  • This study investigated the effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) treatments on the acid resistance of dentin exposed to secondary caries. Sixteen bovine dentin specimens with artificially induced caries were assigned to the following four groups: untreated negative control, untreated positive control, SDF-treated (SDF), and SDF and KI-treated (SDFKI). Multispecies cariogenic biofilms containing Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, and Candida albicans were cultured on the specimens for 28 days, except for the negative control group. Specimens from the negative control group were stored in phosphate-buffered saline for that period. After a cariogenic biofilm challenge, the degree of demineralization was evaluated using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). As a result of data analysis using micro-CT, the demineralization depths of the negative control, positive control, SDF, and SDFKI groups were 149.0 ± 7 ㎛, 392.0 ± 11 ㎛, 206.0 ± 20 ㎛, and 230.0 ± 31 ㎛, respectively. The degree of demineralization was significantly reduced in the SDF and SDFKI groups compared with that in the untreated positive control group. There were no significant differences between the SDF and SDFKI groups. This study confirmed that SDF and SDFKI treatments increase the acid resistance of dentin to secondary caries. KI did not significantly affect the caries-arresting effect of the SDF.

  • In this study, the effect of additives on the performance of aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) using quinoxaline and ferrocyanide as active materials in alkaline supporting electrolyte is investigated. Quinoxaline shows the lowest redox potential (-0.97 V) in KOH supporting electrolyte, while when quinoxaline and ferrocyanide are used as the target active materials, the cell voltage of this redox combination is 1.3 V. When the single cell tests of AORFBs using 0.1 M active materials in 1 M KCl supporting electrolyte and Nafion 117 membrane are implemented, it does not work properly because of the side reaction of quinoxaline. To reduce or prevent the side reaction of quinoxaline, the two types of additives are considered. They are the potassium sulfate as electrophile additive and potassium iodide as nucleophilie additive. Of them, when the single cell tests of AORFBs using potassium iodide as additive dissolved in quinoxaline solution are performed, the capacity loss rate is reduced to $0.21Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}per\;cycle$ and it is better than that of the single cell test of AORFB operated without additive ($0.29Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}per\;cycle$).

  • The reaction of potassium fluoride with amyl iodide in presence of dimethylformamide at low temperature gave a fluorination product together with decane. Polyhalogenated acid such as ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$,-dichloro-${\beta}$-phenyl-propionic acid gave ${\alpha}$-chlorostyrene, fluorinated styrene, and fluorinated acid. The same reaction with the ethyl ester did not give the fluorination product and gave a mixture of various dimerized product. Dibromostyrene gave bromostyrene together with fluorination product. Iodo acid such as m-iodo acid gave the salt and a trace quantity of dimerized product. Iodides such as m-iodotoluene and 1-amino-4-iodo-2-methyl benzene did not show any appreciable reactivity towards potassim fluoride. The reaction condition was described, and fluorination, ${\alpa}$-dehydrofluorination, decarboxylation, and dimerization were discussed.

  • 1,2,3,4,5,6-Hexaalkyl-1,4-dibora-2-cyclohexene was not produced by the general preparation method in our laboratory because of difficulties in the preparation of $B_2Cl_4.$ 2,3-Dietyl-1,4,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-dibora-2-cyclohexene, 2 was synthesized by the reduction-oxidation reaction of potassium and methyliodide from 1,4-dimethyl-2,3-diethyl-1,4-dibora-2-cyclohexene, 1 as a substrate. Cobalt sandwich-complexes, 6, 7 and 8 were synthesized by the reaction of 2,3-diethyl-1,4,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-dibora-2-cyclohexene with $({\eta}5-C_5H_5Co(C_2H_4)_2.$.

  • A new PVC membrane potentiometric sensor that is highly selective to Hg2+ ions was prepared, using bis(2-hydroxybenzophenone) butane-2,3-dihydrazone (HBBD) as an excellent hexadendates neutral carrier. The sensor works satisfactorily in the concentration range of 1.0 × 10-6 to 1.0 × 10-1 mol L-1 (detection limit 4 × 10-7 mol L-1) with a Nernstian slope of 29.7 mV per decade. This electrode showed a fast response time (~8 s) and was used for at least 12 weeks without any divergence. The sensor exhibits good Hg2+ selectivity for a broad range of common alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions (lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, lead and lanthanum). The electrode response is pH independent in the range of 1.5-4.0. Furthermore, the developed sensor was successfully used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of mercury ions with potassium iodide and the direct determination of mercury in some binary and ternary mixtures.

