Syngas/Diesel Dual Fuel Combustion in a Compression Ignition Engine with Different Composition Ratios of Syngas and Compression Ratios (합성가스/디젤 혼소압축착화 엔진의 합성가스 혼합비와 압축비에 따른 연소 및 배출가스 특성)

  • Syngas is widely produced by incomplete combustion of coal, water vapor, and air (oxygen) in a high-temperature/high-pressure gasifier through a coal-gasification process for power generation. In this study, a simulation syngas which was mainly composed of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $N_2$ was fueled with diesel. A modified single cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine is equipped with intake port syngas supply system and mechanical diesel direct injection system for dual fuel combustion. Combustion and emission characteristics of the engine were investigated by applying various syngas composition ratios and compression ratios. Diesel fuel injection timing was optimized to increase indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) at the engine speed 1,800 rpm and part load net indicated mean effective pressure ($IMEP_{net}$) 2 to 5 bar. ITE of the engine increased with the $H_2$ concentration, compression ratio and engine load. With 45% of $H_2$ concentration, compression ratio 17.1 and $IMEP_{net}$ 5 bar, ITE of 41.5% was achieved, which is equivalent to that of only diesel fuel operation.

A Highly Linear Self Oscillating Mixer Using Second Harmonic Injection (2차 고조파 주입을 사용한 고 선형성의 자체 발진 혼합기)

  • In this paper, a highly linear self oscillating mixers(SOM) using second harmonic injections are presented. The H-slot defected ground structure(DGS) is designed as a balanced resonator for oscillation in the proposed SOM. Since the H-slot DGS resonator achieves a high Q factor, it is a suitable structure to provide low phase noise for the oscillator. The single balanced mixer is utilized in this work and it provides good LO-RF isolation since balanced LO signals are suppressed at the RF input port. In order to inject the second harmonic of the IF, we propose two different methods using feedback loops. In the first method, IF achieves a 3.08 dB conversion gain at 226 MHz with input power of -20 dBm at 5 GHz RF input signal. The IF achieves 2 dB conversion gain at 423 MHz with the input power of -20 dBm at 5.2 GHz RF input signal in the second method. The measured IMD3s are 61.8 dB and 65 dB for the each method. These SOMs present improved linearity compared to that without the second harmonic injection because IMD3s are improved by 18. dB and 21 dB for each method.

Review on the Process Safety of $SiH_{4}$ Gas used in Semiconductor and FPD Field (반도체 및 FPD 분야에 사용되는 $SiH_{4}$ 가스의 공정 안전 고찰)

  • When the vacuum system for the process of $SiH_{4}$ gas used in the semiconductor and FPD field is partially vented from vacuum to atmospheric state, a fire often occurs due to auto-ignition of $SiH_{4}$ gas. In order to prevent the fire, the concentration of $SiH_{4}$ should be kept under LFL. This means that the higher capacity pump is needed to meet the process conditions as well as the condition that the concentration of $SiH_{4}$ should be kept under LFL. In this article, we conducted the injection of the dilution gas at the manifold between booster pump and dry pump compared with the typical method that the dilution gas was injected into inlet port of booster pump using computer simulation. According to the result, we can flow further more purge gas for safety without any change of the condition in the process chamber, which means that the higher capacity pump is not required for safety in some cases.

  • Recently, the international regulations about the exhaust emissions of the motorcycle have been strengthened. The electrically controlled fuel injection type motorcycle has been emphasized to meet with this regulation. However, since the pulsation phenomenon happens in the intake port of the motorcycle because of the characteristic of high speed and the smaller layout than the passenger car, there are many difficulties to select the factor about control parameters needed to develop the ECU system. In this paper, the pulsation values measured from the engine test were compared with the calculated one by WAVE, and it was analyzed the pulsation characteristic according to the driving condition and estimated the mass flow rate. This research showed that the lowest point of the pressure gets lowin the low load and the pulsation of pressure were increased in the high load. Also, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the pulsation and air mass flow rate.

Development of Conversion Technology of a Decrepit Diesel Vehicle to the Dedicated Natural Gas Vehicle (노후 디젤차량으로부터 전소 천연가스자동차로의 개조 기술 개발)

  • A commercial diesel engine was converted into a dedicated natural gas engine to reduce the exhaust emissions in a retrofit of a diesel-fueled vehicle. The cylinder head and piston were remodeled into engine parts suited for a spark ignition engine using natural gas. The remodeling of the combustion chamber changed the compression ratio from 21.5 to 10.5. A multi-point port injection(MPI) system for a dedicated natural gas engine was also adopted to increase the engine power and torque through improved volumetric efficiency, to allow a rapid engine response to changes in throttle position, and to control the precise equivalence ratio during cold-start and engine warm-up. The performance and exhaust emissions of the retrofitted natural gas engine after remodeling a diesel engine are investigated. The emissions of the retrofitted natural gas engine were low enough to satisfy the limits for a transitional low emission vehicle(TLEV) in Korea. We concluded that a diesel engine can be effectively converted into a dedicated natural gas engine without any deterioration in engine performance or exhaust emissions.

