Crack initiation mechanism and meso-crack evolution of pre-fabricated cracked sandstone specimens under uniaxial loading

  • The instability and failure of engineered rock masses are influenced by crack initiation and propagation. Uniaxial compression and acoustic emission (AE) experiments were conducted on cracked sandstone. The effect of the crack's dip on the crack initiation was investigated using fracture mechanics. The crack propagation was investigated based on stress-strain curves, AE multi-parameter characteristics, and failure modes. The results show that the crack initiation occurs at the tip of the pre-fabricated crack, and the crack initiation angle increases from 0° to 70° as the dip angle increases from 0° to 90°. The fracture strength kcr is derived varies in a U-shaped pattern as β increased, and the superior crack angle βm is between 36.2 and 36.6 and is influenced by the properties of the rock and the crack surface. Low-strength, large-scale tensile cracks form during the crack initiation in the cracked sandstone, corresponding to the start of the AE energy, the first decrease in the b-value, and a low r-value. When macroscopic surface cracks form in the cracked sandstone, high-strength, large-scale shear cracks form, resulting in a rapid increase in the AE energy, a second decrease in the b-value and an abrupt increase in the r-value. This research has significant theoretical implications for rock failure mechanisms and establishment of damage indicators in underground engineering.

The Fate of Proximal Junctional Vertebral Fractures after Long-Segment Spinal Fixation : Are There Predictable Radiologic Characteristics for Revision surgery?

  • Objective : To investigate the radiographic characteristics of the uppermost instrumented vertebrae (UIV) and UIV+1 compression fractures that are predictive of revision surgery following long-segment spinal fixation. Methods : A total 27 patients who presented newly developed compression fracture at UIV, UIV+1 after long segment spinal fixation (minimum 5 vertebral bodies, lowest instrumented vertebra of L5 or distal) were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups according to following management : revisional surgery (group A, n=13) and conservative care (group B, n=14). Pre- and postoperative images, and images taken shortly before and after the occurrence of fracture were evaluated for radiologic characteristics Results : Despite similar degrees of surgical correction of deformity, the fate of the two groups with proximal junctional compression fractures differed. Immediately after the fracture, the decrement of adjacent disc height in group A (32.3±7.6 mm to 23.7±8.4 mm, Δ=8.5±6.9 mm) was greater than group B (31.0±13.9 mm to 30.1±15.5 mm, Δ=0.9±2.9 mm, p=0.003). Pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging indicated that group A patients have a higher grade of disc degeneration adjacent to fractured vertebrae compared to group B (modified Pfirrmann grade, group A : 6.10±0.99, group B : 4.08±0.90, p=0.004). Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that decrement of disc height was the only associated risk factor for future revision surgery (odds ratio, 1.891; 95% confidence interval, 1.121-3.190; p=0.017). Conclusion : Proximal junctional vertebral compression fractures with greater early-stage decrement of adjacent disc height were associated with increased risk of future neurological deterioration and necessity of revision. The condition of adjacent disc degeneration should be considered regarding severity and revision rate of proximal junctional kyphosis/proximal junction failures.

대용량 DEM 데이터의 효율적 압축을 위한 DEM_Comp 소프트웨어 개발 (DEM_Comp Software for Effective Compression of Large DEM Data Sets)

  • 본 논문에서는 대용량의 수치표고모델(DEM) 데이터의 효율적인 압축을 위해 허프만 코딩과 Lempel-Ziv-Welch 압축방법을 기반으로 하는 새로운 DEM 압축 소프트웨어인 DEM_Comp를 개발하였다. DEM_Comp의 개발을 위해서 $C^{++}$ 언어를 이용하였으며, 모든 Window 플랫폼에서 사용이 가능하도록 하였다. 개발된 소프트웨어의 성능을 평가하기 위해 다양한 지형의 형태를 가지는 DEM에 대해 압축을 수행하고, 출력파일의 용량에 따른 압축효율을 평가하였다. 최근 새로운 지형데이터 취득장비인 LiDAR와 SAR 등에 의해 고해상도의 DEM의 활용이 급격하게 증가하고 있어, 데이터의 저장용량과 전송대역폭을 감소시킬 수 있는 DEM 압축기술이 매우 유용하게 이용되고 있다. 일반적으로 데이터 압축기술은 i) 데이터 사이의 관계를 분석하고, ii) 분석 결과에 따라 압축 및 저장기술을 결정하는 2부분으로 구성되는데, DEM_Comp에서는 정규격자, Lempel-Ziv 압축방법, 허프만 코딩의 3단계 압축 알고리즘을 통해 DEM이 압축된다. DEM_Comp의 압축효율 실험 결과 전처리만 수행하였을 경우 지형의 기복과 상관없이 압축효율은 약 83% 정도를 나타내었지만, 3단계의 압축 알고리즘이 완료된 경우에는 압축효율이 97%까지 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 수치는 일반적인 상업용 압축 소프트웨어들과 비교하여 약 14% 정도의 압축효율이 향상되었음을 나타낸다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서 개발된 DEM_Comp S/W를 이용하면 대용량의 고해상도 DEM의 관리, 저장, 배포를 보다 효율적으로 수행할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Strength failure behavior of granite containing two holes under Brazilian test

