  • The consecutive combination process of a biological process as the pre-treatment and a chemical process as the post-treatment is applied for the dyeing wastewater. The poor efficiency of biological treatment using pure oxygen makes the chemical treatment cost high. It is necessary to improve the efficiency of biological treatment in order to reduce the cost of chemical treatment. The purpose of this paper is to find the minimum dose of chemical reagent to fit the Discharged Water Quality Standards for the different biological treatment effluents. Results revealed that the minimum dosage of Fenton's reagent lead to save the cost of chemical treatment based on the guideline dose in the treatment plant. The possible maximum saving reagents was up to $70\%$ for the effluent of the pilot plant packed with the carrier imbedded microorganisms which were selected from the present treatment plant.

  • Effect of ethanol (ASE) and water (ASW) extracts of Argyreia speciosa on blood glucose and lipid profile was investigated in normoglycemic and Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic animals. In oral glucose and sucrose tolerance test, treatment with ASE and ASW (100 and 200 mg/kg) and Glidenclamide (10 mg/kg) significantly improved the glucose and sucrose tolerance in normal animals. In addition, respective treatment for fifteen-day resulted in significant percentage reduction in serum glucose (SG) ie., 30.39% (lower dose of ASE) and 33.21% (higher dose of ASW). In standardized STZ (50 mg/kg, iv)-induced diabetic rats, a single dose of ASE and ASW treatment exhibited reduction in SG levels at different time intervals compared to basal levels. Administration of both the doses of ASE and ASW for fifteen-day days exhibited greater percentage reduction in glycemia (24.6%, 24.7%, 23.9% and 21.9% respectively) and also ameliorated restored to near normal value of all tested lipid parameters. Further, treatment also exhibited significantly improved glucose tolerance over the period of 120 min compared to diabetic control group. Eventhough treatment failed to increase serum insulin levels significantly but peripheral utilization of insulin was increased as evident by insulin tolerance test. Taken together, present study supports the traditional usage of title plant in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

  • Prediction models for post-chlorination require complicated information of reaction time, chlorine dosage considering flow rate as well as environmental conditions such as turbidity, temperature and pH. In order to operate post-chlorination process effectively, the correlations between inlet and outlet of clear well were investigated to develop prediction models of chlorine dosages in post-chlorination process. Correlations of environmental conditions including turbidity and chlorine dosage were investigated to predict residual chlorine at the outlet of clear well. A linear regression model and autoregressive model were developed to apply for the post-chlorination which take place time delay due to detention in clear well tank. The results from autoregressive model show the correlationship of 0.915~0.995. Consequently, the autoregressive model developed in this study would be applicable for real time control for post chlorination process. As a result, the autoregressive model for post chlorination which take place time delay and have multi parameters to control system would contribute to water treatment automation system by applying the process control algorithm.

  • Reproduction of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines Ichinohe on the susceptible soybean cultivar, Lee 74, was significantly reduced by pre-, post- and simultaneous treatments of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, aspirin). The control efficiencies were 60%, 64% and 87% for pre-, post- and simultaneous treatments, respectively. ASA had no significant effect on the survival of 2nd stage juveniles and their penetration into the soybean root tissues, but significantly inhibited the early stage nematode growth in the roots. Syncytia were formed 2∼3 days after inoculation in the susceptible soybean without ASA treatment, characterized by dense cytoplasm and increased cellular organelles such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The nematode stylet was penetrated into the syncytial cell, and feeding tube was formed at the nematode stylet was penetrated into the syncytial cell, and feeding tube was formed at the nematode stylet entry. However, in the ASA treatments, syncytium was not formed or degenerated, depending on the root tissues. In the pre-treatments of ASA, nematode stylets did not penetrate into cells, showing callose-like cell wall thickening formed at the nematode probing sites, or retracted from the infected cells. The stylet penetration sites of syncytial cells appeared to be sealed off with fibrillar materials. With post-treatment of ASA, syncytia formed by the nematode were degenerated, characterized by degradation of syncytial cytoplasm.

