Business Process Design to Apply ebXML Framework to the Port and Logistics Distribution Industry (ebXML 적용을 위한 항만물류산업 비즈니스 프로세스 설계)

  • EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) has been widely utilized to support Business Activities since it has such advantages as fast transfer of information, less documentation work, efficient information exchange etc. Recently e-business environment has urged the traditional EDI system to be changed to ebXML framework. To apply the ebXML framework to a certain industry, it is required to implement Business Process (BP), Core Component (CC), Collaboration Protocol Profile (CPP), Collaboration Protocol Agreement (CPA), Messaging system etc. We have selected the port and logistics industry as a target domain to apply ebXML framework, since the EDI usage ratio of it is relatively higher than other industries. In this paper, we have analyzed the current status of EDI system and transaction processes in the port and logistics industry. We have defined the business process that will be registered in the registry/repository, the main component of ebXML framework, using UN/CEFACT modeling methodology. And Business Collaborations, Business Transactions, Business Document Flows, Choreography, Pattern, etc. are represented using UML according to UN/ CEFACT modeling methodology, to apply ebXML Framework to the port and logistics distribution industry. Also we have suggested the meta methodology for applying the ebXML framework to other industries.

A Study on the Operational Improvement at Pusan Container Terminal (부산항 컨테이너 전용 터미널 운영 개선을 위한 연구)

  • In this paper, we compare and analyze the current state of the productivity of the stevedoring work among several container terminals in 1999. Based on these results of analysis, we firstly classify several factors which impede the efficient operations of container terminal as follows ; late arrival of container beyond cargo closing time(CCT), change of port of destination, change of vessel, and return cargo. Such factors are major cause for the cargo rehandling on terminals, thus deteriorate the overall performance of transfer crane during the stevedoring work. In order to improve the productivity of container terminal, we suggest that it is necessary for establishing and operating the efficient logistics management system. Especially, we emphasize the importance of information exchange on the scheduled cargoes among the relevant parties such as shippers, shipping companies, and terminal operators, which is the most effective way to alleviate the cargo rehandling.

  • A thematic land cover map of Pusan port area was developed using Landsat satellite TM(Thematic Mapper) image. Two types of digital data which are road and sea water layer are extracted from existing paper map were overlayed over the developed land cover map. SPIN-2(KNR-1000) image was utilized to make a facility map of JaSungDae port. SPIN-2 image, which has a cell resolution of 1.56 m showed higer accuracy than TM image, which has a cell resolution of 30 m for facility mapping. Overall, the techniques of digital mapping using satellite image are very useful, effective and efficient.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a port simulation program for Inchon Port. The arrival and departure data from Inchon Port are analyzed, several probability density functions for the interval time and service time are estimated, and the berthing rules are constructed based on experts experiences. The port simulation program is written in visual basic considering the interarrival p.d.f., service rate p.d.f., berthing rules, and dual-dock system, and is used to analyze the effects of the changes in ship arrival rate and service rate upon the demurrage. It is expected that we can use the simulation results in order to prepare proper service level and to evaluate the appropriate investment strategy to be planned.

  • Container Vessel is becoming larger and faster thanks to the rapid growth of global trade and development of technology. Therefore, 15,000TEU vessel is expected to be ordered in near future. Every nations in north-east Asia are facing strong competition to be logistics hub to get the initiatives of logistics in response to the rapid change of logistics environment. According to the globalization of economy and major ports in this region also are trying to catch big shipping line for their survival. Considering above circumstances of the advent of ultra-large container vessel and spoke-and-hub strategy, it is inevitably necessary to make a fast and accurate vessel job in the terminal in order to be a leading port To meet this objective, current vessel planning system has to be improved innovatively. Therefore, this thesis propose multi distributed vessel planning system which enables multi loading/discharging planning with several planner simultaneously for faster and more accurate than existing planning and enhances quality of planning through information sharing among planners. Also this thesis uses simulation through Arena to verify the efficiency of this multi-distributed vessel planning system.

  • In the field of network sense for the Ubiquitous environment, the technology of RFID is a significant part. Due to the real time processing of information and the property of network, RFID has been used in service field such as distribution, administrative control of physical distribution, remote measuring device, and security, instead of currently used bar-code. The management system of port facilities using the current RFID technology has the effects of reducing working hours and improvement in data processing, but it is not proper for human resource allocation since it is dominantly worked for physical resources. In this paper, we designed and implemented personnel control system using RFID of 2.4GHz in port facilities which presents a monitoring system for safety operation and increase of efficiency using RFID in order to overcome the limitations and problems of current port operation management techniques.

  • This case study for a homeshopping company shows that the management of returned apparels by the partnership system increases the velocity of the returned goods, which not only minimizes the products' value loss but also improves the company's management performance. By incorporating the partnership system, following significant performance improvements have been identified: First, decrease in transaction cost and time between the homeshopping company and the partnering companies. Second, concentration of production line, accurate schedule management of receipt/delivery as well as collection of goods. Third, improvement of efficiency in procedures of returned goods and quality improvement of product provided by the partner.

  • This paper is the empirical study results on the introduction effects of safety management system(SMS) for the shipping company. First of all, we take a brief look at the present Korean situations after the SMS induction Next, we analyse the effect of the SMS induction. We divided the effect of induction in 21 factors. The result was 3.5 out of 5 perfect points, which shows the high preference. Higher points were scored with international companies than domestic ones, the companies accepted before 1998 than the ones after 1998, and large enterprises than smaller ones.

Development of a Wave Absorbing System Using a Liquefied Sandbed

  • A new wave-absorbing system, called the liquefied sandbed wave barrier (LSWB) system, is currently under development at the Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI) of Japan. The wave damping effect by the LSWB system is substantial, as confirmed by small-scale experiments and FEM numerical calculations, i.e., the wave transmission coefficient of the system is less than 0.2. Here, the results of large-scale experiments arediscussed in view of practical application. Although the LSWB system provides high wave damping, nearly equal to theoretical values, difficulty exists in obtaining a homogeneously liquefied sandbed, due to the occurrence of liquefied sandbed compaction by cyclic wave loading, which in turn, reduces excess pare pressure and the wave damping effect. These two phenomena primarily occur when the sandbed is composed of fine sand with small permeability. Based on experimental results, we propose a design method that includes countermeasures against such problems, and a prototype LSWB system is constructed in a very large wave flume at PARI. Wave damping by the prototype LSWB system is confirmed to be quite stable and high, as predicted by theoretical calculations.

  • The objective of this paper is to quickly examine the prosperity of a marine transportation system ana port development in the Han river Estuary and Yellow Sea border areas and to establish a cooperative management plan for the development of marine transportation and port service for cargo transportation in Seoul. as well as between South Korea and North Korea. Specifically. a development plan with a sincere effort to preserve the environment surrounding Marine Peace Park. The intent is to prove that prosperity is possible through the development of marine transportation and port service.
