NUMERICAL SOLUTION FOR WOOD DRYING ON ONE-DIMENSIONAL GRID

  • A mathematical modeling for the drying process of hygroscopic porous media, such as wood, has been developed in the past decades. The governing equations for wood drying consist of three conservation equations with respect to the three state variables, moisture content, temperature and air density. They are involving simultaneous, highly coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena. In recent, the equations were extended to account for material heterogeneity through the density of the wood and via the density variation of the material process, capillary pressure, absolute permeability, bound water diffusivity and effective thermal conductivity. In this paper, we investigate the drying behavior for the three primary variables of the drying process in terms of control volume finite element method to the heterogeneous transport model on one-dimensional grid.

  • Subsurface biobarrier technology has potential applications to contain contaminated groundwater and/or to degrade toxic pollutants in groundwater. Most biobarrier studies were conducted under aerobic condition, however there were several obstacles to make aerobic condition. Thus, In this study, we examined biobarrier formation under denitrifying condition by using nitrate as an electron acceptor. Experiments were performed with a sand column inoculated with activated sludge from the nearby WWTP. The substrate medium was pumped to the sand column in an upflow mode. During the low substrate loading rate period, the extent of reduction rate in hydraulic conductivity was found similar throughout the column, and permeability became relatively stable after couple of days. However, during the high substrate loading rate period, the column demonstrated a gradient of permeability reduction, with the greatest reduction in sections nearest the column inlet. Rapid growth of microorganisms near the column inlet resulted in the unbalanced reduction of hydraulic conductivity throughout the sand column. As a result, at this denitrifying condition the thickness of biobarrier could be controlled by adjusting the medium conditions of microbial growth.

  • Various Models of the moisture content-capillary pressure hysteresie based on the approach of domain concept in porous media are compared with each other, Model III-1(Mualem, 1984) is superio to others as expected. A new model based on Model III-1 is proposed of which asuumption is the linearization of P$$($\theta$) accounting for the pore blockage effect against air-entry. The feature of this model is that only one branch of boundary curve is needed to calibrate it, which is the advantage to Model III-1. The prediction of boundary drying curve from boundary wetting curve using this model is better than that using Model I-1, II-1 compared with the experimental data. This model is to simulate scanning curves, while Model I-1, II-1 is not.

  • This paper reports the experimental results for the determination of the overall partition coefficient of VOCs in unsaturated soil, A chromatographic method was used for the determination of gaseous partition coefficients to natural soil under various water content conditions. The equilibrium vapor pressure of water over saturated salt solution was used to fix the relative humidity of the air and control the water content of the soil systems. The transport behavior was studied for dichloromethane, trichloroethane and dichlorobenzene pollutants, with log octanol-water partition coefficients(log $K_{ow}$ ) which range from 1.25 to 3.39, or water to soil partitioning which varies by 135 times; water solubility constants which vary by 3 times; and vapor pressures which range from 1 to 362 torr. Water content of the soil had a pronounced effect on the effective partition coefficient(between gas and soil + water stationary phase) as well as on the effective dispersion coefficient.

  • The carbon nano-structured materials could be applied to the fields of advanced fillers, templates, electrode materials, sensor, storage, and absorption materials. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon nano-particles provide the remarkable properties of high specific surface area, large pore volume, chemical inertness, and good mechanical stability. In this study, well-defined carbon nano-particles were obtained through pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile based particles. The precursor nano-particles were prepared by modified aqueous dispersion polymerization using hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) in a water/ N,N-dimethylformamide mixture media. Synthesized precursor nanoparticles have relatively monodisperse particles ranging 80 ~ 250nm. Stable spherical particles are obtained without coagulum or secondary particles in our system. The characteristic of the carbon nanoparticles were investigated in terms of surface area, morphology, and size distribution.

Simulations of LNAPL flow and distribution in heterogeneous porous media under dynamic hydyogeologic conditions

  • 불포화대에서 LNAPL의 이동과 분포를 수치 모의를 통하여 예측하였다. 균질한 매질에서 LNAPL의 이동은 조립질 매질에서 빠르고, 세립질 매질에서 더 많은 면적으로 확산되며, 더 많은 LNAPL이 불포화대에 잔류한다. 조립질 매질내에 세립질층이 존재할 경우, 이 층이 지하수면으로부터 멀수록 LNAPL이 많이 포획된다. 조립질 매질에 세립질 또는 더 조립질인 매질이 렌즈 상으로 존재하는 환경에서는, LNAPL이 이들 렌즈를 통과하지 못한다. 불균질한 렌즈가 존재할 때의 LNAPL 분포를 초기조건으로 이용하여, 지하수 면의 수직 이동과 물의 침투에 따른 LNAPL의 이동을 모의하였다. 두 경우 모두 불포화대에 잔류되어 있던 LNAPL의 수직방향 이동이 증가되었다. 특히, 지하수면의 하강 시 LNAPL이 조립질 렌즈를 통해 이동하나, 세립질 렌즈를 통해서는 이동하지 못한다.

  • In this paper, heat and mass transfer characteristics through experimental and numerical study are extensively investigated in steam reforming reactor under given operating conditions. In order to get simulated data at outlet of the reformer, heterogeneous reactor model is incorporated. As the reaction also takes place in porous media, two medium approach is used to take into account thermally non-equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. From various parametric studies, significance of heat transfer is emphasized in steam reforming reaction.

  • Steam reforming reaction is a matured technology to get hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels compared with other reforming reactions such as partial oxidation(POX), autothermal reforming(ATR). It is so endothermic that it needs heat source to activate the reaction. Due to the reaction characteristics, heat transfer limitation phenomena generally occur in the steam reformer. As one of new ideas, the effect of discontinuous gas feeding is investigated based on heat transfer characteristics. The new operating method is usually favorable at high GHSV region(i.e. over $10,000h^{-1}$). In order to numerically simulate the physical issues, numerical approach is adopted based on heterogeneous reaction model, two-equation model in energy equation, and other constitutive models in porous media.

  • In this study, gas hydrate production has been followed using swapping method to investigate the effect of injection rate of flue gas and soaking period in unconsolidated artificial sand sample. The results shows that recovery factor of methane gas decreases with increasing the injection rate of flue gas. This indicates that the velocity of flue gas in porous media may act as kinds of inhibitor for production of hydrate. Also recovery factor increases with increasing the soaking time.

  • 포화-비포화 영역에서 transient흐름 해석을 위해 유체의 연속방정식과 Darcy 법칙으로부터 다공질 매체에서의 흐름 지배방정식을 유도하였다. 수치해는 가중잔차원리에 입각한 Galerkin 유한요소법으로 구하며, 시간도함수항에는 유한차분법을 적용하였다. 해석에서는 실제 자연상태에서 발생되는 부정호우자료를 이용하고 이때의 지표하 흐름 해석에 필요한 강우 주상도는 제 손실성분을 고려한 초과우량 추정모형으로부터 얻었다. 비포화 토양에서의 흐름을 고려하기 위해 투수계수, 압력수두 및 체적함수비의 상호 함수관계를 이용하였다. 모형은 대칭인 2차원으로서 비등방성, 이질 토층으로 구성하였다.
