  • Failure of small bore piping welds is a recurring problem at nuclear power plants. And the socket weld cracking in small bore piping has caused unplanned plant shutdowns for repair and high economic impact on the plants. Consequently, early crack detection, including the detection of manufacturing defects, is of the utmost importance. Until now, the surface inspection methods has been applied according to ASME Section XI requirements. But the ultrasonic inspection as a volumetric method is also applying to enforce the inspection requirement. However, the conventional manual ultrasonic inspection techniques are used to detect service induced fatigue cracks. And there was uncertainty on manual ultrasonic inspection because of limited access to the welds and difficulties with contact between the ultrasonic probe and the OD(outer diameter) surface of small bore piping. In this study, phased array ultrasonic inspection technique is applied to increase inspection speed and reliability. To achieve this object, the 3.5 MHz phased array ultrasonic transducer are designed and fabricated. The manually encoded scanner was also developed to enhance contact conditions and maintain constant signal quality. Additionally inspection system is configured and inspection procedure is developed.

  • Gyeongbu and Namhae expressways in the country, are the major arterial highways which are connected with the Busan port in the north-south and east-west directions, respectively, and required to study the traffic characteristics about the hourly volume factors(K-factor) by concentrated midium-size and large-size cargo trucks of 20% or higher in expressways. We therefore attempted to predict the K-factor in expressways through the correlation analysis between K-factor and K-factor estimates on the basis of the short-term VDS data collected at the basic segments of the above major expressways. As a result, power model appeared to be appropriate in predicting K-factor by the K-factor estimate based on VDS data for 7 days with a high explanatory power and validity.

  • Previous long-term measurements of the Uldolmok tidal current power plant showed that the structure's natural frequencies fluctuate with a constant cycle-i.e., twice a day with changes in tidal height and tidal current velocity. This study aims to improve structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for offshore structures under a harsh tidal environment like the Uldolmok Strait. In this study, lab-scale experiments on a simplified offshore structure as a lab-scale test structure were conducted in a circulating water channel to thoroughly investigate the causes of fluctuation of the natural frequencies and to validate the displacement estimation method using multimetric data fusion. To this end, the numerical study was additionally carried out on the simplified offshore structure with damage scenarios, and the corresponding change in the natural frequency was analyzed to support the experimental results. In conclusion, (1) the damage that occurred at the foundation resulted in a more significant change in natural frequencies compared with the effect of added mass; moreover, the structural system became nonlinear when the damage was severe; (2) the proposed damage index was able to indicate an approximate level of damage and the nonlinearity of the lab-scale test structure; (3) displacement estimation using data fusion was valid compared with the reference displacement using the vision-based method.

  • It has been confirmed that the inner defect of insulator and the perfect diagnosis for aging are closely related to safe electric power transmission system and that the detection of accident and diagnosis technique turn out to be very important issues. But perfect diagnosis is difficult because discharge pattern is irregular. Thus, we investigated discharge pattern using the new distribution statistical models with cross-inked polyethylene(XLPE) specimens. Voltage was applied to power frequency by step method, and calibration of discharge was set to 50 pC. After the voltage was applied, it measured the discharge occurring during 10s. We investigated discharge pattern using the K-means analysis and Weibull function. We also investigated variation of centroid and shape parameter due to variation of voltage. As a result of analyzing K-means, it was confirmed that cluster including many object numbers was formed by the presence of void. And result of Weibull distribution, it was confirmed that shape parameter of discharge varied from 1.28 to 1.62 in no void specimens, and that shape parameter of discharge number varied from 1.28 to 1.62. In the void, shape parameter of discharge varied from 5.66 to 6.43, and shape parameter of discharge number varied from 5.05 to 5.08.

  • The emissivity is different because the emitted angle changes according to the position of the infrared thermography camera and object. Because of this, the temperature distribution expressed when measuring the temperature by using the infrared thermography system is not the accuracy temperature. Although the real surface temperature is constant, the temperature measured by using infrared thermography camera have error in accordance with the value of emissivity. In this paper, the temperatures of the round cylindrical object and the flat square object that heated to the equal temperature were measured by infrared thermography camera. The emissivity calibration formula and correction table are made with the affect of the view angle and emission angle form the surface temperature value. The error of measured temperature values are corrected by using the emissivity calibration formula and correction table, and apply to defect detection of the nuclear power plant pipe. From the calibration method, reliability surface temperature values were obtained.

