Relationships between surface structure and adsorption properties of smoke components were investigated in surface-modified and un-modified activated carbon filter cigarettes. Commercially available activated carbon was treated with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, and their pore volume, surface structure, BET surface area, pore type and size were studied. BET surface area and pore volume were decreased by nitric acid treatment, but median pore diameter was 8.1 $\AA$, which showed better development of pore compared with that of un-modified activated carbon, 6.9 $\AA$. In case of hydrogen peroxide treatment, BET surface area and pore volume were increased. Their pore was found to be a slit type based on V-t plot analysis. Neutralization capacities for bases of different strength (NaHCO3, Na2CO3, NaOEt and NaOH) showed that the majority of the acidic surface groups are of weak acidity. Modification of the activated carbon surface led to a slight change in adsorption properties when analyzing the smoke of triple-filter cigarette with surface-modified activated carbon.
The effect of pore former content on both porosity and pore structure was investigated for porous sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitrides (SRBSNs). A spherical PMMA with $d_{50}=8{\mu}m$ was employed as a pore-former. Its amount ranged from 0 to 30 part. Porous SRBSNs were fabricated by post-sintering at various temperatures where the porosity was controlled at $12{\sim}52%$. The strong tendency of increasing porosity with PMMA content and decreasing porosity with sintering temperature was observed. Measured pore-channel diameter increased $(0.3{\rightarrow}1.1{\mu}m)$ with both PMMA content and sintering temperature.
The effect of electrochemical modification of the physical and mechanical properties of sandstone from Paleozoic coal measure strata was investigated by means of liquid nitrogen physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests using purified water, 1 mol/L NaCl, 1 mol/L $CaCl_2$ and 1 mol/L $AlCl_3$ aqueous solution as electrolytes. Electrochemical corrosion of electrodes and wire leads occurred mainly in the anodic zone. After electrochemical modification, pore morphology showed little change in distribution, decrease in total pore specific surface area and volume, and increased average pore diameter. The total pore specific surface area in the anodic zone was greater than in the cathodic zone, but total pore volume was less. Mineralogical composition was unchanged by the modification. Changes in UCS were caused by a number of factors, including corrosion, weakening by aqueous solutions, and electrochemical cementation, and electrochemical cementation stronger than corrosion and weakening by aqueous solutions.
The analytical results are presented for the mass transfer in a cylindrical pore covering from the macroscale, multiscale to nanoscale owing to the variation of the inner diameter of the pore. When the thickness hbf of the physically adsorbed layer potentially fully formed on the pore wall is comparable to but less than the inner radius R0 of the pore, the multiscale flow occurs consisting of both the nanoscale non-continuum adsorbed layer flow and the macroscopic continuum liquid flow; When R0 ≤ hbf, the flow in the whole pore is essentially non-continuum; When R0 is far greater than hbf, the flow in the whole pore can be considered as macroscopic and continuum and the adsorbed layer effect is negligible.
We intended to make the activated carbon fibers which could separate, remove and recover the volatile organic compounds of benzene, toluene, acetone and methanol. Changing activation temperature and time, large specific surface area and narrow pore distribution could be obtained. The activated carbon fibers have large adsorption capacity and selectivility for those organic compounds. We characterized the adsorption capability of the activated carbon fibers for benzene, toluene, acetone and methanol by BET specific surface area and pore size and micropore volume measurements. In the result of activation, the maximum value of BET specific surface area of the fibers was $1100\m^2$/g at $800^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes and $K_2$O was reduced actively in this condition. Their average pore size was 5.8~5.9$\AA$. The activated carbon fibers prepared in this work had high adsorption rate to saturation and the selectibility for the above organic compounds. The adsorbed amount of acetone and methanol(diameter of$ 4.3\AA$ and $4.4\AA$ respectively) which are smaller than micropore diameter in size was 43~49%, which was larger value than benzene and toluene(in the same diameter as $5.9\AA$).
