  • This study addresses the unique nature of port security services, which encompass a blend of both public and private components, distinguishing it from conventional police services exclusively focused on public welfare. The primary objective of port security is to thwart potential terrorist threats and address criminal activities within the port environment. The services offered include security screening for personnel and vehicles, assistance for port entrants and exit procedures, pass issuance, and guidance for port users arriving by vehicle. Despite the critical role played by port security, there is a notable absence of prior research assessing customer responses to these services. This study aims to fill this gap by defining port security services based on existing research, identifying the factors influencing the quality of port security services, and proposing recommendations for enhancing overall port security operations.

  • As national economies globalize, demand for intercontinental container shipping services is growing rapidly, providing a potential economic boon for the countries and communities that provide port services. On the promise of profits, many governments are investing heavily in port infrastructure, leading to a possible glut in port capacity, driving down prices for port services and eliminating profits as ports compete for business. Further, existing ports are making strategic investments to protect their market share, increasing the chance new ports will be overcapitalized and unprofitable. Governments and port researchers need a tool for understanding how local competition in their region will affect demand for port services at their location, and thus better assess the profitability of a prospective port. We propose to develop such a tool by extending our existing simulation model of global container traffic to incorporate demand-side shipper preferences and supply-side strategic responses by incumbent ports to changes in the global port network, including building new ports, scaling up existing ports, and unexpected port closures. We will estimate shipper preferences over routes, port attributes and port services based on US and international shipping data, and redesign the simulation model to maximize the shipper's revealed preference functions rather than simply minimize costs. As demand shifts, competing ports will adjust their pricing (short term) and infrastructure (long term) to remain competitive or defend market share, a reaction we will capture with a game theoretic model of local monopoly that will predict changes in port characteristics. The model's hypotheses will be tested in a controlled laboratory experiment tailored to local port competition in Asia, which will also serve to demonstrate the subtle game theoretic concepts of imperfect competition to a policy and industry audience. We will apply the simulation model to analyze changes in global container traffic in three scenarios: addition of a new large port in the US, extended closure of an existing large port in the US, and cooperative and competitive port infrastructure development among Korean partner countries in Asia.

  • Across many industries, benchmarking is considered useful method to improve their service quality and achieve competitive advantage. Benchmarking, especially, has emerged as an increasingly important approach to improving the performance of logistics system and enables successful logistics services and doing good business in logistics services. There are no, however, literature approach for the relationship between benchmarking and port. It is the highest worth researching the application of benchmarking method on the port, since port is the most important component in supply Chain. Therefore, this paper tries to demonstrate the application of the benchmarking method on the port. To do this study, the literature approach developed by several researchers for logistics benchmarking is used as the basic framework. In addition, the following studies are executed: First, the survey of previous studies on logistics benchmarking. Second, finding the indicator and selecting the target in the port benchmarking. Third, the systematic execution schemes of the port benchmarking. Finally, based on the above studies, this paper provides a background for discussions on the future prospects for the application of the benchmarking method on the port.

  • The port BIM technology has many problems such as lack of relevant system, high cost of BIM infrastructure construction, and process difference of existing domestic inter-industry. Since the port facilities as national key industries are managed and operated by public organizations, it is necessary to integrate IT resources and have a system that needs collective construction and joint utilization management. In this paper, we proposed the convergence of cloud computing technology and BIM as a way to reduce the infrastructure cost required for port BIM operation and to provide various BIM services for domestic process. To do this, we collected system requirements based on demand surveys of port staff and designed a BIM browser that provides IFC-based BIM server and customized services to reduce infrastructure cost in cloud computing environment. In terms of infrastructure, we designed cloud-based IaaS to support cost reduction, which is an essential component, and designed SaaS to support customized services in terms of services. We will perform performance verification with focus on whether port BIM servers and browsers have reached a level where they can manage four BIM models with different types and capacities.

  • This study comprehensively reviews the research conducted until recently in order to derive realistic alternatives in consideration of local industries. The case analysis was performed on a competitive port of similar size, and strategies and revitalization measures were suggested in consideration of the conditions of Gunsan Port. Literature review focused on papers and major reports. The case of similar size were analyzed for Daesan port, Boryeong port, and Mokpo port. In order to find strategies to revitalize the regional port logistics industry behind Gunsan Port, the recent opportunities and threat factors of Gunsan Port were derived. In order to foster the regional port logistics industry with Gunsan Port as its main base, this study proposes a three-step development strategy. It is necessary to increase the effectiveness of the public-private joint port sales and maintain the incentive system, but use it as a means to strengthen the competitiveness of Gunsan Port. Since the possibility of opening various routes is not high due to the conditions of Gunsan Port, various business models can be devised to link the currently opened routes. Start-up in the logistics field can stand out if they provide predictive data or provide consulting services by securing and analyzing logistics data, not directly providing logistics services.

  • The rapid progress of the intermodal freight transportation in recent years has induced fierce competition among the adjacent hub ports for container transport. This brings increased attention to the evaluation of the port competitive ability. But it is not easy to evaluate the port competitive ability because this belongs to ill-defined system which is composed of ambiguous interacting attributes. Paying attention to this point, this paper deals the competitive ability of container port in Far-East Asia by fuzzy integral evaluation which is adequate to interacting ambiguous attribute problem. For this, the proposed fuzzy evaluation algorithm is applied to the real problem, based on the factors such as cargo volumes, costs, services, infrastructure and geographical sites These are extracted from the precedent study of port competitive ability, etc. The results show that the port evaluation factors come in following order ; services, costs, infrastructure, geographical sites and cargo volumes. There are some interactions(interaction coefficient, ${\lambda}=-0.664$ between evaluation attributes. The port competitive ability comes in following order : Singapore, Hongkong, Kobe, Kaoshiung and Busan. According to the sensitivity analysis, the rank between Busan and Kaoshiung changes when ${\lambda}=0.7$. From the analysis of the results, we confirmed that the proposed fuzzy evaluation algorithm is very effective in the complex-fuzzy problem which is composed of hierarchical structure with interacting attributes.

  • This study extracted the major attributes of the competitiveness of services provided by port logistics networks from previous research and interviews with experts and, based on the attributes, analyzed the effects of change in the competitiveness of the Incheon Port. According to the results, services provided by port logistics networks were divided into facility conveniences, access conveniences, and decision conveniences. In the results on the integrated value of the competitiveness of logistics network among ports, competitiveness was high in order of Busan Port>Qigndao Port>Tianjin Port>Dalian Port>Incheon Port. Particularly in the results of scenario analysis, with the elevation of one or two factors of logistics network service, the Incheon Port was even inferior to the Dalian Port, which had the lowest competitiveness among the ports compared. In the results of reversed fuzzy analysis, the Incheon Port could maintain equal competitiveness with the Dalian Port by raising the service level of the logistics network by 25% for facility conveniences, by 8% for access conveniences, and by 1% for decision conveniences.
