  • In this paper, a new design method of H$H_\infty$-Qn PSS using genetic algorithm(GA) is proposed to efficiently damp low frequency oscillations despite the uncertainties and various disturbances of power systems. The selection method of evaluation function is proposed for selecting the robust PSS parameters. All QFT boundaries are satisfied automatically and H$H_\infty$-norm is minimized simultaneously without trial and error procedure. The eigenvalues and the damping ratio of dominant oscillation mode are investigated to evaluate performance of designed controller for one machine infinite bus system. A disturbance attenuation performance is investigated through singular value bode diagram of the system. Dynamic characteristics are considered to verify robustness of the proposed PSS by means of nonlinear simulations under various disturbances for various operating conditions. The results show that the proposed PSS is more robust than conventional PSS.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the appropriate parameter selection of a power system stabilizer and power converters in two-area power systems with a series HVDC links. The method for PSS is one of the classical techniques by allocating properly poly-zero positions to fit as closely as desired the ideal phase lead and by changing the gain to produce a necessary damping torque. Proper parameter of power converters are obtained in order to have sufficient speed and stability margin to cope with changing reference values and disturbances based on the Root-locus technique. The small signal and transient stability studies using the PSS and power converters parameters obtained from these methods show that a natural oscillation frequency of the study case system is adequately damped. The simulation used in the paper was performed by the Power System Toolbox software program based on MATLAB.

  • In this paper, the synchronous generator model which is derived from the swing equation and the Park's equation is transformed to an adequate form for feedback linearization. And the single controller is designed in order to play the role of both PSS and AVR. The result of the simulations shows that the stability of the system is guaranteed in the wide range of operating points.

  • This paper describes a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the design of robust low-order power system stabilizers (PSSs), which are used to damp out local-mode oscillations of synchronous generators. The performance of a PSS is expressed as the location of the closed-loop poles, and a single fixed-gain pole-placement controller is synthesized for a wide range of operating conditions. The synthesis results in simultaneous regional pole-placement stabilization. and is formulated as an LMI feasibility problem with a rank condition. A penalty method is applied to solve the rank-constrained LMI problem. Numerical experiments with a single-machine connected to an infinite bus system were performed to demonstrate the proposed method.

  • Based on the results in the first-part paper, PSS tuning methods including the determination of PSS gain and compensation of phasor lagging are investigated in this second part. In the phase compensation, PSS should compensate phase lagging, resulted from power system-generator-excitation system loop, to provide damping torque in equal phase with the generator speed. Also, PSS gain should be determined to provide maximum damping torque as much as possible without the other modes unstable. In this paper, gain tuning method using the root-locus and the phase compensation of PSS at the one machine with infinite bus system are presented. The differences between PSS tuning at the tuning condition and at the least-stable condition are also discussed.

  • In this paper, we design the GA-fuzzy precompensator of a Power System Stabilizer for Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor(TCSC-PSS) for enhancement of power system stability. Here a fuzzy precompensator is designed as a fuzzy logic-based precompensation approach for TCSC-PSS. This scheme is easily implemented by adding a fuzzy precompensator to an existing TCSC-PSS. And we optimize the fuzzy precompensator with a genetic algorithm for complements the demerit such as the difficulty of the component selection of fuzzy controller, namely, scaling factor, membership function and control rules. Nonlinear simulation results show that the proposed control technique is superior to conventional TCSC-PSS in dynamic responses over the wide range of operating conditions and in convinced robust and reliable in view of structure.

  • In this paper, the robust superconductor flywheel energy storage system(SFESS) controller using $H_{\infty}$ control theory was designed to damp low frequency oscillation of power system. The main advantage of the $H_{\infty}$ controller is that uncertainties of power system can be included at the stage of controller design. Both disturbance attenuation and robust stability for the power system were treated simultaneously by using mixed sensitivity $H_{\infty}$ problem. The robust stability and the performance for uncertainties of power system were represented by frequency weighted transfer function. To verify control performance of proposed SFESS controller using $H_{\infty}$ control, the closed loop eigenvalue and the damping ratio in dominant oscillation mode of power system were analyzed and nonlinear simulation for one-machine infinite bus system was performed under disturbance for various operating conditions. The results showed that the proposed $H_{\infty}$ SFESS controller was more robust than conventional power system stabilizer (PSS).

  • In this paper, the power system stabilizer(PSS) using the sliding mode observer-model following(SMO-MF) with closed-loop feedback (CLF) for single machine system is extended to multimachine system. This a multimachine SMO-MF PSS for unmeasureable plant state variable is obtained by combining the sliding mode-model following(SM-MF) including closed-loop feedback(CLF) with the full-order observer(FOO). And the estimated control input for unmeasurable plant sate variables is derived by Lyapunov's second method to determine a control input that keeps the system stable. Time domain simulation results for the torque angle and for the angular velocity show that the proposed multimachine SMO-MF PSS including CLF for unmeasurable plant sate variables is able to damp out the low frequency oscillation and to achieve asymptotic tracking error between the reference model state at different initial conditions and at step input.

  • Dynamic stability problems have been experienced with a generator connected to an infinite bus through a long transmission line. Nuclear turbine-generator units #1 and #2 at the Winsconsin Electric Power Point Baech Station were found to be dynamically unstable when one unit is isolated on one of the lines to Milwaukee or when two units are isolaed on the lines to milwaukee. Power System Stabilizers(PSS) were applied to the excitation system to provide stable operation under these conditions. Suitable settings for the PSS were predetetermined analytically by computer method and root licus analysis of an equivalent single machine-infinite bus configuration. This procedure allows graphical approach to the design of power stabilizers and serves as assynthesis procedure when the design constraints are relaxed so the the speed stabilizer is required ro provide animprovement in system damping. A simplified model of the complete exciter generator system is shown to be adequate for this type of analysis.

  • In this paper, we design the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Precompensator(ANFP) for the suppression of low-frequency oscillation and the improvement of system stability. Here, ANFP is designed to compensate the conventional Power System Stabilizer(PSS). This design technique has the structural merit that is easily implemented by adding ANFP to an existing PSS. Firstly, the Fuzzy Precompensator with Loaming ability is constructed and is directly learned from the input and output data of the generating unit. Because the ANFP has the property of learning, fuzzy rules and membership functions of the compensator can be automatically tuned by teaming algorithm Loaming is based on the minimization of the ems evaluated by comparing the output of the ANFP and a desired controller. Case studies show the 7posed schema can be provided the good damping of the power system over the wide range of operating conditions and improved dynamic performance of the system.