In this paper, mesoporous only platinum electrode and micro pore platinum electrode with mesoporous Pt are fabricated and characterized on a silicon substrate to check their usability as enzymeless sensing electrodes for developing non-disposable glucose sensors integrated with silicon CMOS read out circuitry. Since most of electrochemical glucose sensors are disposable due to the use of the enzymes that are living creatures, these are limited to use in the in-vivo and continuous monitoring system applications. The proposed mesoporous Pt electrode with approximately 2.5nm in pore diameter and 150nm in height was fabricated by using a nonionic surfactant $C_{16}EO_8$ and an electroplating technique. The micro pore Pt electrode with mesoporous Pt means the mesoporous Pt electrode fabricated on top of micro pore arrayed Pt electrode with approximately $10{\mu}m$ in pore diameter and $80{\mu}m$ in height. The measured current responses at 10mM glucose solution of plane Pt, micro pore Pt, micro pore with mesoporus Pt, and mesoporous Pt electrodes are approximately $9.9nA/mm^2$, $92.4nA/mm^2$, $3320nA/mm^2$ and $44620nA/mm^2$, respectively. These data indicate that the mesoporous Pt electrode is much more sensitive than the other Pt electrodes. Thus, it is promising for non-disposable glucose sensor and electrochemical sensor applications.
Stirling engine is an external combustion engine, whose efficiency approaches that of Carnot engine with the help of a regenerator. The regenerator is a heat exchanger composed of porous medium, whose performance is dependent on the pore structure. Three types of pore structures are considered in the present study. They are wire screen, random wire and composite structure, i.e. a combination of wire screens with different hydraulic diameters. The porosity more highly affects the performance of a regenerator compared to the hydraulic diameter. The random wire can yield high effectiveness even at a high porosity. The composite mesh gives better performance when the hydraulic diameter decreases in the direction from hot side to cold side.
The purpose of tissue engineering is to repair or replace damaged tissues or organs by a combination of cells, scaffold, suitable biochemical and physio-chemical factors. Among the three components, the biodegradable scaffold plays an important role in cell attachment and migration. In this study, we designed 3D porous scaffold by Rapid Prototyping (RP) system and fabricated layer-by-layer 3D structure using Polycarprolactone (PCL) - one of the most flexible biodegradable polymer. Furthermore, the physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were evaluated by changing the pore size and the strand diameter of the scaffold. We changed nozzle diameter (strand diameter) and strand to strand distance (pore size) to find the effect on the mechanical property of the scaffold. And the surface morphology, inner structure and storage modulus of PCL scaffold were analyzed with SEM, Micro-CT and DMA.
In this study, we have manufactured the LHP(Loop Heat Pipe) with sintered metal wick and investigated the working characteristics of LHP experimentally.Water was used as a working fluid and fill charge rate was changed. LHP basically consist of the separated vapor/liquid channels, evaporator having sintered metal wick(effective pore diameter :$16{\sim}19{\mu}m$), and condenser cooled by water. The diameter of vapor/liquid line tube are 3.2mm/6.35mm, respectively. Heat transfer rate and thermal resistance was represented to study the basic characteristics of LHP at each conditions

Four activated carbons were produced by two-stage process as followings; semi-carbonization of indigenous biomass waste, i.e. cotton stalks, followed by chemical activation with KOH under various activation temperatures and chemical ratios of KOH to semi-carbonized cotton stalks (CCS). The surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter were evaluated by $N_2$-adsorption at 77 K. The surface morphology and oxygen functional groups were determined by SEM and FTIR, respectively. Batch equilibrium and kinetic studies were carried out by using a basic dye, methylene blue as a probe molecule to evaluate the adsorption capacity and mechanism over the produced carbons. The obtained activated carbon (CCS-1K800) exhibited highly microporous structure with high surface area of 950 $m^2/g$, total pore volume of 0.423 $cm^3/g$ and average pore diameter of 17.8 ${\AA}$. The isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption capacity of 222 mg/g for CCS-1K800. The kinetic data obtained at different concentrations were analyzed using a pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion equations. The pseudo-second-order model fitted better for kinetic removal of MB dye. The results indicate that such laboratory carbons could be employed as low cost alternative to commercial carbons in wastewater treatment.
