Among the different techniques available, nuclear methods, including gamma-gamma logging tools, are of special importance. Though the real environment which surrounds the drilled borehole is a complex fractured medium which the fluid can flow through the porosities, simulation studies generally use the traditional model of a homogeneous mixture of formation and the liquid. Considering a previously published study, which shows that modeling of fluid flow in fractured reservoirs and simulating the formation as an inhomogeneous fractured medium leads to different results compared with those of homogeneous mixture, here we study the effect of the presence of drilling fluid (mudcake) on the response of the detectors in both the models. To study this effect, a typical gamma-gamma logging tool was modeled by using the MCNPX Monte Carlo code. The results show that the responses of the detectors in the mixture model in the presence of various thicknesses of mudcake are sensitive to the density of the formation material. However, this effect is not notable in the inhomogeneous fractured medium. These results emphasize the importance of the model employed for simulation of the medium in gamma-gamma well-logging.
In this paper, we present a numerical model for fluid-structure interaction between structure built of porous media and acoustic fluid, which provides both pore pressure inside porous media and hydrodynamic pressures and hydrodynamic forces exerted on the upstream face of the structure in an unified manner and simplifies fluid-structure interaction problems. The first original feature of the proposed model concerns the structure built of saturated porous medium whose response is obtained with coupled discrete beam lattice model, which is based on Voronoi cell representation with cohesive links as linear elastic Timoshenko beam finite elements. The motion of the pore fluid is governed by Darcy's law, and the coupling between the solid phase and the pore fluid is introduced in the model through Biot's porous media theory. The pore pressure field is discretized with CST (Constant Strain Triangle) finite elements, which coincide with Delaunay triangles. By exploiting Hammer quadrature rule for numerical integration on CST elements, and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with an additional pore pressure degree of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The second original point of the model concerns the motion of the outside fluid which is modeled with mixed displacement/pressure based formulation. The chosen finite element representations of the structure response and the outside fluid motion ensures for the structure and fluid finite elements to be connected directly at the common nodes at the fluid-structure interface, because they share both the displacement and the pressure degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations presented in this paper show an excellent agreement between the numerically obtained results and the analytical solutions.
The purpose of this study is to illustrate the propagation of the shear waves (SH-waves) in a prestressed hetrogeneous orthotropic media overlying a pre-stressed anisotropic porous half-space with self weight. It is considered that the compressive initial stress, mass density and moduli of rigidity of the upper layer are space dependent. The proposed model is solved to obtain the different dispersion relations for the SH-wave in the elastic-porous medium of different properties. The effects of compressive and tensile stresses along with the heterogeneity, porosity, Biot's gravity parameter on the dispersion of SH-wave are shown numerically. The wave analysis further indicates that the technical parameters of upper and lower half-space affect the wave velocity significantly. The results may be useful to understand the nature of seismic wave propagation in geophysical applications and in the field of earthquake and material science engineering.
The presence of the pore fluid strongly influences the reponse of the soil subjected to external loading and in many cases increases the risk of final failure. In this paper, we propose the use of a discrete beam lattice model with the aim to investigate the coupling effects of the solid and fluid phase on the response and failure mechanisms in the saturated soil. The discrete cohesive link lattice model used in this paper, is based on inelastic Timoshenko beam finite elements with enhanced kinematics in axial and transverse direction. The coupling equations for the soil-pore fluid interaction are derived from Terzaghi's principle of effective stresses, Biot's porous media theory and Darcy's law for fluid flow through porous media. The application of the model in soil mechanics is illustrated through several numerical simulations.
Water is continuously produced in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and is transported and exhausted through polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), catalyst layer (CL), microporous layer (MPL), and gas diffusion layer (GDL). The low operation temperatures of PEMFC lead to the condensation of water, and the condensed water hinders the transport of reactants in porous layers (MPL and GDL). Thus, water flooding is currently one of hot issues that should be solved to achieve higher performance of PEMFC. This research aims to study liquid water transport in porous layers of PEMFC by using pore-network model, while the microscale pore structure and hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface properties of GDL and MPL were fully considered.
In the present work the influence of various physical parameters on the two-phase flow behavior in a self-heated porous medium has been studied using a numerical model, that is, the effects of heat generation rate, of porosity, of particle size, and of system pressure on the dryout process. To analyze the effect of these parameters, the variation of both liquid volumetric fraction (i.e., liquid saturation) and liquid axial velocity is evaluated at the steady state or at the onset of a first boiled-out region. The analysis of computational results indicate that a qualitative tendency exists between the parameters such as heat generation rate, porosity, effective particle diameter and the temporal development of the liquid volumetric fraction field up to dryout. In addition to these parameters, a variation of fluid properties such as phase density, phase viscosity due to a change of system pressure can be used for gaining insight into the nature of two-phase flow behavior up to dryout.
In this article, the generalized thermoelastic theory with fractional derivative is presented to estimate the variation of temperature, the components of stress, the components of displacement and the changes in volume fraction field in two-dimensional porous media. Easily, the exact solutions in the Laplace domain are obtained. By using Laplace and Fourier transformations with the eigenvalues method, the physical quantities are obtained analytically. The numerical results for all the physical quantities considered are implemented and presented graphically. The results display that the present model with the fractional derivative is reduced to the Lord and Shulman (LS) and the classical dynamical coupled (CT) theories when the fractional parameter is equivalent to one and the delay time is equal to zero and respectively.
In the present study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a large plate heat exchanger are investigated numerically. The flow passages are very complicated due to the grooved corrugation patterns of the plate surface so that the detailed mesh and the large amount of the computation time have to be required in the numerical simulation for the conjugate heat transfer analysis. In order to accomplish the efficient and fast analysis of the heat transfer characteristics in the plate heat exchanger, a semimicroscopic method using the porous media model has been investigated numerically. The results showed that the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop, which are respectively presented with Colburn j-factor and Fanning f-factor, are in a good agreement between the detailed mesh and the porous media model. The results of the present study could be applicable to the numerical analysis of entire flow passages in the large plate heat exchanger using porous media treatment.
This study aims to investigate numerically the static and dynamic stiffness characteristics of porous air bearing and to estimate appropriate permeability values of porous medium. In particular, a new roughness model is proposed and implemented into the commercial CFD code (FLUENT Ver.6.2). The predicted results are extensively compared with experimental data for static cases. The roughness model is also validated through comparison with the results from open literature. For the dynamic cases, the deforming and re-meshing technique is used for describing fluid-solid interactions. It is found that the predictions for static stiffness are in good agreement with experimental data and the dynamic stiffness appears to be relatively smaller than the static stiffness. In addition, moving and dynamic analysis of air bearing seems to be possible to provide qualitative predictions even if there are somewhat discrepancies quantitatively, compared to experimental data.
Based upon differential quadrature method (DQM) and nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT), mechanical-hygro-thermal vibrational analyzes of shear deformable porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplate on visco-elastic medium has been performed. The presented formulation incorporates two scale factors for examining vibrational behaviors of nano-dimension plates more accurately. The material properties for FG plate are porosity-dependent and defined employing a modified power-law form. It is supposed that the nano-size plate is exposed to hygro-thermal and variable compressive mechanical loadings. The governing equations achieved by Hamilton's principle are solved implementing DQM. Presented results indicate the prominence of moisture/temperature variation, damping factor, material gradient index, nonlocal coefficient, strain gradient coefficient and porosities on vibrational frequencies of FG nano-size plate.