  • Three-way catalyst converter, cleaning up the exhaust gas contamination of SI engine, has the best efficiency when A/F ratio is near the stoichiometry . The feedback control using oxygen sensors in the exhaust manifold has limits caused by the system delays. So the accurate measurement of air flow rate to an engine is essential to control the fuel injection rate especially on transient condition like the rapid throttle opening and closing. To measure the rapid change of flow rates. the air flow meter for the engine requires quick response, flow reversal detection, and linearity . Tjhe proposed integration type air flow meter (IFM), composed of an ultrasonic flow meter with an integration circuit, has significantly improved the measurement accuracy of air mass inducted through the throttle body. The proposed control method estimated the air mass at the cylinder port using the measured air mass at the throttle . For the fuel dynamic model, the two constant fuel model is introduced . The control parameters from air and fuel dynamics are tuned to minimize the excursion of the air fuel ratio. As a result A/F ratio excursion can be reduced within 5% when throttle rapidly opens and closes at the various engine conditions.

Analysis of Volatile Fatty Acids in Air by Dynamic SPME (Dynamic SPME를 이용한 공기 중 지방산 분석)

  • In this study, the detection limits of lower fatty acids in air were investigated by using Dynamic SPME(Solid Phase Micro-Extraction), i.e. improved Head Space - SPME method(HS-SPME). This Dynamic SPME, called SPDE(Solid Phase Dynamic Extraction), is the analytical method for volatile compounds in air with the extraction by using a stainless steel needle of which inner surface is coated with adsorption material and following the gas chromatographic analysis by inserting the needle into a injection port of GC and subsequently, desorption of the volatile compounds into a gas-chromatographic column. Extraction was carried out by passing the sample air through the needle with a suction pump which has been used for a detection tube. The result of measurement for the 6 lower fatty acids showed that the detection limits ranged from 0.10 ppm to 0.44 ppm and the linear correlation coefficients were over 0.99. Relative standard deviations obtained from 5 analytical repetition of a ca. 1.6 ppm standard mixture were in the range of 1.87%~2.47%. This method has been shown to be a adequate for the measuring C2~C5 fatty acids in air in the concentrations of over several hundreds ppb.

Full mouth rehabilitation of a patient with Sturge-Weber syndrome using a mixture of general and sedative anesthesia

  • Issues related to the control of seizures and bleeding, as well as behavioral management due to mental retardation, render dental treatment less accessible or impossible for patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). A 41-year-old man with SWS visited a dental clinic for rehabilitation of missing dentition. A bilateral port-wine facial nevus and intraoral hemangiomatous swollen lesion of the left maxillary and mandibular gingivae, mucosa, and lips were noted. The patient exhibited extreme anxiety immediately after injection of a local anesthetic and required various dental treatments to be performed over multiple visits. Therefore, full-mouth rehabilitation over two visits with general anesthesia and two visits with target-controlled intravenous infusion of a sedative anesthesia were planned. Despite concerns regarding seizure control, bleeding control, and airway management, no specific complications occurred during the treatments, and the patient was satisfied with the results.

  • This paper presents the pulsation of carburetor inlet and outlet pressure of a small SI gasoline engine. The engine used in this paper is a 23cc, single cylinder, diaphragm carburetor, two-stroke, air-cooled for brush cutter. The rpm and pressure wave pulsation at the inlet and the outlet of carburetor were measured and analysed for the understand of the internal air flow into the barrel on the diaphragm carburetor. These data should be used for the development of the duel fuel injection system for gasoline and LPG. The results showed that the carburetor inlet pressure variations were very steady, but the pressure variations at carburetor outlet were very sensitive to the pressure variation into the crank case and were to similar independently to the engine speed on partial opened throttle conditions. According to increasing engine speed, the pressure waves started to come out and be developed after closing the intake port of the engine at carburetor outlet. Reverse flow occurred on the WOT (wide open throttle) condition.

  • We present a three-dimensional (3D) particle focusing channel using the positive dielectrophoresis (pDEP) guided by a dielectric structure between two planar electrodes. The dielectric structure between two planar electrodes induces the maximum electric field at the center of the microchannel, and particles are focused to the center of the microchannel by pDEP as they flow from the single sample injection port. Compared to the previous 3D particle focusing methods, the present device achieves the simple and effective particle focusing function without any additional fluidic ports and top electrodes. In the experimental study, approximately 90 % focusing efficiency were achieved within the focusing length of 2mm, on both x-z plane (top-view) and y-z plane (side-view) for $2{\mu}m$-diameter polystyrene (PS) bead at the applied voltage over 15 Vp-p (square wave) and at the flow rate below 0.01 ${\mu}l$/min. The present 3D particle focusing channel results in a simple particle focusing method suitable for use in integrated microbiochemical analysis system.
