  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the changes on nutrient uptake and yields of onion when it was applied with urea and ammonium sulfate as nitrogen fertilizer types; potassium chloride and potasssium sulfate as potassium fertilizer types and lime requirement and phosphorus absorption coefficient controlled 5% as soil improvement index. The variety of onion used was CheonJuHwang and the soil used was Yonggye series in the Jeonnam Muan area. The amounts of N, P and K uptake were higher in the mixed application plot of ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate than in the plot of urea or potassium chloride. The sulfate content of soil was higher in the period of plant growth than in the harvest stage. The sulfate content of plant was highest in the harvest stage and this content was higher in the stem and in the leaf than in the bulb. The sugar content of onion was 7.43~8.23 Brix content was higher in the large bulb than in the small bulb. The weight of dry matter and the rate of good quality were high in the mixed application plot of ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate, so the yield of onion was increased 2~6% compared with control.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the frech and dry matter yields and feed values of Sorghum$\times$Sudangrsss Hybrid in accordance with different nitrogen and potassium fertilizer sources at the Dae-Ho reclaimed tidal land, Korea from 2003 to 2004. Soil salt contents of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) were higher than that of the urea plot(T2), but that of potassium sulfate plot(T6) was the lowest. The fresh yields of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) and potassium sulfate plot(T6) were higher than that of the urea plot(T2) as $173\%,\;173\%,\;144\%\;and\;90\%$. respectively. The dry matter and total digestible nutrient(TBN) yields were similar tendency like the results of the fresh matter yields. The crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) contents of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) were higher than those of urea plot(T2), but those of potassium sulfate plot(T6) were the lowest. On the other hand, TDN content in potassium sulfate plot(T6) was the highest. It was desirable to use ammonium sulfate$(20\~30kg\;N/10a)$ and potassium sulfate fertilizer$(15kg\;K_2O/10a)$ than those of urea and potassium chloride fertilizer on reclaimed tidal land in view of forage production and its feed value.

  • Potassium (K) is one of the essential nutrients for plants but is not a constituent of any plant compound. K is substances for activation of many enzymes and influences the process that the enzymes are involved in catalyzing. Although experimental results associated with the K effects with both benefits and no effects on turfgrass growth were reported, the limited research results of K effects on turfgrass among K sources are available in Korea. The objectives of the study was conducted to evaluate responses of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) treated by fertilizer treatments with six K sources. There were six fertilizer treatments as K sources applied to Kentucky bluegrass which were potassium nitrate (13-0-44, PN), potassium chloride (0-0-60, PC), potassium sulfate (0-0-50, PS), polymer-coated potassium sulfate (0-0-45, PPS), potassium thiosulfate (0-0-25, PT), and potassium sulfate granulated with methylene urea (20-0-25, PSU). Potassium of $8g\;m^{-2}$ and N of $5g\;m^{-2}$ was applied 4 times giving a total 20 and $30g\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Although significant differences were found for turfgrass color, quality, chlorophyll index, and clipping dry weight, no consistent results among K sources were found during the one year study. Overall, K treatments didn't affect turfgrass growth in this study.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of potassium salts on the changes of chemical properties in submerged soil. Rice plants were cultured in submerged soil using potassium salts. Obtained results were as follows. In the submerged soil cultured with rice plants the value of pH was higher in the potassium chloride plot than in the potassium sulfate plot. The leaching of cations such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and ammonium were higher in the potassium chloride plot than in the potassium sulfate plot. On the other hand, the leaching of phosphate ion was slightly higher in the potassium sulfate plot than in the potassium chloride plot. The leaching of iron was higher in the planted plot than in the non-planted plot, but that of silica was higher in the non-planted plot than in the planted plot. However, the leaching of iron and silica was not affected by potassium salts.