  • The discovery of 2'-spirocyclopropyl-ribocytidine (J. Med. Chem. 2010, 53, 8150-8160) as a potent inhibitor of RNA synthesis by NS5B ($IC_{50}=7.3{\mu}M$), the RNA polymerase encoded by hepatitis C Virus (HCV), has led to the synthesis and biological evaluation of several carbocyclic versions of 2'-spiropropyl-nucleosides. The cyclopentenol intermediate 7 was successfully constructed via ring-closing metathesis (RCM) from divinyl 6. Spirocyclopropanation of enone 8 was effected by using (2-chloroethyl)-dimethylsulfonium iodide and potassium tert-butoxide to form the desired intermediate 9. The synthesized nucleoside analogues 21-24 were assayed for their ability to inhibit HCV RNA replication in a subgenomic replicon Huh7 cell line. Among them, the cytosine nucleoside analogue 22 exhibited significant anti-HCV activity ($EC_{50}= 8.2{\mu}M$).

  • A combination of thymol and sodium bisulfate was found to be an effective biocidal agent against strains of Burkholderia cepacia and of Xanthomonas maltophilia that were found in the space shuttle water system. Potassium iodide (KI), the biocidal agent used in the past, had a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 50,000 ppm against the two B. cepacia (541 STS-81 and 1119 STS-91) strains, whereas that of thymol and sodium bisulfate was 2,400 and 950 ppm, which was 21 and 53 times lower than that of KI for B. cepacia, respectively. The MIC value for the combination of thymol and sodium bisulfate was 4 times lower than that for thymol or sodium bisulfate alone against B. cepacia (541 STS-81, 1119 STS-91) or Pseudomonas cepacia (ATCC 31941). The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) of the combination of thymol and sodium bisulfate for all organisms tested was less than 0.5, indicating a strong synergistic effect.

  • Undaria pinnatifida (UP) has long been ingested by woman who was delivered of a child. The present study was investigated to find out the contractive compound from UP and the contractive mechanism. The active extract, MeOH extract was partitioned with $CHCl_3$ and water. Whereas potassium iodide and alginic acid do not affected the uterus contraction, $CHCl_3$ extract significantly increased uterus contraction in vitro and in situ studies. The contraction by $CHCl_3$ extract was not blocked by atropine, prazosin and propranolol. Blood estrogen level was not changed by $CHCl_3$ extract.

  • N- vs. S-Substitution reactions of 1-substituted tetrazoline-5-thiones with various allyl or benzyl halides were studied in order to find effective conditions for N-substitution reactions. When allyl or benzyl halides were reacted with 1-substituted tetrazoline-5-thiones in the presence of TMSI or $BF_3{\cdot}OEt_2$ (or other Lewis acids), N-substitution at 4-position in addition to S-substitution occurred. Reactions were performed either with or without a solvent such as dioxane or propionitrile in the presence of potassium iodide.

  • The equivalent conductances of sodium, potassium, ammonium, tetramethylammonium, triethylammonium, diethylammonium and ethylammonium iodide, and picrate salts of sodium and potassium in ethylene carbonate have been measured at 40.0 $^{\circ}C. The limiting equivalent conductances of the salts have been computed by Fuoss-Onsager-Skinner equation. The limiting ionic equivalent conductances of $Na^+,\;K^+,\;and\;NH^+$ are in order of $Na^+ which is the reverse order of solvation for the ions in any solution, And the order of limiting ionic equivalent conductances for alkylammonium ions is $(C_2H_5)_4N^+<(C_2H_5)_3NH^+<(CH_3)_4N^+<(C_2H_5)_2NH_2^+<(C_2H_5)NH_3^+$ which coincides with the order of mass transfer. From the dissociation constants of the saltss determinde by Fuoss-Kraus method, it is found that ethyene carbonate is a good ionizing solvent for the salts. In addition, Stokes radii and effective fadii of ions have been calculated by Stokes law and Nightingale method, repectively. From the results, it appears tha alkylammonium ions and picrate ion seem to be not solvated, and tha iodide ion is fairly solvated in ethylene carbonate.