  • Advances in smart sensors, embedded systems, low-power design, ad-hoc networks and MEMS have allowed the development of low-cost small sensor nodes with computation and wireless communication capabilities that can form distributed wireless sensor networks. Time information and time synchronization are fundamental building blocks in wireless sensor networks since many sensor network applications need time information for object tracking, consistent state updates, duplicate detection and temporal order delivery. Various time synchronization protocols have been proposed for sensor networks because of the characteristics of sensor networks which have limited computing power and resources. However, none of these protocols have been designed with time representation scheme in mind. Global time format such as UTC TOD (Universal Time Coordinated, Time Of Day) is very useful in sensor network applications. In this paper we propose network time protocol extension for global time presentation in wireless sensor networks.

  • Recently, there are many cases to use a ship's engine performance analyzer(SEPA) to measure pressure in cylinder and top dead center(TDC) of piston of engine, and analyze its performance such as fuel injection time and horsepower as well as wear of piston ring. But, SEPA needs TDC pulses($T(1){\sim}T(n)$) generated when pistons of engine are located to the TDC position ($TDC(1){\sim}TDC(n)$), these pulses are gathered from sensors connected to gear wheel of the propeller shaft in the remote distance from the measurement point. Therefore, operators need a long wire cable(WRC) to TDC detecting sensor to get these pulses, but this method is a very uncomfortable and expensive in case of installation, and it might decrease user's purchase desire. In this paper, we design and fabricate a small and inexpensive MODEM cable(M0C) so that it may be available to transmit TDC pulse generated from sensor in propeller shaft through existing power line. We also verify the facts that this MOC can be applied to SEPA and the effectiveness of the system through the experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a new symbol time synchronization scheme suitable for the OFDM system with an interpolator. The proposed scheme performs the following three steps. In the first step, the coarse symbol time synchronization is achieved by continuously measuring the average power of the received envelope signal. Based on this average power, the detection possibility for the symbol time synchronization is determined. It the signal is sufficient for synchronization, we next perform a relatively accurate symbol time synchronization by measuring the correlation between a short training signal and the received envelope signal. Finally, an additional frequency synchronization is performed with a long training signal to correct symbol synchronization errors caused by the phase rotation. From the simulation results, one can see that the proposed synchronization scheme provides a good synchronization performance over frequency selective channels.

  • The main objective of this study is systemization of the technique of ROC quantification and optimization of baseline design by applying CE principle to the acquisition process of a weapon system. QFD and TOA techniques can be employed to a good working example of the conceptual design of a future main battle tank. In this paper, Product Planning Phase, the first phase of four QFD phases, is deployed in terms of eight steps including customer requirements and final product control characteristics. TOA is carried out considering only combat weight. In order to perform combat weight analysis and performance TOA, Preliminary Configuration Synthesis Methodology is used. Preliminary Configuration Synthesis Methodology employs the method of least squares and described linear equations of weight interrelation equation for each component of tank. As a result of QFD based upon the ROC, it was cleared that armor piercing power, main armament, type of ammunition, cruising range, combat weight, armor protection, power loading, threat detection and cost are primary factors influencing design and that combat weight is the most dominant one. The results of TOA based on the combat weight constraint show that 5100 lb reduction was required to satisfy the ROC. The baseline design of a future main battle tank is illustrated with assumption that all phases of QFD are employed to development and production process of subsystems, components, and parts of main battle tank. TOA is applied in iterative process between initial baseline design and ROC. The detailed design of each component is illustrated for a future main battle tank.

  • This paper deals with the parallel operation of two PWM converters for auxiliary block of high speed train. The parallel operation of AC/DC PWM converter controlled by 3-level PWM switching method to operate switching devices to realize a high power factor and reduce the primary side of the transformer current harmonics is proposed. In this paper, it is presented the phase shift technique between two converters switching phase, solution to eliminate the coupling effects due to the transformer and zero crossing detection method for synchronized with the source and controller. Experimental results for laboratory system with TMS320C31 microprocessor and 10[kVA]PWM converter confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm.
