  • A numerical simulation of membrane evaporation process was carried out in this work. The aim of simulation is to describe transport of water through porous membranes applicable to the concentration of aqueous solutions. A three-dimensional mathematical model was developed which considers transport phenomena including mass, heat, and momentum transfer in membrane evaporation process. The equations of model were then solved numerically using finite element method. The results of simulation in terms of evaporation flux were compared with experimental data, and confirmed the accuracy of model. Moreover, profile of pressure, concentration, and heat flux were obtained and analyzed. The results revealed that developed 3D model is capable of predicting performance of membrane evaporators in concentration of aqueous solutions.

  • The membrane filter coated with nanostructured porous surface layer was made by heat treatment after depositing nanoparticles onto a conventional micron-fibrous metal filter as a substrate filter. The nanostructured porous layer membrane filter (NSPL-MF), whose the filtration performance was improved compared with the conventional metal membrane filters, was developed by coating the nanoparticle agglomerates of dendrite structure onto the micron-fibrous metal filter. Pressure drop of nanostructured porous layer membrane filter decreased with increasing the heat treatment temperature to make the nanostructured porous layer adhered on the filter surface because the nanoparticle agglomerates shrank, but filtration efficiency did not decrease clearly.

  • Phospholipase D (PLD) was immobilized on a submicro-porous membrane through covalent immobilization. The immobilization was conducted on the porous membrane surface with the treatment of polyethyleneimine, glutaraldehyde, and the anhydrase, in sequence. The immobilization was confirmed using X-ray photon spectrometer. The pH values of phosphatidylcholine (PC) dispersion solution with buffer were monitored with respect to time to calculate the catalytic activities of PC for free and immobilized PLD. The catalytic rate constant values for free PLD, immobilized PLD on polystyrene nanoparticles, and immobilized PLD on a porous cellulose acetate membrane were 0.75, 0.64, and 0.52 s-1, respectively. Reusability was studied up to 10 cycles of PC hydrolysis. The activity for the PLD immobilized on the membrane was kept to 95% after 10 cycles, and comparable to the PLD on the nanoparticles. The stabilities for heat and storage were also investigated for the three cases. The results suggested that the PLD immobilized on the membrane had the least loss rate of the activity compared to the others. From these studies, the porous membrane was feasible as a carrier for the PLD immobilization in the production of phosphatidic acid.

  • A numerical study on the hydrodynamic properties of a floating flexible breakwater consisting of triple vertical porous membrane structures attached to a floating rigid pontoon restrained by moorings is carried out in the context of two-dimensional linear wave-flexible body interaction theory. The tensions in the triple membranes are achieved by hanging a clump weight from its lower ends. The clump weight is also restrained properly by moorings. The dynamic behavior of the breakwater was described through an appropriate Green function, and the fluid multi-domains are incorporated into the boundary integral equation. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the effects of the various wave and structural parameters on the efficiency of the breakwater as a barrier to wave action. It is found that the wave reflection and transmission properties of the structures depends strongly on the membrane length taking major fraction of water column, the magnitude of tensions on membrane achieving by the clump weight, proper mooring types and stiffness, the permeability on the membrane dissipating wave energy.

  • Porous polyurethane membrane was prepared by the phase inversion process with variable permeability in response to pH and solvent composition. Hydrophilic polymers were grafted on the surface of the symmetric porous membrane. Porous polyurethane membrane was obtained in DMSO/methanol. It was subsequently grafted with acrylamide on the surface with ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as a initiator, followed by the hydrolysis to obtain poly(acrylic acid-g-urethane) (PAA-g-PU) membrane. The change in permeability of vitamine $B_2$(riboflavin) was investigated through PAA-g-PU. For PAA-g-PU membrane, permeability increased with the decrease in pH, and with an increase in solvent content in sink solution.

  • Porous PVDF hollow fiber membranes were prepared by hybrid process of TIPS(thermally induced phase separation) and stretching for membrane distillation. The tests were conducted to investigate that permeability of the membrane could be enhanced by reducing membrane wall thickness. During fiber spinning, dope discharge rate from nozzle was reduced and flow rate of bore fluid increased to make the wall thickness thinner. As dope discharge rate from nozzle was reduced and flow rate of bore fluid increased, the membrane wall thickness was reduced. As a result, air permeability, water permeability and vapor permeability of the membranes increased.

  • The osmotic delivery systems are based on osmosis. The transverse diffusion of water through a porous membrane from a medium with a low osmotic pressure to a medium with a high osmotic pressure. Nifedipine tablet dosage forms of Procardia $XL^{(R)}$(Pfizer) and $Adalat^{(R)}$(Bayer) are commercialized systems of this type that push-pull osmotic tablet operates successfully in delivering water-insoluble drugs. We prepared osmotic pellet system by fluidized bed coating method, and model-drug used nifedipine. The osmotic pellet system was composed of the core material. the swelling and osmotic pressure layer, the drug coating layer, and the porous membrane. This work is performed to investigate the effect of different factors, such as composition and thickness of membrane. The osmotic pellet has been successfully prepared by fluidized bed coating technology. The drug release behavior depended on the increase of CA ratio and thickness in porous membrane. The morphology of the osmotic pellet before and after the dissolution test were observed by SEM. In conclusion, we found that the drug release of osmotic pellet depended on the composition and coating thickness of porous membrane.

  • In this work, porous silicon(PS) layer is used as a sensing material to detect organic gases. To do this, PS sensors with membrane structure are fabricated. The sensors were made by applying the technologies of membrane formation by anisotropic etching of silicon, and PS layer formation by anodization in HF solution. From fabricated sensors, current-voltage (I-V) curves were measured against ethanol (called alcohol), methanol and acetone gases evaporated from 0.1 to 0.5% solution concentrations at $36^{\circ}C$. As the result, all curves showed rectifying behavior due to a diode structure between Si and PS, and the conductance of sensor devices increased largely with the organic solution concentration at high voltage of 5V.

  • Wastewater treatment using membrane bioreactors has been extensively used to alleviate water shortage and pollution by improving the quality of the treated water discharged into the environment. However, membrane biofouling persistently holds back an MBR process by reducing the process efficiency. Herein, we synthesized carbon nanospheres (CNSs) with many hydrophilic oxygen groups and utilized them as an additive to prepare high-performance ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with hydrophilicity and porous pore structure. CNSs were found to form crescent-shaped pores on the membrane surface, increasing the mean surface pore size by about 40% without causing significant defects larger than bubble points, as the CNS content increased by 4.6 wt%. In addition, the porous pore structure of CNS composite membranes was also attributable to the CNS's isotropic morphologies and relatively low particle number density because the aforementioned properties contributed to preventing the polymer solution viscosity from soaring with the loading of CNS. However, too porous structure compromised the mechanical properties, such that CNS2.3 was the best from a comprehensive consideration including the pore structure and mechanical properties. As a result, CNS2.3 showed not only 2 times higher water permeability than CNS0 but also 5 times longer operation duration until membrane cleaning was required.