  • An experiment on strawberry (Fragaria Grandflora EHRH) was conducted in order to compare the effect of two compound fertilizers made for this crop, by Kyonggi Chemical Crop. LTD. with that of muriate of potash, sulfate of potash and ammonium nitrate in a farmer's vinylhouse during the winter period of 1984 to 1985. Results obtained are as follows; 1. The effect of compound fertilizers on the growth, number of inflorescences and yield of strawberry showed no significant difference from the effect of muriate of potash, sulfate of potash and ammonium nitrate. But the former increased the content of reduced, and total sugars soluble in diluted acid in the juice of strawberry. 2. As a whole, sulfate of potash increased sugar content in strawberry juice more than muriate of potash, which became the reason to increase the sugar content in the strawberry juice harvested from the compound fertilizer plots.

  • This study was conducted to select proper soil amendments in order to reduce the occurrence of potato scab and maintaining soil health by applications of dolomitic lime, sulfur, potassium sulfate, shell meal fertilizer, silicate fertilizer, lime nitrogen and ammonium sulfate fertilizer in different pH levels of volcanic ash soil with continuous cultivation of potato. In potassium sulfate-applied plot with a low soil pH, the incidence rate and disease severity of scab were lowest at 84.4% and 28.4%, respectively. Those were lowest among the treatments. Value of potato scab control was 12.3% and marketable yield of potato was highest at 93.2%. In lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a), the incidence rate was low at 38.3%, and control value was 23.8% and marketable yield of potato was high at 66.3%. In relatively higher pH soils, the incidence rate of scab was lowest at 38.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a). Value of potato scab control was 23.8%, which was four times higher than that in sulfur-applied plot. Marketable yield of potato was highest at 66.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot. In the lime nitrogen plot infected with potato scab pathogen such as S. acidiscabies and S. scabiei were remarkably lower than other soil amendments at 2.5, 5, and 10 g/L concentrations of lime nitrogen using Glucose Yeast Malt (GYM) medium. In conclusion, this study suggests that potassium sulfate application in low pH soil (less than pH 5) and lime nitrogen application in relatively higher pH soil (more than pH 6) before potato seeding might be helpful to reduce the occurrence of potato scab.

  • We studied about the changes of Allylisothiocyanate (allyINCS) content in rhizome by growth period or season and the effect of foliar application of fertilizer on allylNCS content in Wasabia japonica. AllylNCS content in rhizome of Wasabia japonica was changed according to growth period or season and it was decreased suddenly in May, the last stage of flowering. Foliar application of 1 % urea increased rhizome weight, but had no effect on allylNCS content in rhizome. Total three times foliar applications of 1 % potassium sulfate from Feb. to April increased rhizome weight by 44% and allylNCS content by 38% compared with control and potassium sulfate was more effective than ammonium sulfate. Even though the use of 1 % urea and 1 % ammonium sulfate caused growth disorder due to high concentration, rhizome weight was similar to the control and allylNCS content of rhizome increased by 47% more than control.

  • Porous mineral coating have been fabricated and applied for basic research on their slow release action to a fertilizer. Feldspar was selected as raw mineral for the coating and two different particle sizes of powder were prepared. Slow-release action was estimated by using a potassium sulfate fertilizer. Spherical pellets were prepared with a pan-type pelletizer and then screened into sizes ranging 1.4 to 2.35mm. While the fertilizer pellets were rotated in the pelletizer again, the feldspar powder and 0.5% polyvinyl alcohol solution were simultaneously sprayed on the pellets. The fertilizer pellets coated with feldspar powder were fabricated. The pellets were heated to increase their strength and screened to sort by coating thickness. Potassium releasing tests were conducted for 40 days and the performance for slow-release action was estimated as functions of the heating temperature, coating thickness and raw mineral powder size. The Burst effect caused high initial releasing rate. Releasing kinetics was proportional to concentration of potassium in pellets. The pellet that was fabricated with $27.4{\mu}m$-sized feldspar and heated at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed a releasing rate of 43% on the 40th day.
