  • In this paper, we investigated the anomalous hump in the bottom gate staggered a-IGZO TFTs. During the positive bias stress, a positive threshold voltage shift was observed in the transfer curve and an anomalous hump occurred as the stress time increased. The hump became more serious in higher gate bias stress while it was not observed under the negative bias stress. The analysis of constant gate bias stress indicated that the anomalous hump was influenced by the migration of positively charged mobile interstitial zinc ion towards the top side of the a-IGZO channel layer.

  • In this study, a convenient method for the selective immobilization of single strand DNA (ssDNA) on a polymer surface was described. A positively charged polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), was spin-coated on a tissue culture petridish and the micropatterns of the PDDA were formed by selective ion implantation through a pattern mask. The surface property of the implanted PDDA was investigated by using a surface profiler and FT-IR spectrometer. Cy3-labeled ssDNA was selectively immobilized on the PDDA patterns through ionic interaction and thus, well-defined ssDNA patterns were obtained.

  • Aqueous 6-hydroxyquinoline in the first excited singlet state undergoes protonation to the imine group first in 15 ps, then in the time scale of 40 ps deprotonation from the enol group and finally, however, quickly as in 11 ps electron rearrangement to change into a resonance hybrid structure of quinoid-prevailing forms. Despite the fact that the decay time constant is smaller than the formation time constant, fluorescence from excited protropic zwitterion is observed to assign its maximum at 510 nm. The electron rearrangement is basically an intramolecular charge transfer from the deprotonated oxygen atom to the positively charged iminium ring without any notable change in nuclear geometry, producing a zwitterionic quinoid structure with much a smaller electric dipole moment than the zwitterionic protropic species. This photoproduct formed by consecutive excited state proton and electron transfers shows a smaller dipole moment in S1 than in S0 and a hypsochromic shift although its S1 state has (π, π*) character.

  • For the recycle of coal fly ash generated from power stations, we developed an electrocyclone system which can separate unburned carbon form coal fly ash, based on the fact that coarse fly ash particles contain higher amount of unburned carbon and unburned carbon particles are charged positively, and pure ash particles are charged negatively on contacting each other. Additionally, guide vanes were installed in the cyclone to control the cut size. Two types of electrode, stick and grid type, were designed to investigate the effect of electrode type. Results show that by introducing an electric field inside the cyclone, the yield increases by 5 to 15e1o. But the content of unburned carbon in the clean ash does not change significantly.

  • Tolaasin, a peptide toxin produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii, causes a serious disease on the cultivated mushrooms, known as brown blotch disease. Hemolysis using red blood cells was designed to measure the cytotoxicity of tolaasin molecules. Since tolaasin has two amine groups near the C-terminus, its membrane binding will be dependent on the ionic states of the amine groups. When the tolaasin peptide was titrated, its titration curve indicated the presence of titratable amine(s) at pH ranges from 7.0 to 9.6. When the pH-dependence of tolaasin-induced hemolysis was measured at various pHs, hemolysis was more efficient at alkaline pHs. In order to measure the membrane binding activity of tolaasin at different pHs, RBCs were incubated with tolaasin molecules for short time periods and washed out with fresh buffer. Because of the tolaasin binding during the preincubation period, fast hemolyses were observed at pH 8 or higher. These results imply that non-charged or less positively charged states of tolaasin molecules easily bind to membrane and show high hemolytic activity.

  • We used the discrete-sectional model to analyze the particle growth by coagulation of particles in silane plasma reactor, considering the Gaussian distribution function for particle charges. The effects of process conditions such as monomer size and mass generation rate of monomers on particle growth in plasma reactor were analyzed theoretically/ Based on the Gaussian distribution function of particle charges, the large particles of more than 40 nm in size are almost found to be charged negatively, but some fractions of small, tiny particles are in neutral state or even charged positively. As the particle size and surface area increase with time by particle coagulation, the number of charges per particle increases with time. As the large particles are generated by particle coagulation, the particle size distribution become bimodal. The results of discrete-sectional model for the particle growth in silane plasma reactor were in close agreement with the experimental results by Shiratani et al. [3] for the same plasma conditions. We believe the model equations for the particle charge distribution and coagulation between particles can be applied to understand the nano-sized particle growth in plasma reactor.

