Consolidation of Thermal Electric Material Powder by MPC Process and Thermal Electric Properties (MPC 공정에 의한 열전반도체 분말의 성형 및 열전특성)

  • N-Type $SbI_3$ doped $95%Bi_2Te_3+5%\;Bi_2Se_3$ compounds were newly fabricated by the combination of gas atomization process and Magnetic Pulsed Compaction process. The thermoelectric properties of the MPCed bulks according to consolidation temperatures were investigated by a combination of microscopy, XRD and thermoelectric property testing. The microstructure of MPCed bulk shows homogeneous and fine distribution through consolidated bulks due to the high solidification of compound powders. The research presented the challenges toward the successful consolidation of thermoelectric powder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and analysis of thermoelectric properties of the consolidated bulks.

  • In this paper, the fundamental attributes, phase composition of three pre-alloyed powders for diamond tools by water atomization were investigated. The density, hardness, bend strength and bending modulus of their hot pressing samples were examined. The results showed that the three pre-alloyed powders have excellent low temperature sintering characteristics. The physical and mechanical properties of the samples were found to be nearly the same as those of fine cobalt powders.

Mechanical Properties of Al-Ti Base Alloys Processed Via Rapid Solidification and Mechanical Alloying (급냉응고 및 기계적 합금화된 Al-Ti계 합금의 기계적 성질)

  • Rapidly solidified and mechanically alloyed Al-Ti base alloys were prepared by gas atomization and attritor milling separately. The gas atomized and the mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated after preheating at $450^{\circ}C$, and then heat treated isochronally for 1 hour to observe the microstructures and to investigate the mechanical properties. Stable phases of precipitates in the Al-Ti-Si and the Al-Ti-Zr alloys were identified as DO22-$(Al,Si)_3Ti$ and $Do_{23}-Al_3(Ti, Zr)$ each. Among the alloys, the mechanically alloyed Al-l0Ti-2Si alloy showed superior thermal stability and mechanical properties at elevated temperature. The additions of third elements, such as Si and Zr, to Al-Ti alloys seemed to improve the mechnical properties remarkably by stabilizing the microstructure and the precipitate phases in the consolidated alloys.

  • The effect of consolidation temperature on the microstructure, density and mechanical properties (especially, wear property) of $Al_{92.5}-Fe_{2.5}-Cr_{2.5}-Ti_{2.5}$ alloy fabricated by gas atomization and magnetic pulsed compaction was investigated. All consolidated alloys consisted of homogeneously distributed fine-grained fcc-Al matrix and intermetallic compounds. Relative higher mechanical properties in the MPCed specimen were attributed to the retention of the nanostructure in consolidated bulk without cracks. The as consolidated bulk by magnetic pulsed compaction showed the enhanced wear properties than that of a general consolidation process. In addition, the wear mechanism and fracture mode of MPCed bulk was discussed.

  • This study focused on examining the possibility for recycling of Fe-Si electric sheet. We manufactured Fe-6.5Si mother alloy using by Fe-Si electric sheet scrap for transformer core materials. And then, soft magnetic alloy powder which diameter and shape were $45{\sim}150{\mu}m$ and sphere type was prepared by gas atomization process. As we compared to commercial Fe-6.5Si powder, its diameter distribution and microstructure of recycled powder was a similar. To investigate the possibility of reusing the soft magnetic composite sheet for electronics, recycled powder was treated to have a high aspect ratio (AR), and we finally obtained the 65~66 AR and $2.3{\mu}m$ thickness powder. To release the residual stress of powder, heat treatment was conducted under $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, $N_2$ gas. And then, soft magnetic sheet was made by tape casting process using by those powders. After the density and permeability of tape was measured, and we confirmed that the recycled Fe-Si electric sheet scrap was possible to reuse the soft magnetic materials of electronics.

A Study on the Wear Properties of Cu-free Ecofriendly Vehicle Brake Pad (구리를 함유하지 않은 친환경 자동차 브레이크 패드의 마모 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The friction characteristics of Al-Fe alloy powders are investigated in order to develop an eco-friendly friction material to replace Cu fiber, a constituent of brake-pad friction materials. Irregularly shaped Al-Fe alloy powders, prepared by gas atomization, are more uniformly dispersed than conventional Cu fiber on the brake pad matrix. The wear rate of the friction material using Al-8Fe alloy powder is lower than that of the Cu fiber material. The change in friction coefficient according to the friction lap times is 7.2% for the Cu fiber, but within 3.8% for the Al-Fe alloy material, which also shows excellent judder characteristics. The Al-Fe alloy powders are uniformly distributed in the brake pad matrix and oxide films of Al and Fe are homogeneously formed at the friction interface between the disc and pad, thus exhibiting excellent friction and lubrication characteristics. The brake pad containing Al-Fe powders avoids contamination by Cu dust, which is generated during braking, by replacing the Cu fiber while maintaining the friction and lubrication performance.

Effects of Annealing of Gas-atomized Fe-Si-Cr Powder (Fe-Si-Cr 분말합금의 열처리 효과)

  • Effects of annealing of the gas-atomized Fe-9%Si-2%Cr powder which is suitable for high frequency application in mobile devices because of its high electrical resistivity were studied with an emphasis on the order-disorder phase transition. The formation of B2 ordered phase could not be suppressed during atomization process. When the powder was annealed at a temperature higher than $550^{\circ}C$ the peak diffracted from $DO_3$ phase could be detected. With increasing annealing temperature lattice parameter and coercivity decreased. An interesting phenomenon was an abrupt increment of coercivity in the powder annealed at $450^{\circ}C$. Highest permeability could be shown in the powder annealed at a relative low temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ and then the permeability decreased with annealing temperature. The above-mentioned results could be successfully explained by both the formation of $DO_3$ ordered phases and the change of electrical resistivity of the Fe-Si-Cr powder which was also originated from the phase transition.

Properties of Bulk and Powder of $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ Amorphous Alloy Produced by He Gas Atomization (헬륨가스분사법으로 제조된 $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ 비정질합금 분말과 성형재의 특성)

  • Properties of $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ alloy powder produced by helium gas atomization process were investigated by using DSC, XRD, SEM and TEM. The powders below 32 ${\mu}m$ in diameter were identified as an amorphous phase mixed with a ${\alpha}-Al$ phase. $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy was manufactured by hot extruding the alloy powders at various temperatures, and the estimation of its mechanical properties was carried out subsequently. As a result, the bulk alloy extruded at the temperature below $450^{\circ}C$ exhibited the microstructure in which the near-spherical shape of some powders below 20 ${\mu}m$ were nearly unchanged and fine voids between matrix and powders were formed during extrusion process. On the other hand, the tensile strength and elongation at room temperature for $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ were 750 MPa and 7.5%, respectively.

  • In this research, the effect of Sc on the micro structure and mechanical properties of Al-20Si alloy powders and their extruded bar was investigated. The Al-20wt%Si and Al-20wt%Si-0.6wr%Sc powders were produced by gas atomization. The micro structures of the alloy powders and extrude was examined by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The alloy powders were subsequently canned, degassed and extruded in order to produce the alloy bulk. It was found that the micro structure of the Al-20Si alloy powder was refined and the mechanical properties was significantly improved by the addition of 0.6Sc.