  • A series of Brazilian tests under diameter compression for disc specimens was carried out to investigate the strength and failure behavior by using acoustic emission (AE) and photography monitoring technique. On the basis of experimental results, load-displacement curves, AE counts, real-time crack evolution process, failure modes and strength property of granite specimens containing two pre-existing holes were analyzed in detail. Two typical types of load-displacement curves are identified, i.e., sudden instability (type I) and progressive failure (type II). In accordance with the two types of load-displacement curves, the AE events also have different responses. The present experiments on disc specimens containing two pre-existing holes under Brazilian test reveal four distinct failure modes, including diametrical splitting failure mode (mode I), one crack coalescence failure mode (mode II), two crack coalescences failure mode (mode III) and no crack coalescence failure mode (mode IV). Compared with intact granite specimen, the disc specimen containing two holes fails with lower strength, which is closely related to the bridge angle. The failure strength of pre-holed specimen first decreases and then increases with the bridge angle. Finally, a preliminary interpretation was proposed to explain the strength evolution law of granite specimen containing two holes based on the microscopic observation of fracture plane.

압밀특성에 관한 연구 (I) (선행하중이 압밀특성에 주는 영향) (A Study on the Characteristics of Consolidation of Soils (I) (The Influence of Pre-consolidation Load of Soils on Consolidation Characteristics))

  • The determination of the pre-consolidation load known to have a great effect on the consolidation characteristics of the soil have been researched and discussed in detail by many other researchers. A study was undertaken to investigate and compare the effect of pre-consolidation loads on the coefficient of permeability and the consolidation characterisics of soil through the consolidation test on the three types of soil samples. The results of this study are follows; 1. Large compression index is dependent on initial void ratio of the sample being used and the pressure-void ratio curve shows a curved linear relationship in over-consolidated area but a linear relationship in normally consolidated area.2. Settlement-time curve is S-shaped where the pressure is larger than pre-consolidation load and regardless of over-burden pressure, it is a similar straight line respectively in the secondary consolidation area. 3. Primary consolidation ratio of the sample increases almost linearly with the increase of over-burden pressure but the coefficient of volume compressibility decreases linearly with the increase of it. 4. Time factor of a certain degree of consolidation increases with over-burden pressure but the coefficient of consolidation decreases with it in over-consolidated area. There is a linear relationship between them in normally consolidated area. 5. The void ratio of completion point of primary consolidation decreases linearly with over-burden pressure. 6. The coefficient of permeability of sample decreases linearly with over-burden pressure in normally consolidated area, also it increases linearly with increment of the void ratio of the sample.

초등학생 가슴압박소생술과 기본심폐소생술의 교육효과 비교 (Comparison of Educational Effects on Hands-only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by Elementary School Students)

  • Purpose: The object of this study was to compare the educational effect about self-efficacy and the quality of chest compressions of Hands-only CPR and Basic CPR. Methods: It's a nonequivalent control group pre-post repeated quasi-experiment study conducted with entire fifth grade students belong to one school in H city. The study participants are 68 persons, and data were collected from December 2, 2013 to February 7, 2014. Self-efficacy was measured by 10 items, and the quality of chest compressions was measured by 5 variables which are average compression depth(mm), average rate (n/min), average count per minutes (n), abnormal placement (n), compression accuracy (%). Results: Self-efficacy of the experimental group and control group showed no significant difference but showed significant difference over time and was the highest at posttest 1 (immediately after education), the lowest at pretest (before education), middle at posttest 2 (8weeks after education) (p<.001). Experimental group was significantly higher than control group in average rate per minute. At posttest 1, experimental group was $130.0{\pm}9.38$ times, control group was $95.1{\pm}11.82$ times. At posttest2, experimental group was $124.0{\pm}14.89$ times, control group was $90.8{\pm}14.89$ times.(p<.001). Average rate (n/min) was significantly declined at control group in the quality of chest compressions over time (t=-2.400, p=.022). Average count per minute and compression accuracy were declined significantly so it were not maintained to posttest2. Conclusion: We need continuous CPR education because self-efficacy of CPR getting lower significantly over time. Hands-only CPR can't be seen as a way to increase the CPR ability of elementary school students having difficulty to perform artificial breathing. And, because the effect of education is not maintained 8wks after training, the technique centered repeated training is needed and a method which can increase compression accuracy is also needed.