  • Papiliocin, isolated from the swallowtail butterfly (Papilio xuthus), is an antimicrobial peptide with high selectivity against gram-negative bacteria. We previously showed that the N-terminal helix of papiliocin (PapN) plays a key role in the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of papiliocin. In this study, we measured the selectivity of PapN against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, as well as its anti-inflammatory activity. Interactions between Trp2 of PapN and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is a major component of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, were studied using the Trp fluorescence blue shift and quenching in LPS micelles. Furthermore, using circular dichroism, we investigated the interactions between PapN and LPS, showing that LPS plays critical roles in peptide folding. Our results demonstrated that Trp2 in PapN was buried deep in the negatively charged LPS, and Trp2 induced the ${\alpha}$-helical structure of PapN. Importantly, docking studies determined that predominant electrostatic interactions of positively charged arginine residues in PapN with phosphate head groups of LPS were key factors for binding. Similarly, hydrophobic interactions by aromatic residues of PapN with fatty acid chains in LPS were also significant for binding. These results may facilitate the development of peptide antibiotics with anti-inflammatory activity.

  • Microencapsulation of acyclovir, an effective antiviral agent which acts as a specific inhibitor of herpes DNA polymerase, by carbopol-gelatin complex coacervation has been carried out to develop an oral controlled release preparation, which could improve the absorption characteristics in GI tract. After dissolving carbopol and gelatin separately in distilled water at $40^{\circ}C$, gelatin solution was mixed with carbopol solution while stirring at the same temperature. The pH of the mixture was lowered gradually by dropwise addition of 10% HCI with continuous stirring, and then, at pH 3.5, positively charged gelatin molecules were attracted to negatively charged carbopol. These coacervation processes were observed by optical microscopy during preparation. Plasma concentrations of acyclovir in rats after an oral administration of microcapsule suspension were assayed by HPLC, and pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated based on the model-independent analyses. Two standard formulations, oral solution and intravenous bolus injection, were used as references to compare the bioavailability. It has been revealed that $C_{max}$, $T_{max}$, and MRT of microcapsule suspension were greater than those of oral solution, which results in about two-fold increases in bioavailability. Therefore, in conclusion, the carbopol-gelatin microcapsule of acyclovir might be evaluated as an effective oral controlled release preparation which could increase the bioavailability of acyclovir.

  • Three possible binding modes of cationic meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (TMPyP) to d[(GCATATATGC)2] duplex were investigated by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Among the three binding modes namely, “along the groove”, “across the groove” and “face on the groove”, the “across the groove” model exhibited the largest negative binding free energy and the DNA backbone remained as the B form. In this model, the molecular plain of the TMPyP tilts 45o with respect to the DNA helix axis and is largely exposed to the solvent. TMPyP was stabilized mainly by the interaction between the positively charged neighboring pyridinium moieties of TMPyP and negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA. The result obtained in this work by MD and the report (Jin, B. et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 2417.) that the spectral properties of poly[d(A-T)2] bound TMPyP in the presence and absence of the minor groove binding drug 4',6- diamidino-2-phenylindole are similar, we propose that TMPyP bind across the minor groove of the AT rich- DNA.

  • We report a novel method to synthesize nanocomposites composed of titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions with various composition ratios ranging from W/Ti = 12/10 to 12/500 by inducing the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged protonated titania sol-particles and the negatively charged phosphotungstate anions to flocculate and precipitate. The precipitates showed varied features depending on the composition. The precipitate from the tungsten-richest W/Ti = 12/10 reaction is amorphous in its powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy data. This material shows the Type II adsorption characteristics in its N2-adsorption isotherm, but with quite low surface area of 34 m2/g. To the contrary, the precipitates from the titanium-richer reactions (W/Ti = 12/50- 12/500) are composed of anatase nanoparticles of 2-6 nm by XRD, TEM and Raman and show the Type I adsorption characteristics. The surface area linearly increases with the titanium content from 131 m2/g for W/ Ti = 12/50 to 228 m2/g for 12/500. The precipitate from the reaction with the intermediate composition W/Ti = 12/20 is composed of anatase nanoparticles and does not have any pore accessible to N2. With the wide variety of the physical properties of the precipitates, the present method can be a novel, viable means to tailor synthesis of nanocomposite materials. A formation mechanism of the precipitates is based on the electrostatic interactions between the titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions.
