Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) is one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of transportation. It has many outstanding advantages such as higher energy efficiency and much lower emissions than internal combustion engine vehicles. It also has the ability of recovering braking energy. In order to design an FCHV drive train, we need to determine the size of the electric motor, the Fuel Cell System (FCS), and the battery. In this paper, the methodology for the sizing of these components is introduced based on the driveability constraints of the FCHV. A power management strategy is also presented because the battery energy capacity depends on it. The warm-up time of the FCS is also considered in the power management strategy and the simulation result is compared to that without considering the warm-up time.

As environmental pollution and fossil fuel energy problems from fuel vehicle have occurred, the interest of electric vehicle(EV) has increased. EV industry and energy industry have grown dynamically in these days. It is expected that the next generation of primary transportation will be EV, and it is necessary to prepare EV infra and efficient energy management such as EV communication protocol, EV charge station, and smart grid. Those EV and energy industry fields are now on growth. Also, the study and development of them are now in progress. In this paper, distributed charge signal processing software for smart slow and quick EV charge is proposed and designed for dealing with EV charge demand. The software consists of smart slow and quick EV charge schedule engine and EV charge power distribution core. The software is designed to support two charge station types. One is normal EV charge station and the other is bus garage EV charge station. Both two types collect the data from EV charge stations, and then analyze the collected data. The software suggests optimized EV charge schedule and deliveries EV charge power distribution information to power switchboard system, and the designed software is implemented on embedded system. It is expected that the software provides efficient EV charge schedule.
Korean manufacturing industry have recently faced the catch-up of China in the mass commodity product, such as automotive, display, and smart phone in terms of market as well as technology. Accordingly, discussion on the importance of achieving catch-up in complex product systems (CoPS) has been increasing as a new innovation engine for the industry. In order to achieve successful catch-up of CoPS, we explored emerging technologies of CoPS, which are featured by the characteristics of radical novelty, relatively fast growth and self-sustaining, through the study of emerging technologies of gas turbine for power generation. We found that emerging technologies of the gas turbine are technologies for combustion nozzle and composition of electrical machine for increasing power efficiency, washing technology for particulate matter, cast and material processing technology for enhancing durability from fatigue, cooling technologies from extremely high temperature, interconnection operation technology between renewable energy and the gas turbine for flexibility in power generation, and big data technology for remote monitoring and diagnosis of the gas turbine. We also found that those emerging technologies resulted in technological progress of the gas turbine by converging with other conventional technologies in the gas turbine. It indicates that emerging technologies in CoPS can be appeared on various technological knowledge fields and have complementary relationship with conventional technologies for technology progress of CoPS. It also implies that latecomers need to pursue integrated learning that includes emerging technologies as well as conventional technologies rather than independent learning related to emerging technologies for successful catch-up of CoPS. Our findings provide an important initial theoretical ground for investigating the emerging technologies and their characteristics in CoPS as well as recognizing knowledge management strategy for successful catch-up of latecomers. Our findings also contribute to the policy development of the CoPS from the perspective of innovation strategy and knowledge management.

This paper provides a case study of landfill gas (LFG) utilization fer direct use as process fuel, and for electrical power generation at restored landfills in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China (HKSAR). The paper specifically covers the LFG utilization schemes, which are required under landfill restoration contracts at the Shuen Wan and Urban Landfills. These contracts provide for the restoration and aftercare of six landfills, and are administered by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Government. The LFG utilization scheme at the Shuen Wan Landfill incorporates the direct use of LFG by compressing and dehumidifying the LFG prior to conveyance through a 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) pipeline. The pipeline provides an alternate fuel source to naphtha during process heating for gas production at the Tai Po Gas Production Plant of the Hong Kong and China Gas Limited (HKCC). The LFG utilization scheme at the Jordan Valley Landfill (one of the Urban Landfills) beneficially uses the LFG as fuel for electrical power generation with reciprocating internal combustion engines. The LFG is compressed, cooled, and filtered prior to delivery to two engine/generator sets. This system provides power to operate the leachate pre-treatment plant, which processes leachate from all of the Urban Landfill sites. The case study will examine the technical and non-technical considerations, including harriers, for developing, designing and implementing the LFG utilization projects in Hong Kong. Specific regulatory considerations and external governmental agency approvals are discussed, including the requirement to register as a gas-producing utility. While the paper focuses on LFG utilization applications in Hong Kong, many of the considerations discussed are also applicable to development of LFG utilization in other regions of Asia.