  • 온실가스인 $CO_2$ 배출을 줄이기 위한 연료로서 고효율 연소의 특성을 갖는 수소-천연가스 혼합연료(HCNG)가 유력한 미래 대체연료로서 주목받고 있다. 일반적으로 엔진에서의 압축비 상승은 효율 향상 및 이산화탄소 배출 저감을 위한 방법 중의 하나로서 HCNG 엔진에서도 고압축비의 적용이 효과적일 수 있으나, 수소의 높은 연소 속도 및 화염 온도로 인한 조기착화, 노킹 등의 이상연소는 엔진 부품의 파손 및 출력 저하를 초래할 수 있다. 본 연구는 HCNG 엔진에서 압축비를 변경하여 엔진 성능 및 노킹 특성을 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 기존의 CNG 엔진에 CNG 및 HCNG 연료를 적용하여 공기과잉률의 변화에 따른 연소 특성을 분석하고, 압축비 변경 후 엔진의 성능에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다.

준근사를 이용한 공간 인덱스 압축 기법 (A Spatial Index Compression Scheme Using Semi-Approximation)

  • 수 년간 GIS가 발전하면서 위치 속성을 갖는 공간 데이터에 대한 인덱스 연구가 활발히 진행되어 왔다. 특히, R-tree기반의 인덱스들이 많이 연구되어 왔으며, 주된 이슈는 데이터 검색 성능의 향상이다. 본 논문에서는 공간 데이터에 대한 검색성능 향상을 위해 R-tree의 키 값을 압축하는 준근사(Semi-Approximation) 기법을 제안한다. 이 기법의 기본적인 아이디어는 위치 정보를 포함하는 2-차원 공간 데이터에 대한 인덱스를 압축하여 데이터 검색 성능을 향상시키는 것이다. 이 기법은 MBR의 시작 좌표를 상대좌표로 압축하고 끝 좌표는 전체 탐색영역에 대한 양자화(Quantization)를 통해 계산함으로써 MBR의 확장을 QMBR(quantization of MBR)의 반으로 줄임으로써 노드의 공간 이용률을 높이고 전체적인 탐색 성능을 향상시킨다. 기존에도 인덱스 크기를 줄임으로써 탐색 성능을 향상시키는 방법이 있었지만 본 논문과 같이 양자화의 확장공간을 반으로 축소시키는 연구는 처음이다. 성능평가는 실제 공간데이터를 기반으로 진행하였으며, 실험결과는 SA 기법이 MBR을 압축하는 기존의 연구보다 향상된 성능을 나타낸다.

Estimating the unconfined compression strength of low plastic clayey soils using gene-expression programming

  • The unconfined compression strength (UCS) of soils is commonly used either before or during the construction of geo-structures. In the pre-design stage, UCS as a mechanical property is obtained through a laboratory test that requires cumbersome procedures and high costs from in-situ sampling and sample preparation. As an alternative way, the empirical model established from limited testing cases is used to economically estimate the UCS. However, many parameters affecting the 1D soil compression response hinder employing the traditional statistical analysis. In this study, gene expression programming (GEP) is adopted to develop a prediction model of UCS with common affecting soil properties. A total of 79 undisturbed soil samples are collected, of which 54 samples are utilized for the generation of a predictive model and 25 samples are used to validate the proposed model. Experimental studies are conducted to measure the unconfined compression strength and basic soil index properties. A performance assessment of the prediction model is carried out using statistical checks including the correlation coefficient (R), the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), the relatively squared error (RSE), and external criteria checks. The prediction model has achieved excellent accuracy with values of R, RMSE, MAE, and RSE of 0.98, 10.01, 7.94, and 0.03, respectively for the training data and 0.92, 19.82, 14.56, and 0.15, respectively for the testing data. From the sensitivity analysis and parametric study, the liquid limit and fine content are found to be the most sensitive parameters whereas the sand content is the least critical parameter.

실내 3D 게임 장면의 잠재적 가시 집합을 위한 효과적인 하드웨어 압축 구조 (An Effective Structure of Hardware Compression for Potentially Visible Set of Indoor 3D Game Scenes)

  • 대규모 실내 3D 게임 장면에서 차폐 컬링 정보를 미리 계산하는 잠재적 가시 집합(potentially visible set: PVS)은 데이터를 처리하고 저장해야하는 양이 상당히 크지만 많은 부분이 0으로 표현된다. 본 논문에서는 모바일 환경의 3D 게임 장면 트리 구성 중에 PVS 데이터를 ZRLE (zero run length encoding) 방식으로 압축하는 효과적인 하드웨어 압축 구조를 설계한다. 3D 게임 시뮬레이션을 통하여 제안하는 구조의 PVS 데이터 압축 비율, PVS 컬링과 절두체 컬링에 따른 렌더링 속도 (frame per second: FPS)를 분석하였다.