  • The proprietary post-combustion CO2 solvent (KoSol) developed by the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) was applied at the Shanghai Shidongkou CO2 Capture Pilot Plant (China Huaneng CERI, capacity: 120,000 ton CO2/yr) of the China Huaneng Group (CHNG) for performance evaluation. The key results of the pilot test and data on the South Korean/Chinese electric power market were used to calculate the predicted cost of CO2 avoided upon deployment of CO2 capture technology in commercial-scale coal-fired power plants. Sensitivity analysis was performed for the key factors. It is estimated that, in the case of South Korea, the calculated cost of CO2 avoided for an 960 MW ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant is approximately 35~44 USD/tCO2 (excluding CO2 transportation and storage costs). Conversely, applying the same technology to a 1,000 MW USC coal-fired power plant in Shanghai, China, results in a slightly lower cost (32~42 USD/tCO2). This study confirms the importance of international cooperation that takes into consideration the geographical locations and the performance of CO2 capture technology for the involved countries in the process of advancing the economic efficiency of large-scale CCS technology aimed to reduce greenhouse gases

  • This study was carried out to examine effect of post-chlorine dosage reduction by ozonation and GAC process in the field plant for 3years in the "G" water purification plant in Seoul. And it is to compare GAC with BAC process in removal effects of TOC, THMs, THMFP, $UV_{254}$. As a result, chlorine dosage of ozonation and GAC(=BAC) is less demand than GAC. Seasonal reduction of chlorine demand is from about 37% to 59% with BAC, and from 24 to 46% with GAC. Higher reduction in BAC could be achieved. The efficiency of chlorine demand reduction with ozonation was depending on the organic carbon removal. $UV_{254}$ concentration is less about 0.13~0.74L/mg.m in BAC than GAC. Therefore, the combination of ozonation and GAC was more effective in reducing post-chlorine than the single GAC. TOC was also monitored, and results show that a linear relationship between TOC and chlorine demand is appropriate under each treatment process. It means that removal of organic matter(TOC) from finished water is necessary to reduce post-chlorine dosage in clear well and to minimize order of chlorine in distribution systems.

  • This study examined the influence of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions on corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tube. Due to the high cooling rate of laser welding, the phase fraction of ferrite and austenite in the weld metal became unbalanced significantly. In addition, the Cr2N particles were precipitated adjacent to the fusion line, which can be susceptible to the localized corrosion. On the other hand, the phase fraction in the weld metal was restored at a ratio of 5:5 when exposed to temperatures above 1060 ℃ during the post weld heat treatment. Nevertheless, the high beltline speed during the PWHT, leading to the insufficient cooling rate, caused a precipitation of σ phase at the interface between ferrite/austenite in both weld metal and base metal. This resulted in the severe corrosion damages and significant decrease in critical pitting temperature (CPT), which was even lower than that measured in as-welded condition. Moreover, the fraction of σ phase in the center region of post weld heat treated steel tube was obtained to be higher than in the surface region. These results suggest that the PWHT conditions for the steel tube should be optimized to ensure the high corrosion resistance by excluding the precipitation of σ phase even in center region.

  • Bacillus subtilis S1-0210 was selected as a biological agent against Botrytis cinerea in strawberry. The isolate inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea in vitro tests. A wettable powder formulation of B. subtilis S1-0210 significantly reduced infection rates with lower than 5%, compared with higher than 70% of infection rates in untreated control. The formulation showed 85 to 89% control efficacies of gray mold incidences on fruits of strawberry in pots. Pre-treatment of the agent was more effective in controlling gray mold on fruits and leaves than post-treatment at the early stage of disease development. The formulation also showed 70% control efficacy of gray mold incidence on fruits of strawberry in a field trial. The results indicate that B. subtilis S1-0210 in the wettable powder formulation may be a potential biocontrol agent to control gray mold on strawberry.
