The Conventional approach for estimating the locations of transmission line shunt faults has been to measure the apparent impedance to the fault from a line terminal and to convert the reactive component of the impedance to line length. But, these methods do not adequately address the problems associated with the fault location on distribution systems. This thesis presents a technique that estimates the location of shunt fault on a radial distribution system that has several single and multiphase laterals. Tapped loads and non-homogenity of the distribution system are take into account. The developed technique, which can handle shunt faults was tested to evaluate its suitability. Results from computer simulation of faults on a model of a 25KV distribution lines like real system are presented. The results approved that the proposed technique works well for estimating the locations of the distribution line shunt faults.

This paper proposes novel protection schemes for grid-connected distributed generation (DG) units using the fault location algorithm. The grid-connected DG would be influenced by abnormal distribution line conditions. Identification of the fault location for the distribution lines at the relaying point of DG helps solve the problems of the protection relays for DG. The proposed scheme first identifies fault locations using currents and voltages measured at DG and source impedance of distribution networks. Then the actual faulted feeder is identified, applying time-current characteristic curves (TCC) of overcurrent relay (OCR). The method considering the fault location and TCC of OCR might improve the performance of the conventional relays for DG. Test results show that the method prevents the superfluous operations of protection devices by discriminating the faulted feeder, whether it is a distribution line where DG is integrated or out of the line emanated from the substation to which the DGs are connected.
The physical infrastructure of the power systems, including the high-voltage transmission towers and lines as well as the poles and wires for power distribution at a lower voltage level, is critical for the resilience of the community since the failures or nonfunctioning of these structures could introduce large area power outages under the extreme weather events. In the current engineering practices, single circuit lattice steel towers linked by transmission lines are widely used to form power transmission systems. After years of service and continues interactions with natural and built environment, progressive damages accumulate at various structural details and could gradually change the structural performance. This study is to evaluate the typical existing transmission tower-line system subjected to synoptic winds (atmospheric boundary layer winds). Effects from the possible corrosion penetration on the structural members of the transmission towers and the aerodynamic damping force on the conductors are evaluated. However, corrosion in connections is not included. Meanwhile, corrosion on the structural members is assumed to be evenly distributed. Wind loads are calculated based on the codes used for synoptic winds and the wind tunnel experiments were carried out to obtain the drag coefficients for different panels of the transmission towers as well as for the transmission lines. Sensitivity analysis is carried out based upon the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) to evaluate the structural capacity of the transmission tower-line system for different corrosion and loading conditions. Meanwhile, extreme value analysis is also performed to further estimate the short-term extreme response of the transmission tower-line system.
This paper describes operational characteristics of wind turbine induction generators interconnected with distribution networks using PSCAD/EMTDC. Due to the simple and durable structure, induction generators are the most common type used in wind Power generation. Generally, induction generators are classified into two groups according to the shape of rotor, one is squirrel-cage type and the other is wound-rotor type. In this study, we simulate the start-up and the output variation of generators interconnected with distribution networks and compare the operational characteristics of squirrel -cage type and wound-rotor type induction generators located in the unfaulted distribution lines about the disturbance occurred on the associated distribution feeders emanated from the substation to which wind turbine generator is connected. In order to obtain the realistic results, we use the radial distribution network of IEEE 13-bus model.
During a ground fault the maximum fault current and neutral to ground voltage will appear at the pole nearest to the fault. Distribution lines are consisted of three phase conductors, an overhead ground wire and a multi-grounded neutral line. In this paper phase to neutral faults were staged at the specified concrete pole along the distribution line and measured the ground fault current distribution in the ground fault current, three poles nearest to the fault point, overhead ground wire and neutral line. A effect by grounding resistance of poles of ground fault current in the 22.9[kV] multi-ground distribution system. by field tests.
Recently, various measures have been discussed for overcoming depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. One of the measures is electric vehicles. But electric vehicles has some limitations from high cost of battery and low efficiency, so operation distance of electric cars is limited. Also there are difficulties that charging lines should be connected by an electric car whenever it charges. Thus, many studies have been conducted to overcome the limitation using conventional batteries of electric vehicles. As a result, the OLEV(On-Line Electric Vehicle) was developed. But the OLEV system is some limitations. The OLEV system causes power quality problems when it charges. Power quality problem cannot be ignored because OLEV systems are closely connected by distribution grids. In this paper, the OLEV system is designed by using PSCAD/EMTDC, and the power quality is measured and evaluated. Power quality is divided by two cases; harmonics and high-frequency. Harmonics were evaluated according to IEEE Std. 519-1992. But the evaluation of High-frequency could not take it because there was no standard. For this reason, the data measured by OLEV system was compared with the EN50065 regulation.
Wigner-Ville distribution has been recognized as a useful tool and applied to various types of mechanical noise and vibration signals, but its limitation which mainly comes from the cross-talk has not been well addressed. The cross-talk takes place for a signal with multiple components, simply because the Wigner-Ville distribution is a bilinear transform. The cross-talk often causes a negative value in the distribution. This cannot be accepted for the Wigner- Ville distribution, because it is an expression of power. Smoothing the Wigner-Ville distribution by convoluting it wih a window, is most commonly used to reduce the cross-talk. There can be infinite number of distributions depending on the windows. In this paper, we attempted to develop a distribution which is the best or the optimal in reducing the cross-talk. This could be possible by employing the ambiguity function. For a general signal, however it is difficult to express the ambiguity function as a mathematically closed form. This requires an appropriate modeling to make such expression possible. We approximated the Wigner-Ville distribution as a sum of linear segments. In the ambiguity function domain, the legitimate components are reflected as linear lines passing through the origin. Every lines has its own length and slope. But, the cross-talk is widely distributed in the ambiguity function plane. Based on this realization, we proposed a two-dimensional window which is in fact 'rotating window', that can eliminate cross-talk component. The rotating window is examined numerically and is found to have a better performance in reducing the cross-talk than conventional windows, the Gaussian window.
