  • This paper presents a hypothesis and its experimental validation that ∆E (Esec, corr - Ecorr) of cyclic polarization curve of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy decreases firstly and then increases with the increasing of corrosion rate or corroded fraction Fcorr of alloy surface. The minimum value of ∆E is obtained when Fcorr ≈ 50%. In addition, a proportional relationship between ∆E and |50% - Fcorr| was found. This non-monotonic relation between ∆E and extent of localized corrosion indicates that additional attention should be paid on using ∆E to assess localized corrosion behaviour of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys.

  • Characterizing electrochemical polymerization of polypyrrole film on a substrate depends on many parameters. Among them, potential difference and cumulative charges play important role. The level of potential difference affects the quality of the polypyrrole. On the contrary, cumulative charge affects the thickness of the polypyrrole. The substrate surface is adjusted physically and chemically by treating with sandblasting and the addition of thiol for surface adhesion improvement. Experimental results show that the sandblasted and thiol treated substrate provides better. adhesion than non-sandblasted and non-thiol treated substrate.

  • It is not easy to analyze the strong nonlinear time series and effectively design a good prediction system especially due to the difficulties in handling the potential uncertainty included in data and prediction method. To solve this problem, a new design method for fuzzy prediction system is suggested in this paper. The proposed method contains the followings as major parts ; the first-order difference detection to extract the stable information from the nonlinear characteristics of time series, the fuzzy rule generation based on the hierarchically classifying clustering technique to reduce incorrectness of the system parameter identification, and the IT2TSK fuzzy logic system to reasonably handle the potential uncertainty of the series. In addition, the design of the multiple predictors is considered to reflect sufficiently the diverse characteristics concealed in the series. Finally, computer simulations are performed to verify the performance and the effectiveness of the proposed prediction system.

  • A method of calculating the excess Helmholtz free energy from the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio for two-center-Lennard-Jones liquids has been presented. The bent effective acceptance ratio has been newly composed from the acceptan ce ratio for the potential energy difference between a configuration in the Metropolis Monte Carlo procedure and random virtual configuration generated by the separate parallel Monte Carlo procedure and the Boltzmann factor for half the potential energy difference. The excess Helmholtz free energy was calculated directly from the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio through a single Metropolis Monte Carlo run. Because the separate parallel Monte Carlo procedure was used, this method can be applied to molecular dynamics simulations. For two-center-Lennard-Jones liquids, the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio gave better results than use of the modified effective acceptance ratio in the previous work.

  • In this paper, the safety for passengers of composite car-body against lightning strikes was analyzed by the application of an impulse generator which can produce impulse current up to 50 [kA] with 8/20 [us] waveform. Potential difference on inside surface of the car-body was measured as a safety parameter for the passengers against lightning strikes. The potential difference between 20 [cm] distant was 175 [V] at 37.67 [kA], and it corresponded to 875 [V] between 1 [m] distant. The amount of charge flowing a passenger at 100 [kA] impulse current can be estimated to 0.31 [mA s]. This is much less than the limit amount of charge for human body, 30 [mA s] which is presented by Koeppen and Osypka.

  • It is known fact that the CTS patients have lower pinch strength than the normal people. And we can assume that the sensory nerve action potential(SNAP) and the nerve conduction velocity(NCV) of the CTS group are lower or slower than the normal subjects. This paper analysed the grip strength and performed EMG experiment for the group Norm, G1 and G2. The results are as follows: 1) CTS patients have lower pinch strength than normal people. 2) There was no significant difference on SNAP between the CTS group and the normal group. 3) There was significant difference on NCV among Norm, G1, and G2 group. Especially, significant level was higher in the evening after the continuous use of wrist.

  • Conventional reinforced concrete design codes assume ideal strain evolution in semi-deep beams with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) web strips. However, there is a strain interaction between internal stirrups and web strips, leading to a notable difference between code-based and experimental shear strengths. Current study provides an experiment-verified detailed numerical framework to assess the potential strain interaction under quasi-static monotonic load. Based on the observations, steel stirrups are effective only for low EB-FRP amounts and the over-strengthening of semi-deep beams prevents the stirrups from yielding, reducing its shear strength contribution. A notable difference is detected between the code-based and the study-based EB-FRP strain values, which is a function of the normalized FRP stress parameter. Semi-analytical relations are proposed to estimate the effective strain and stress of the components considering the potential strain interaction. For the sake of simplification, a linearized correction factor is proposed for the EB-FRP web strip strain, assuming its restraining effect as constant for all steel stirrup amounts.

  • In this study, an experimental method to be able to induce the evoked potential which was reflecting the activity of brain was designed, when the electromagnetic wave was exposed at human or not. The influence of the electromagnetic wave on each component of the evoked potential was discussed. Each component of N100, P100, N200, P300 and so on of the evoked potential was measured in the designed experimental method, And it was observed that the difference existed at each component when the electromagnetic wave was exposed and not exposed.

  • Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to study on the transient current due to the change of environmental temperature under no external field in the arrangement of M$_{1}$(metal)-P(polyver)-M$_{2}$(metal). The specimer of polymeric insulator sandwiched by two metal electrodes composes a parallel-plate condenser represented by Maxwell-model. The behaviors of short circuit current flowing in M-P-M arrangement are very complex and the analysis of its conduction mechanism appears to be much complicated. In this paper we can suggest that a contact potential difference as an energetic state exists in the thin film specimen both sides of which are contacted by two different metals having different cook functions. Futhermore the contact potential difference appears to be constant through the course of temperature change, however, the dielectric constant and caparitance of the specimen must be temperature dependent. Accordingly the charge difference induced on both sides of electrodes may be a cause for the shory circuited transient current flowing through the external circuit. It is also suggestive that the results of the observation must be considered in cases of insulation design of electrical machines and D.C. cable for high voltage use.
