Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore perception of clinical experience between the initial and final practice and to explore changes in the perception of clinical experience. Method: The study used a Q-method to measure perception of clinical practice. Thirty-six statements made up the finalized Q-sample. The P sample used thirty three nursing college students from K university. The initial collection was done in the first semester of their junior year and second collection was done in the last semester of their senior year. The Q-sorts by each student were coded and analysed with the Quanl PC program. Result: Many students classified as having the perception type 'alienation of ideal and reality' or 'perception of limitation of ability' in the initial clinical practice changed to the type, 'active participation' by the final clinical practice. Further, in the initial clinical practice, part of 'active participation' and 'perception of limitation of ability' changed to 'alienation of ideal and reality'. Conclusion: This study shows that perception of their clinical practice by student nurses changed in a positive direction through clinical experience and that this fact was related to the level of satisfaction with nursing. The knowledge and understanding obtained in this research provide insights for nursing faculty and students involved in nursing education.
Purpose: This study was conducted to plan and apply simulation-based practice for raising the achievement of program outcomes (POs) in nursing students. Methods: Using convenience sampling, 95 nursing students participated in this descriptive study. A self-reported questionnaire was used to measure the achievement of POs (self-directed learning, problem-solving ability, critical thinking) and usefulness of curriculum in addition to observing tracheal suction skills using a checklist. Results: A scenario with a pneumonia patient was developed to observe tracheal suction skills during simulation-based practices. Self-directed learning, problem-solving ability, and critical thinking were then scored. The mean scores of performance skill, self-directed learning, problem-solving ability, critical thinking were $37.82{\pm}6.03$. $3.61{\pm}0.38$, $3.61{\pm}0.33$, and $3.73{\pm}0.32$, respectively. All students passed the simulation-based practice in terms of performance ability and met the required achievement level for the POs at this university. Students with good suction skills showed significant differences in problem identification (p=.044) and alternative development (p=.019), which are components of problem-solving ability, compared to students with only fair skills. Conclusion: These findings indicate that simulation-based practice related to an adult nursing respiratory course was useful for evaluating the achievement of POs in nursing students. Further study is needed to develop a universal method of outcome measurement.
Purpose. This study compared the awareness of the evidence-based practice(EBP) in 100 physical and occupational therapists. Methods. A questionnaire on awareness was conducted to examine the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP. A questionnaire consisted of items on the general characteristics, the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP of the subjects. Data analysis was made by IBM SPSS Statistics Ver. 20. The EBP awareness was examined by the independent t-test. Results. For the attitude toward EBP, there was a statistically significant difference in the item of 'Therapists should judge whether they apply study results to individual patient. For the educational experience of EBP, there was no statistically significant difference in all items. For the performance ability of EBP, there was a statistically significant difference in the item about the ability to understand patient's desire for treatment and treatment preference and the item about the ability to determine appropriate treatment process in cooperation with patients. Conclusions. Both two groups showed very low results in the attitude toward EBP, the educational experience of EBP, and the performance ability of EBP. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance EBP education in undergraduate programs and the clinical field.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of communication ability between paramedic students and patients in clinical practice. In addition, it was performed to produce essential data contributing to the qualitative improvement of communication ability. Methods: Data were collected from paramedic students with clinical experience after they provided online consent. Data collection was performed from June 3 to July 12, 2022. One hundred forty-seven questionnaires with 92 items were analyzed using SPSS statistics 28.0. Results: 57.1% of students took communication as a subject despite 92.5% of respondents saying that communication education is necessary for them. The average level of participant communication ability was 4.60 (±1.05) points (measured on a 7-point Likert scale). Among the subdivided communication ability levels, the highest level was demonstrated in the physical examination-related interview (5.36±0.96), and the lowest was shown in the completion part (3.93±1.51). Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found in communication ability level according to school grade (F=4.709, p=.000). The highest correlation (r=.972, p<.001) was obtained between total communication ability and understanding the patient's point of view. Conclusion: Paramedic students should improve their communication skills to serve patients more effectively. Finally, more educational content should be developed on field-based situations in communication courses.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of organizational culture on professionalism. A survey was conducted with 254 family health specialists from July 30th to September 30th in 2013. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, three professionalism factors of healthy family specialists were verified -business administration ability, and general administration ability- and five organizational culture factors of the Family Welfare Organization were verified-group culture, development culture, rational culture, sequence culture, and regulation culture. Second, the professionalism scores for healthy family specialists were 3.41 for business practice ability, 3.43 for business administration ability, and 3.18 for general administration. The organizational culture scores for the family welfare organization were 4.08 for group culture, 3.80 for development culture, 3.67 for rational culture, 3.50 for regulation culture, and 3.06 for sequence culture. Third, Rational culture, age, gender, and education level all affected to business practice ability. Position and education level both affected to business administration ability. Monthly income, gender, and education level all affected to general administration ability. This study showed the need for increased management of organizational culture to improve the professionalism of healthy family specialists.
Purpose: This study was conducted to design and implement a fundamental nursing practice based on flipped learning and to examine the effects. Methods: Participants were 57 students who were taking the fundamental nursing practice course at D university in N city. The study included processes of instructional design, action/effects and reflection. Data were analyzed using paired t-test with the SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: In the instructional design stage, the class consisted of 3 parts: outside class (pre-learning), inside class (assessment, collaborative practice, peer review, reflection), after-class (self-directed practice, feedback). In the action/effects stage, the flipped learning was applied for 15 weeks according to the instructional design and then the effects of flipped learning were evaluated. Students showed a significant improvement in self-directed learning ability (t=-3.56, p=.001) and critical thinking disposition after the class (t=-3.72, p<.001). Finally, in the reflection stage, the researchers examined whether the four pillars of flipped learning occurred. Conclusion: Findings indicate that flipped learning applied in fundamental nursing practice is effective in improving self-directed learning ability and critical thinking disposition. The action research method was a useful way to foster professor's educational competency as well as to verify effects of a new nursing education method.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the level and correlation of knowledge and practice of fever management at home and provide data for the development of an intervention program to improve the fever management ability of mothers of preschool age children. Methods: Participants were 112 mothers with children between 1 and 6 years of age and attending one of three daycare centers located in J city. The participants had a history of using medication and tepid massage. Data were collected during April, 2016. Results: The mean scores were 27.55 (correct answer rate 70.64%) of 39 for knowledge, and 75.93 of 92 for fever management practice. There were significant differences in scores for knowledge according to the number of children and number of visits to doctors for treatment of a fever. There were no differences in scores for practice. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and practice. Psychiatric nursing is a specialty where nursing students experience many difficulties in applying what they have learned in theory to clinical practice. Therefore, a situation-oriented case-based strategy is required to help them overcome the limitations of psychiatric nursing clinical practice and reduce their burden. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of a psychiatric nursing clinical practice program using situation-oriented case-based learning. Participants comprised 63 nursing students in psychiatric nursing classes. The students were asked to create a scenario of interaction between a nurse and patient based on a case study. Empathy, therapeutic communication ability, and attitudes toward mental illnesses were measured. We analyzed the effectiveness of the program by comparing changes in the nursing students' empathy, therapeutic communication ability, and attitude toward mental illness after the program. The participants showed significant increases in empathy and therapeutic communication abilities. However, there were no significant changes in attitudes toward mental illnesses. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that situation-based learning will be effective for students who have difficulties in certain aspects, such as COVID-19, or where there are limited clinical practice opportunities, such as psychiatric nursing.
