  • The basalt fiber is expected to become a trend for industrial fibers as they have better properties of heat-resistant, non-combustion, absorbent, soundproof, moistureproof, lightweight, corrosion resistant, and high strength properties. Also, the fiber is found to be non-toxic and harmless to the human body. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the chemical and mineral compositions of powdered sludge of basalt produced at seven sites on Jeju Island for the development of fire resistance insulating material for a building. The results showed that the basalt stone sludge is made from only sodium calcium aluminum silicate and ferridioside components unlike the basalt rock.

Permeability Characteristics of Soils Mixed with Powdered Sludge of Basalt (현무암 석분슬러지 혼합토의 투수특성)

  • In this study, the mixed soil with an optimum mixed ratio was suggested in order to recycle the powdered sludge of basalt in Jeju Island as the impermeable liner materials. As the results of soil laboratory tests, the grain size of the powdered sludge of basalt is less than 0.1mm and the powdered sludge was classified into ML or CL category in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Also, the grain size of natural soils is ranged from 0.1 mm to 10 mm and the soils were classified into SW category in USCS. To select the optimum mixed ratio of powdered sludge, the variable permeability test was performed to various mixed soils with different powdered sludge amount under both optimum compaction and field conditions. As the results of permeability tests, the coefficient of permeability of mixed soils was decreased with increasing the mixed ratio of powdered sludge, and the mixed soil with mixed ratio of 60% has the minimum coefficient of permeability. Therefore, the optimum mixed ratio of powdered sludge is 60% for recycling the powdered sludge of basalt as the impermeable liner materials.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the manufacturability of artificial lightweight aggregate as a way to recycle basalt powder sludge, which is a waste produced during the manufacturing process of basalt in Jeju. Powdered waste glasses and calcium carbonate are used to improve the characteristics of manufactured artificial lightweight aggregate. Especially, considering the complex factors of basalt powder sludge, powdered waste glasses, and sintering method, the amount of calcium carbonate is appropriate at the 9 wt.% in order to improve the intumescent of lightweight aggregate. Also, the amount of powdered waste glasses is effective with using less than 50 wt.% and applying the direct sintering method at the same time on decreasing the absorption of lightweight aggregate. Furthermore, in order to manufacture artificial lightweight aggregate of high quality with a low specific gravity and low water absorption, it is considered to be more effective to apply the direct sintering method after the surface of artificial lightweight aggregate is covered with powdered waste glasses.

Permeability Characteristics of Cement Mixtures with Powdered Sludge of Basalt in Jeju Island (제주도 현무암 석분슬러지를 포함한 시멘트 혼합체의 투수특성)

  • In this study, the coefficient of permeability for cement mixtures including the powdered sludge of basalt, sand or fly ash with different mixed ratios was measured in order to reuse the powdered sludge of basalt in Jeju Island as the cut off materials. As the permeability test results, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with fly ash was increased with increasing the fly ash contents. The amount of fly ash in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 8 %. Meanwhile, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with sand was increased with increasing the sand contents. The amount of sand in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 40 %. According to the comparison result of cement mixtures including fly ash or sand, it is more advantageous to put the sand into the cement mixtures, rather than mixing the fly ash.
