Characteristics of the Ceramic Filter with the Control of Particle Size and Graphite Additive for the Hazardous Particle and Gas Removal (입도와 흑연 첨가제에 따른 유해 입자 및 가스 동시제거용 세라믹필터 특성평가)

  • In this study, the porous ceramic filter was developed to be able to remove both dust and hazardous gas contained in fuel gas at high temperature. The porous ceramic filters were fabricated and used as a catalyst support. And the effects have been investigated such as the mean particle size, organic content and addition of foaming agent on the porosity, compressive strength and pressure drop of ceramic filters. With the increase of mean powder size and the organic content for the cordierite filter, the porosity was increased, but the compressive strength and pressure drop were decreased. From the results of the research, the optimum condition for the fabrication of ceramic filters could be acquired and they had the porosity of 58%, the compressive strength of 13.4 MPa and the pressure drop of 250 Pa. It was expected that this ceramic filter was able to be applied to the glass melting furnace, combustor, and dust/toxic gas removal filter.

  • This paper presents a novel structure for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with inclined gas paths, which was designed so that the gas paths offered a fluent flow of exhaust gases, and particulate matter (PM) was collected at pores formed in the body. The alumina porous filter was prepared by a conventional sintering process at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Straight gas paths with $30^{\circ}$ of inclination from the gas flow direction were formed in the filter body. It is shown that this filter structure worked as a PM filter, in which 90.2% of soot filtration efficiency and 59.6 mbar of pressure drop were achieved.

  • In this study, we attempt to synthesize the cordierite from the reaction of fly-ash, alumina, silicon dioxide, and magnesia powders. For the purpose of air purification, the honeycomb filter with porous cordierite was fabricated from the combination of synthetic cordierite and pore forming agent. Fabricated porous cordierite honeycomb was prepared with high porosity (58%), and good compressive strength (69MPa).

The Effect of Chemical Vapor Infiltrated SiC Whiskers on the Change in the Pore Structure of a Porous SiC Body

  • In this study, SiC whiskers were grown on a porous SiC diesel particulate filter for nanoparticle filtering. To grow the whiskers at the inner pore without closing the pores, we used chemical vapor infiltration with a solution source and a dilute. As the deposition time increased, the whiskers grew and formed a network structure. After 180 min of deposition, the mean diameter of the whiskers was 174 nm and the compressive strength was 58.4 MPa. The pores shrank from $10{\mu}m\;to\;0.4{\mu}m$ and, because the whiskers filed the inner pores, the gradient of permeability decreased as the deposition time increased. However, by using the network structure of whiskers deposited for 120 min and 180 min, we obtained a diesel particulate filter with pores of $0.98{\mu}m\;and\;0.4{\mu}m$, respectively. Furthermore, the filter shows better permeability than a porous body with pores of $1{\mu}m$. In short, by filtering the nanoparticulate materials, the network structure of whiskers improves the strength, reduces the pore size and minimizes the permeability drop.

  • A numerical analysis of the pulse-jet cleaning characteristics in a porous ceramic candle filter system was performed. To obtain the detailed velocity and pressure distribution during the cleaning process in a porous filter system, the axi-symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations including energy conservation equation were solved by using the FLUENT code which adopts FVM (Finite Volume Method). The effects of pulse cleaning nozzle diameter, nozzle tip position, permeability of a porous ceramic candle filter, diffuser throat diameter, and cleaning pressure on the cleaning flow characteristics were investigated extensively.

  • The long time of twenty years has passed since Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) was proposed before the practical use. The main factors that DPF has been put to practical use in this time, are the same time proposal of the evaluation method of SiC porous materials linked to he performance on the vehicle, and that the nature of thermal shock required for the soot regeneration (combustion of soot) in the DPF is different from the conventional requirement for the rather rapid thermal shock. For the requirements, these includ demonstrating utmost the characteristic of SiC's high thermal conductivity, and overcoming the difficulty of thermal expansion of SiC-DPF by dividing the filter into segments binding with the cement of lower Young's modulus, and the innovation of technology around the diesel exhaust system such as Common-Rail system. As the results of these, the cumulative shipments of SiC-DPF have reached about 5 million, and it goes at no claim in the market.

Specific Resistance (K2´) of Dust Layer Deposited on Porous Media (다공성 필터에서의 여과 분진층 비저항 연구)

  • In the dust separation by using porous filter media, the structure of dust layer deposited on the filter surface of filter medium directly affects the effective filtration. The present study has investigated the specific resistance (K$_2$') of the dust layer and its porosity ($\varepsilon$$_{c}$) for three different filters; FA composite filter, metal fiber filter and stainless filter. The specific resistance (K$_2$') increased and at the same time the cake porosity ($\varepsilon$$_{c}$) decreased with the increase of filtration velocity, possibly due to the compressible effect of dust layer. However, under the low dust concentration, subsequent dust particles would block the open channels through the layer resulting in high specific resistance of the layer. The FA composite filter among three filters was shown to be the most effective filter for dust cake filtration at low filtration velocities less than 0.1 m/s for an approximate dust concentration of 5 g/㎥.

  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) is comprised of a number of capillary tubes enclosed by porous ceramic wails, shaped like a plugged duct. Hot gas flows through the DPF along with the exhaust noise from Diesel engine. Based on previous works on the sound propagation through DPF, in this study, losses at entrance, exit, and ceramic walls are considered and the gradients in temperature and flow velocity are considered. Transfer matrix at entrance, monolith, and exit parts are obtained by employing the segmental approach in analyzing the sound propagation through DPF. The predicted transmission loss agrees very well with the empirical one, which is measured by the improved method with correction terms.

Characteristics of the Non-electric Water Purification System Using Onggi Filter (옹기 필터를 이용한 무 전원 정수 장치에 관한 연구)

  • A non-electric water purification system using the Korean traditional ceramic ware Onggi, was demonstrated as an appropriate technology to solve water shortages in under developed regions. Generally, Onggi is produced using large size raw materials that are sintered at low temperature, resulting in a porous body that shows air and water permeability. An Onggi filter was prepared using a spinning wheel with the addition of rice bran to the body to increase porosity. The porosity of the obtained Onggi filter was 25.1%; the water permeability was 85.1 $L/m^2h$. Turbidity and TDS of the purified water using Onggi filter were decreased by 97.7% and 29.1%, respectively.

  • Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide(RBSC) has been used for engineering ceramics due to low-temperature fabrication and near-net shape products with excellent structural properties such as thermal shock resistance, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Recently, attempts have been made to develop hot gas filter with gradient pore structure by RBSC to overcome weakness of commercial clay-bonded SiC filter such as low fracture toughness and low reliability. In this study a fabrication process of porous RBSC with multi-layer pore structure with gradient pore size was developed. The support layer of the RBSC with multi-layer pore structure was fabricated by conventional Si infiltration process. The intermediate and filter layers consisted of phenolic resin and fine SiC powder were prepared by dip-coating of the support RBSC in slurry of SiC and phenol resin. The temperature of $1550^{\circ}C$ to make Si left in RBSC support layer infiltrate into dip-coated layer to produce SiC by reacting with pyro-carbon from phenol resin.
