  • Effects of porous wind fences on the wind erosion of particles from a triangular sand pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Flow visualization was carried out to investigate the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the particle size, fence porosity $\varepsilon$ and the height of sand pile. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity $\varepsilon$=30% was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles. With increasing the sand particle diamter, the threshold velocity was also increased. When the height of sand pile is lower than the fence height, threshold velocity is enhanced.

  • A Monte Carlo simulation based on Potts model in a three dimensional lattice was studied to analyze and design microstructures in porous sintered compacts such as porosity, pore size, grain (particle) size and contiguity of grains. The effect of surface energy of particles and the content of additional fine particles to coarse particles on microstructure development were examined to obtain fundamentals for material design in porous materials. It has been found that the larger surface energy enhances sintering (necking) of particles and increases contiguity and surface energy does not change pore size and grain size. The addition of fine particles also enhances sintering of particles and increases contiguity, but it has an effect on increment of pore size and grain size. Such a simulation technique can give us important information or wisdom for design of porous materials, e.g., material system with high surface energy and fine particle audition are available for higher strength and larger porosity in porous sintered compacts with applications in an automobile.

  • Damping systems have been widely used to various industrial structures and are mainly hydraulic and pneumatic devices nowadays. In this work, a novel damping system based on the colloidal suspension in the field of nanotechnology is investigated. The colloidal suspension consists of Iyophobic working fluid and hydrophobic-coated porous particle. The mechanism of mechanical energy dissipation in damping system based on the colloidal suspension with nano-porous particles is different from that of the existing hydraulic damping system. The absorbed energy of the damping system using colloidal suspension can be calculated through the mechanical equilibrium condition by the superficial tensions of liquid-gas Interface in the hydrophobic surface in nano-porous particles. The results from an analytic approach have a reasonable agreement with experimental results.

  • In order to fabricate double-layered porous materials powders of different particle sizes were pressed stepwise. Ford's equation which predicts the fired density with the change in pressed density was employed in order to adjust the difference in sintering shrinkage of the green body with double-layered porous structure. Double-layered porous materials were characterized by investigating microstructures and permeability. SEM micrographs showed the distinct difference in pore sizes of double-layered porous material. Permeability of single-layered porous material increased by increasing the starting particle sizes and porosity as well. Permeability of the double-layered porous material depends largely on the layer of small pore diameter.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate mechanical properties of the porous Ti implants according to porosity. Porous Ti implant will be had properties similar to human bone such as microstructure and mechanical properties. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders(below $25{\mu}m$, $25{\sim}32{\mu}m$, $32{\sim}38{\mu}m$, and $38{\sim}45{\mu}m$) in a high vacuum furnace. Specimen's diameter and height were 4mm and 40 mm. Surface and sectional images of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM). Porosity and average pore size were evaluated by mercury porosimeter. Young's modulus and tensile strength were evaluated by universal testing machine(UTM). Results: Porosity of Implant was increased according to larger particle size of the powder. Boundary portions of particles are sintered fully and others portions were formed pore. Young's modulus was decreased by formed porous structure. Tensile strength was decreased according to larger the particle size of the powder, but higher than human bone. Conclusion: If prepared by adjust the porosity of the porous Ti implant will be able to resolve the stress shielding phenomenon.

  • Experiments on evaporative spray cooling on the square plate heaters with plain or micro-porous coated surfaces were performed in this study. Micro-porous coated surfaces were made by using DOM [Diamond particle, Omegabond 101, Methyl-Ethyl-Keton] method. In case of purely air-jet cooling, the micro-porous coating doesn't affect the cooling capacity. In spray cooling three different flow patterns (complete wetting, evaporative wetting, dryout) are observed on both plain and micro-porous coated surfaces. The effects of various operating conditions, such as water flow rate, particle size, and coating thickness were investigated on the micro-porous coated surfaces. It is found that the level of surface wetting is an important factor to determine the performance of spray cooling. It depends on the balance between absorbed liquid amount by capillary force over porosity and the evaporative amount. The micro-porous coated surface has largest cooling capacity, especially in the evaporative wetting zone. It is found that the effects of liquid flow rate and coating thickness are significant in evaporative wetting zone, but are not in complete wetting and dryout zones.

  • To fabricate porous SiC-Si composites for heating element applications, both SiC powders and Si powders were mixed and sintered together. The properties of the sintered SiC-Si body were investigated as a function of SiC particle size and/or Si particle contents from 10 wt% to 40 wt%, respectively. Porous SiC-Si composites were fabricated by Si bonded reaction at a sintering temperature of $1650^{\circ}C$ for 80 min. The microstructure and phase analysis of SiC-Si composites that depend on Si particle contents were characterized using scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The electrical resistivity of SiC-Si composites was also evaluated using a 4-point probe resistivity method. The electrical resistivity of the sintered SiC-Si body sharply decreased as the amount of Si addition increased. We found that the electrical resistivity of porous SiC-Si composites is closely related to the amount of Si added and at least 20 wt% Si are needed in order to apply the SiCSi composites to the heating element.

  • A series of spherical porous carbons were prepared via resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol-gel polymerization in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), wherein the carbon sphere size was controlled by varying the CTAB introduction time after a pre-determined period of addition reaction (termed as "pre-curing"). The sphere size gradually decreases with an increase in the pre-curing time within the range of 30-150 nm. The carbons possess two types of pores; one inside carbon spheres (intra-particle pores) and the other at the interstitial sites made by carbon spheres (inter-particle pores). Of the two, the surface exposed on the former was dominant to determine the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) performance of porous carbons. As the intra-particle pores were generated inside RF gel spheres by gasification, the pore diameter was similar for all these carbons, thereby the pore length turned out to be a decisive factor controlling the EDLC performance. The charge-discharge voltage profiles and complex capacitance analysis consistently illustrate that the smaller-sized RF carbons deliver a better rate capability, which must be the direct result of facilitated ion penetration into shorter pores.

  • The exhaust emissions from coal-fired power plants have received much attention because coal-fired power plants are the one of the largest sources of particulate matter (PM) emissions in South Korea. To measure the PM10 and PM2.5, we developed the novel diluter which is comprised of ejector and porous tube in series. The dilution ratio must be defined to calculate particle concentrations of the sampled air as well as to probe match for the isokinetic sampling. For this reason, we verified the dilution ratio of the developed diluter by the flow rate, numerical solution, gas concentration and particle concentration. The ejector-supplied flow rates were 10-50 L/min and the porous tube-supplied flow rates were 30, 50 L/min in this study. All methods above showed similar dilution ratios to each other within 10 % error rate. The dilution ratio was confirmed by comparing mass concentrations before and after the dilution process.
