A Study on Enhancement of the Position Accuracy of a Linear Motor (리니어 모터의 위치 정밀도 향상에 관한 연구)

  • There are various sources causing a position error in a linear motor. This paper focuses on error sources from rotational motions of a table and friction. Rotational errors occur due to imperfections during manufacturing and/or assembly of guide ways, and cause a position error at locations of interest. Friction is another factor deteriorating the position error due to its highly nonlinear behavior. The position error of the linear motor was about 20∼30$\mu\textrm{m}$. After compensating the position errors due to rotational error motions and friction. the remaining errors become about 6~8$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2~3$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. It is shown that the positional accuracy of a linear can be greatly improved by compensating the two error sources.

The identification of Korean vowels /o/ and /u/ by native English speakers

  • The Korean high back vowels /o/ and /u/ have been reported to be in a state of near-merger especially among young female speakers. Along with cross-generational changes, the vowel position within a word has been reported to render different phonetic realization. The current study examines native English speakers' ability to attend to the phonetic cues that distinguish the two merging vowels and the positional effects (word-initial vs. word-final) on the identification accuracy. 28 two-syllable words containing /o/ or /u/ in either initial or final position were produced by native female Korean speakers. The CV part of each target word were excised and presented to six native English speakers. The results showed that although the identification accuracy was the lowest for /o/ in word- final position (41%), it increased up to 80% in word-initial position. The acoustic analyses of the target vowels showed that /o/ and /u/ were differentiated on the height dimension only in word-initial position, suggesting that English speakers may have perceived the distinctive F1 difference retained in the prominent position.

Accuracy of the Position Fix and the Propagational Characteristic of Omega Radio Wave at Busan (부산지방에서의 오메가전파의 전파특성과 측정위치의 정도에 관하여)

  • Accuracy of the position fix obtained by navigation with Omega in the capacity of worldwide navigation depends on the predicted propagation correction. The authors observe continuously the phase differences of the A-C pair and the A-E pair from April 17 to October 14, 1980, at Busan(35\ulcorner07'. 9N, 129\ulcorner06'. 3E), and analyze the characteristic of daily variation the relation between the theoretical PPC and the measu red PPC to study the accuracy of the position fix. The results are as follows: 1. The results of fourier's analysis for the theoretical PPC and the measured PPC are positive correlation in the coefficients ao, a2, a3 with A-C pair and in the coefficients aO-a3 with A-E pair, and those PPC are apparent to daily periodicity during all measured time. The initial phase is around to 280\ulcorner with A-C pair and 1800 with A-E pair. 2. Daily variatons of the phase difference tend to decrease and the time width to narrow from April toward July, but these variations are opposed to those from July toward October. 3. Mean value of total errors of the position fix by theoretical PPC is 2.67 miles and its standard deviationis O.90miles. 4. Mean value of total errors of the position fix by the measured PPC is 0.63 miles and its standard deviation is 0.217 miles.

Event Detection on Motion Activities Using a Dynamic Grid

  • Event detection based on using features from a static grid can give poor results from the viewpoint of two main aspects: the position of the camera and the position of the event that is occurring in the scene. The former causes problems when training and test events are at different distances from the camera to the actual position of the event. The latter can be a source of problems when training events take place in any position in the scene, and the test events take place in a position different from the training events. Both issues degrade the accuracy of the static grid method. Therefore, this work proposes a method called a dynamic grid for event detection, which can tackle both aspects of the problem. In our experiment, we used the dynamic grid method to detect four types of event patterns: implosion, explosion, two-way, and one-way using a Multimedia Analysis and Discovery (MAD) pedestrian dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect the four types of event patterns with high accuracy. Additionally, the performance of the proposed method is better than the static grid method and the proposed method achieves higher accuracy than the previous method regarding the aforementioned aspects.

