미래병사체계를 위한 휴대형 연료전지 기술개발 동향 및 발전방안 (R&D Trends and Technology Development Plan on Portable Fuel Cell for Future Soldier System)

  • 병사용 휴대형 전원은 전투원의 작전 수행 능력을 해치지 않는 범위의 휴대 하중을 지님과 동시에 전투장비의 소비전력에 대응하는 전기에너지를 공급할 수 있어야 한다. 특히 미래병사체계의 경우 전투장비의 고성능화에 따라 장비의 총 요구전력이 증가하고 있으므로 경량 고효율 특성을 가지는 휴대형 전원 개발이 필수적이다. 연료전지는 군용 전원으로 주로 적용되던 종래의 리튬 전지에 비해 중량 대비 에너지밀도가 높아 경량 소형화가 가능하여 휴대형 전원 시스템으로 활발한 연구개발이 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 휴대형 전원으로 적용되는 연료전지의 특성을 살펴보고, 국내·외 군용 휴대형 연료전지 개발 현황을 조사한 후, 국외 선진 기술국의 개발 수준 대비 국내 기술 현황에 대해 분석한다. 또한, 미래병사체계용 전원으로의 적용을 위한 휴대형 연료전지 개발 시 고려해야할 주요 요소를 전력 공급 안정성, 휴대 용이성, 비용 절감 세 가지로 분류하고, 이와 관련된 기술을 중심으로 발전방안을 제시하여 향후 연료전지 기반 개인병사 체계용 휴대형 전원 기술 발전방안 수립 시 활용할 수 있도록 한다.

  • Due to the increasing intelligence, the increasing connectivity, and always-on characteristics energy needs for the portable electronics cannot be managed by the state-of-art battery technology. Micro fuel cell fuelled by aqueous methanol is gaining lots of interest from the new energy storage developers since it has the potential to offer the longer operation time to the portable electronic devices. Although the technical barriers to the commercialization exit, it is expected that the micro fuel cell technology bring huge benefits to the current energy storage market once it matures. In the article, benefits, challenges and market players of the direct methanol fuel cell arena is briefly reviewed.

이동전원용 직접 붕소 연료전지 개발 (Development of the Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell for Portable Power Source)

  • The fuel cells for portable application are attracted using a liquid fuel such as methanol and chemical hydride solutions. Recently, DBFC [Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell] is a candidate for power of portable electronic devices. In this work, the anion exchange membrane and non-precious catalyst for the DBFC were concerned. Anion-exchange membrane was fabricated by amination of polysulfone followed chloromethylation. Non-precious catalysts such as raney-Ni and Ag were used as an anode and cathode catalyst. The optimum conditions of catalyst slurry mixing and MEA fabrication were developed. The single cell performance using anion exchange membrane and non-precious catalyst was evaluated and the results were compared with cation exchange membrane [Nafion membrane] and precious catalysts.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Hydrazine in Membraneless Fuel Cells

  • This paper describes the continuous flow operation of membraneless sodium perborate fuel cell using acid/alkaline bipolar electrolyte. Here, hydrazine is used as a fuel and sodium perborate is used as an oxidant under Alkaline-acid media configuration. Sodium perborate affords hydrogen peroxide in aqueous medium. In our operation, the laminar flow based microfluidic membranleless fuel cell achieved a maximum power density of $27.2mW\;cm^{-2}$ when using alkaline hydrazine as the anolyte and acidic perborate as the catholyte at room temperature with a fuel mixture flow rate of $0.3mL\;min^{-1}$. The simple planar structured membraneless sodium perborate fuel cell enables high design flexibility and easy integration of the microscale fuel cell into actual microfluidic systems and portable power applications.

  • Recently by the development of the electronic engineering technology various mobile devices are developed. But their operation time need to be extended although capacity of the batteries are limited. We focused our attention to the portable SOFC system. Because SOFC has the high efficiency and a lot of strongness in comparison with other kinds of fuel cells. In addition they can be built as a self/non-reformable system and single/dual chamber system. So We evaluated some types of SOFC theoretically, and compared the results from the fuel and performance efficiency point of view.

  • 상온$\cdot$상압에서 운전되는 휴대전원용 연료전지 시스템에서 연료에 따른 애노드와 캐소드의 전위특성과 알코올 크로스오버의 영향 및 운전에 적합한 알코올 연료의 농도를 확인한 결과, 고분자 전해질 막을 통한 액상연료의 크로스오버는 메탄올, 에탄올, 그리고 이소프로필 알코올 모두에서 발생하였고, 고정형 연료시스템을 적용한 단위전지의 성능은 4.5 M의 메탄올이 0.23V에서 $31mW/cm^2$로 가장 우수하였다.

  • DAFC(direct alcohol fuel cell) takes the same structure and operational principle with PEMFC(Proton exchange membrane fuel cell). However, DAFC, which uses liquid alcohol instead of hydrogen as fuel, is able to be used as a portable power for small-scaled electronic devices such as MP3, PMP, and mobile phone because alcohol is quite convenient steady-state compound to carry and store it. This paper presents the OCV(open circuit voltage) characteristics of the cases which are alcohol species and different weight rate of ethanol, respectively. The OCV of methanol fuel cell is slightly higher 0.2V than ethanol one, and 8% wt. rate ethanol is rated as the most appropriate fuel for DAFC.

  • Existing energy sources convert chemical energy into mechanical energy, while fuel cell directly generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Therefore, it has a lot of strong points such as high efficiency, zero emission, and etc. In addition, with the development of hydrogen preservation technique, some companies have been researching and releasing portable fuel cell power packs for specific applications like military equipment, automobile, and so on. However, there are some drawbacks to the fuel cell, high cost and slow dynamic response. In order to compensate these weak points, auxiliary energy storages could be applied to the fuel cell system. In this paper, the optimum structure for a 150W portable fuel cell power pack with a battery pack is selected considering the specification of the system, and the design process of main parts is described in detail. Here, main objectives are compact size, simple control, high efficiency, and low cost. Then, an automatic mode change algorithm, which converts the operating mode depending on the states of fuel cell stack, battery pack, and load, is introduced. Finally, performance of the designed prototype using the automatic mode change control is verified through experiments.

  • Fuel cells is proved that potential energy is greater than the existing power generation. In this paper, we describe a principle of fuel cell which is used for next generation portable battery and brief characteristic of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) that used for portable appliances by miniaturization of polymer electrolyte fuel cell. Lastly we describe about research investment for fuel cells.