Internal combustion engines release 30~40% of the energy from fossil fuels into the atmosphere in the form of exhaust gases. By utilizing this waste heat, plenty of energy can be conserved in the auto industry. Thermoelectric generation is one way of transforming the energy from engine's exhaust gases into electricity in a vehicle. The thermoelectric generators located on the exhaust pipe have been developed for vehicle applications. Different experiments with thermoelectric generators have been conducted under various test conditions as following examples: hot gas temperature, hot gas mass flow rate, coolant temperature, and coolant mass flow rate. The experimental results have shown that the generated electrical power increases significantly with the temperature difference between the hot and the cold side of the thermoelectric generator and the gas flow rate of the hot-side heat exchanger. In addition, the gas temperature of the hot-side heat exchanger decreases with the length of the thermoelectric generator, especially at a low gas flow rate.

A plan for the development of reliability-based ROK amphibious assault vehicles is proposed. By analyzing the development case of the U.S. EFV, considerations for the successful development of the next-generation Korea Forces amphibious assault vehicle are presented. If the vehicle reliability can be improved to the level of the fourth highest priority electric unit for power units, suspensions, decelerators, and body groups, which have the highest priority among fault frequency items, a system level MTBF of 36.4%↑ can be achieved, and the operational availability can be increased by 3.5%↑. The next-generation amphibious assault vehicles must fulfill certain operating and performance requirements, the underlying systems must be built, and sequencing of the hybrid engine and the modular concept should be considered. Along with big-data- and machine-learning-based failure prediction, machine maintenance based on augmented reality/virtual reality and remote maintenance should be used to improve the ability to maintain combat readiness and reduce lifecycle costs.
The product to be developed in this study is a heat recovery device which generates steam or hot water at high temperature and high pressure by heating water using exhaust gas from diesel engine, gas engine, gas turbine, etc. as an exhaust gas boiler off heat boiler(EGB) type for ship and power generation. The steam vapor or the created warm water is used as the power source required for the steerage heating and hot water facility or the HFO heating of the ship, and the turbine drive. The principle of waste heat boilers serves to heat water as high temperature exhaust gas with heat pass through the tube of the boiler. The heated water is a structure that is sent to a cabin or turbine device in the form of steam. In this study, the objective of this study is to maximize the efficiency by increasing the heat transfer surface by replacing the tube which is the heat transfer part of EGB with the plate tube.

Internal combustion engines typically expel 30%-40% of the energy supplied by fuel to the environment through their exhaust system. Therefore, further significant improvements in the thermal efficiency of IC engines are possible by recovering the waste heat from the engine exhaust gas. With this fact in mind, a numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the potential of using thermoelectric generation with an internal combustion engine for waste heat recovery. Physical parameters such as the exhaust temperature and mass flow rate were evaluated in the exhaust system, and the optimum location for inserting a thermoelectric generator (TEG) into the system was determined. The TEG will be located in the exhaust system and will use the energy flow between the warmer exhaust gas and the external environment. The optimum position of the temperature distribution and the TEG performance were predicted through numerical analysis. The experimental results obtained showed that the power output significantly increases with the temperature difference between the cold and hot sides of the TEG.

The thermodynamic efficiency characteristics of R245fa and water as working fluids have been analyzed for the electricity generation system applying the Rankine cycle to recover the waste heat of the exhaust gas from a diesel engine for the propulsion of a large ship. The theoretical calculation results showed that the cycle, system, and total efficiencies were improved as the turbine inlet pressure was increased for R245fa at a fixed mass flow rate. In addition, the net work rate generated by the Rankine cycle was elevated with increasing turbine inlet pressure. In the case of water, however, the maximum system efficiencies were demonstrated at relatively small ratios of mass flow rate and turbine inlet pressure, respectively, compared to those of R245fa. The optimized values of the net power of the cycle, system efficiency, and total efficiency for water had relatively large values compared to those of R245fa.
In recent years, the needs for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles have driven to use the alternative fuel of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the more stringent legislations without many modifications to current engine. LPLi (Liquid Phase LPG Injection) system (the 3rd generation LPG injection system) is the core technology to produce power equivalent to a gasoline engine with less emissions. The LPG fuel pump can supply the compressed LP gas in the liquid phase to engine. The fuel filter is attached in the fuel pump to eliminate the remnants in the liquid phased LP gas and the performance of blowoff flow for a pump can be varied with various filters. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the performance and efficiency of the impeller type LPG fuel pump under various filter types of microfiber, double mesh and external filter. And blowoff flow for a LPG fuel pump was measured according to the temperature of the fuel.