Animal Tracking System Using the Doppler Effect for Single LEO Satellite (도플러 효과를 이용한 단일 저궤도위성의 동물추적시스템 개발)

  • Position determination accuracy is strongly depending on how much precisely and frequently satellite receiver measures transmitted signals from terminals on target animals when Doppler effect is applied for position determination. ARGOS satellite system has shown relatively high position determination accuracy by operating multiple satellites, which enable operator to get more Doppler shift data from terminals. In case of animal tracking mission with single satellite, however, it is difficult for the satellite receiver to receive transmitted signals from terminals frequently during short period that satellite passes over ground terminals. This is one of the main sources to decrease position accuracy on target animals. In this paper, the Doppler rate estimation is implemented to increase the number of Doppler shift data received by single satellite. It is proved that the relatively high position determination accuracy with increased number of estimated data can be obtained. We also suggest that the Doppler rate estimation is applicable for position determination system with single satellite.

A Study of English Consonants Identified by College Students (대학생들의 영어자음 인지 연구)

  • Previous studies have shown that Korean students have difficulty identifying some English consonants which are not in the Korean sound inventory. The aim of this study was to examine the accuracy rate of English consonants correctly identified by 130 college students in order to find out which English consonants were difficult for the students to perceive. The subject's task was to identify one of the minimal pairs played in a quiet laboratory classroom. 100 minimal pairs consisted of syllables with various onsets or codas: stops, fricatives, affricates, liquids and nasals. Results were as follows: First, the average score of the English major group was significantly higher than that of the non-English major group. Second, there was a similar distribution in the rank order of minimal pairs sorted by the accuracy rate between the two groups. Third, the accuracy rate systematically decreased as each score range decreased. Fourth, the students showed higher accuracy in the perception of liquids than that of the stop-fricative contrast. Fifth, the accuracy score in onset position was higher than in coda position. Finally, the students still had problem telling voiced consonants from voiceless ones, especially in coda position. It would be desirable to extend the present research to middle or high school students to fundamentally resolve those listening problems.

  • The reliability and accuracy of the information on control rod position are very important to the reactor safety and the design of the core protection system. A survey on the RSPT(Reed Switch Position Transmitter) type control rod position indicator system and its actual implementation in the existing nuclear power plants in Korea was performed first. The control rod position indicator having the high performance for SMART was developed on the basis of RSPT technology identified through the survey. The arrangement of permanent magnet and reed switches is the most important procedure in the design of control rod position indicator. The hysteresis of reed switches is one of the important factors in a repeat accuracy of control rod position indicator as well. This paper investigates efficiency of the magnetic flux concentrator and the hysteresis using FEM and verified differences in physicals characteristics by comparing the results of FEM and those of the experiment. As a result, it is shown that the characteristics of prototype control rod position indicator have a good agreement with the results of FEM.

  • Absolute position sensors are widely used in machine tools and precision measuring instruments because measurement errors are not accumulated, and position measurements can be performed without initialization. The laser speckle-based absolute position sensor, in particular, has advantages in terms of simple system configuration and high measurement accuracy. Unlike traditional absolute position sensors, it does not require an expensive physical length scale; instead, it uses a laser speckle image database to measure a moving surface position. However, there is a problem that a huge database is required to store information in all positions on the surface. Conversely, reducing the size of the database also decreases the accuracy of position measurements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method to measure the surface position with high precision while reducing the size of the database. We use image stitching and approximation methods to reduce database size and speed up measurements. The absolute position error of the proposed method was about 0.27 ± 0.18 ㎛, and the average measurement time was 25 ms.

Improvement of the Accuracy of Short Baseline Acoustic Positioning System (단기선 (SBL) 음향위치 시스템의 정도 개선)

  • Underwater acoustic positioning systems have been extensively used not only in surface position fixing but also in underwater position fixing. Recently, these systems have been applied in the field of installation and underwater inspection offshore platforms etc. But in these systems are included the fixing errors as results of a signal with noise and irregular motion of vessel by ocean waves. In this paper to improve the accuracy of the position fixing a Kalman filter is applied to the short baseline(SBL) acoustic positioning system. The optimal position obtained by the Kalman filter is compared with the raw position and it is confirmed that the former is more accurate than the latter.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm to determine the receiver position in satellite navigation for GPS(Global Positioning System). The algorithm which based on vector analysis is able to obtain simultaneously the receiver position and the direction vector which is from the receiver position to a satellite. In its first calculation stage it, does riot require the complex initial value which is used in the previous works and affects the accuracy of the observed receiver position. Furthermore, the algorithm tells us whether a selected configuration among the visible satellites is good or poor for the accuracy. Comparing the algorithm with the previous method, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified through the experimental simulations.
