We present a test of the emission statistics of active galactic nuclei (AGN), probing the connection between the red-noise temporal power spectra and multi-modal flux distributions known from observations. We simulate AGN lightcurves under the assumption of uniform stochastic emission processes for different power-law indices of their respective power spectra. For sufficiently shallow slopes (power-law indices beta ${\leq}$ 1.0), the flux distributions (histograms) of the resulting lightcurves are approximately Gaussian. For indices corresponding to steeper slopes (beta ${\geq}$ 1.0), the flux distributions become multi-modal. This finding disagrees systematically with result of recent mm/radio observations. Accordingly, we conclude that the emission from AGN does not necessarily originate from uniform stochastic processes even if their power spectra suggest otherwise. Possible mechanisms include transitions between different activity states and/or the presence of multiple, spatially disconnected, emission regions.

A variety of metal vacuum systems displays the celebrated 1/t pressure, namely, power-law dependence on time t, with the exponent close to unity, as to the origin of which there has been long-standing controversy. Here we propose a chemisorption model for water adsorbates, based on the argument for 2D fermion behavior of water adsorbed on a metal surface, and obtain analytically the power-law behavior of pressure with an exponent unity. Further, the model predicts that the pressure should depend on the temperature T according to $T^{1.5}$, which is indeed confirmed by our experiment.
Convergence rates in the law of large numbers for i.i.d. random variables have been generalized by Gut[Gut, A., 1978. Marc inkiewicz laws and convergence rates in the law of large numbers for random variables with multidimensional indices, Ann. Probab. 6, 469-482] to random fields with all indices having the same power in the normalization. In this paper we generalize these convergence rates to the identically distributed and negatively associated random fields with different indices having different power in the normalization.
The power inequality ${\prod}_{k=1}^{N}\;{x}_{k}^{x_{k}}\;{\geq}\;{\prod}_{k=1}^{N}\;{p}_{k}^{x_{k}}$ holds for the points $(x_1,{\ldots},x_N),(p_1,{\ldots},p_N)$ of the simplex. We show this using the analytic method combining Frostman's density theorem with the strong law of large numbers.

The analysis model is the infinite body consisted of power law creep material containing a rigid inclusion with line crack shape subjected to the arbitrarily directional stress on an infinite boundary. The crack analysis is performed using the complex pseudo-stress function. The strain rate intensity factor is determined in the closed form as new fracture mechanics parmeter which represents the magnitudes of stress and strain rate near the tip in power law creep material.
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers(ADCPs) have capability to concurrently capitalize three-dimensional velocity vector and bathymetry with highly efficient and rapid manner, and thereby enabling ADCPs to document the hydrodynamic and morphologic data in very high spatial and temporal resolution better than other contemporary instruments. However, ADCPs are also limited in terms of the inevitable unmeasured regions near bottom, surface, and edges of a given cross-section. The velocity in those unmeasured regions are usually extrapolated or assumed for calculating flow discharge, which definitely affects the accuracy in the discharge assessment. This study aimed at scrutinizing a conventional extrapolation method(i.e., the 1/6 power law) for estimating the unmeasured regions to figure out the accuracy in ADCP discharge measurements. For the comparative analysis, we collected spatially dense velocity data using ADV as well as stationary ADCP in a real-scale straight river channel, and applied the 1/6 power law for testing its applicability in conjunction with the logarithmic law which is another representative velocity law. As results, the logarithmic law fitted better with actual velocity measurement than the 1/6 power law. In particular, the 1/6 power law showed a tendency to underestimate the velocity in the near surface region and overestimate in the near bottom region. This finding indicated that the 1/6 power law could be unsatisfactory to follow actual flow regime, thus that resulted discharge estimates in both unmeasured top and bottom region can give rise to discharge bias. Therefore, the logarithmic law should be considered as an alternative especially for the stationary ADCP discharge measurement. In addition, it was found that ADCP should be operated in at least more than 0.6 m of water depth in the left and right edges for better estimate edge discharges. In the future, similar comparative analysis might be required for the moving boat ADCP discharge measurement method, which has been more widely used in the field.
Existing bibliometric laws have been established on the basis of well defined science journals with a long history. However, the history of technology innovation research in Korea is young and the scope of the research is diverse compared with other fields. The main purpose of this research can be summarized as follows : Can the traditional bibliometric laws be used to explain the young and diverse data derived from technology innovation studies in Korea. Second, we want to compare the explain ability of the power law, compared with the traditional laws in the field. Third, we propose a quasi index related to the well-known impact factor to measure the contribution of a journal or a group of journals to the development of innovation research in Korea. We confirmed Lotka's and Bradford's laws which are used to measure the productivity of researchers, but we could not support the validity of Price's Square Root law as Nicholls (1998) could not. On the citations to journals, Garfield's laws is not observed. However, the power law fits well the citations to author, journal, article, and book. The estimated parameters between 1.6 and 3.5 are similar to the values in the range of 1.5 and 3 in previous studies. Finally the quasi index shows that the influence of international leading journals on innovation research in Korea is weaker than on innovation studies in the world.
The development of electric vehicle power electronics system control, composed of DC-AC inverters and DC-DC converters, attract much research interest in the modern industry. A DC-AC inverter supplies the high-power motor torques of the propulsion system and utility loads of electric vehicles, whereas a DC-DC converter supplies the conventional low-power and low-voltage loads. However, the need for high-power bidirectional DC-DC converters in future electric vehicles has led to the development of many new topologies of DC-DC converters. The nonlinear control of power converters is an active research area in the field of power electronics. This paper focuses on the use of the fuzzy sliding mode strategy as a control strategy for buck-boost DC-DC converter power supplies in electric vehicles. The proposed fuzzy controller specifies changes in control signals based on the surface and knowledge on surface changes to satisfy the sliding mode stability and attraction conditions. The performance of the proposed fuzzy sliding controller is compared to that of the classical sliding mode controller. The satisfactory simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed control law, which reduces the chattering phenomenon. Moreover, the obtained results prove the robustness of the proposed control law against variations in load resistance and input voltage in the studied converter.

Gas submerged jet is an outstanding thermohydraulic phenomenon in pool scrubbing of fission products during a severe nuclear accident. Experiments were performed on the hydraulic characteristics in the ranges of air mass flux 0.1-1400 kg/m2s and nozzle diameter 10-80 mm. The results showed that the dependence of inlet pressure on the mass flux follows a power law in subsonic jets and a linear law in sonic jets. The effect of nozzle submerged depth was negligible. The isolated bubbling regime, continuous bubbling regime, transition regime, and jetting regime were observed in turn, as the mass flux increased. In the bubbling regime and jetting regime, the air volume fraction distribution was approximately symmetric in space. Themelis model could capture the jet trajectory well. In the transition regime, the air volume fraction distribution loses symmetry due to the bifurcated secondary plume. The Li correlation and Themelis model showed sufficient accuracy for the prediction of jet penetration length.
