical construction.

  • To secure the stability of geotechnical infrastructures and minimize failures during the construction process, a number of support systems have been introduced in the last several decades. In particular, stabilization methods using steel bars have been widely used in the field of geotechnical engineering. Rock bolt system is representative support system using steel bars. Pre-stressing has been applied to enhance reinforcement performance but can be released because of the failure of head or anchor sections. To overcome this deficiency, this paper proposes an innovative support system that can actively reinforce the weak ground along the whole structural element by introducing an active tension bolt containing a spring unit to the middle of the steel bar to increase its reinforcement capacity. In addition, the paper presents the support mechanism of the active tension bolt based on a theoretical study and employs an experimental study to validate the performance of the proposed active tension bolt based on a down-scaled model. To examine the feasibility of the active tension unit in a pillar, the paper considers a pullout test and a small-scale experimental model. The experimental results suggest the active tension bolt to be an effective support system for pillar reinforcement.
