  • This paper is to present the performance data for improved direct setting method using tile bond for application of porcelain tile under 1 percent absorptance. For this purpose, improved direct setting method type 1 & 2(tile bond curing time 0, 24H) were compared with the conventional setting methods(including direct setting method and improved pressure setting method) in the sight of the adhesive stability of porcelain tile. It tested for tiles after 14, 28days under standard condition and severe conditions. The severe conditions were water immersion, heat ageing(70℃) and freeze-thaw cycle. On the basis of test results, the adhesive strength of direct setting method was lowest for the conventional setting methods. But improved direct setting method using tile bonds(A, B) came close to the result of improved pressure setting method using tile bonds.

  • Currently, polymer-based tile cement (Thin-bed method) and epoxy adhesive (Thick-bed method) are mainly used as tile adhesive for polishing and porcelain. In the case of epoxy adhesive, there is a low economic efficiency, there is a problem that the work efficiency is reduced by mixing the resin and the hardener. In particular, the epoxy contains a bisphenol A and amine component, there is a risk of workable disease when a worker is exposed to odor and harmful gases generated in the epoxy adhesive for a long time. Against this background, it is necessary to analyze the hazards of using epoxy adhesives indoors, and develop cementitious high performance tile adhesive products with significantly lower hazards than epoxy adhesives.

  • The suspension insulators are subjected to harsh environments in service for a long time. The long-term reliability of tile insulators is required for both mechanical and electrical performances. This study describes some basic performance tests and accelerated aging test by cool-heat cycling methods and thermal mechanical performance test methods on alumina porcelain insulators (new and aged) used for transmission line in KOREA. There was no fail in electrical and mechanical performance tests such as a high voltage strength, a flashover voltage, and an impact strength in all samples. But in the case of accelerating aging tests which have above 9$0^{\circ}C$ temperature gradient, fracture phenomena was happened by a thermal shock in tile aged sample(sample A) with low alumina porcelain body. It was indicated that sample A was more severely aged than other samples. According to results of HRB test and microstructural analysis, it was reasoned that insulator bodies with the matrix reinforced with alumina crystalline phase have advantages over the suppression of crack advance. And cool-heat aging and mechanical thermal ageing tests shows that a temperature gradient is more effective to accelerating than a cycling number.

  • In recently, polishing tile(porcelain homogeneous polished tile) was used in the construction field as a finishing material. But, there happened some problems such as tile exfoliation by construction condition in early ages. Also, in the dry wall system which used to lightweight wall, for use of polishing tile on dry wall, the examination of adhesive stability of polishing tile is needed. In this Paper, adhesive strength of Polishing tile was investigated by tile bond types on gypsum board and non asbestos board coated by tar-urethane and polymer modified cementitious waterproofing membrane(Series I). Then, the effect of heat stress and vibration was estimated on gypsum and non asbestos board(Series II).

  • A great amount of fly ash, which is a waste from a thermal power plant, has not been appropriately recycled until now. Landfill of flay ash causes environmental pollution and enormous economic costs. In this study, manufacturing of architectural ceramic tile was investigated replacing fly ash with clay raw material. The properties of porcelain tile was analyzed after manufacturing porcelain tile with mineral based glaze and fast firing process. In particular, the effect of the fly ash addition on the properties of ceramic tile was investigated by increasing the amount of limestone addition. Porcelain tile with fly ash showed excellent bending strength, water absorption, warping and abrasion resistance. However, a significant decrease in durability was observed through the autoclave test. Addition of limestone increased the water absorption, twisting and hydration expansion of the ceramic tile, but it was confirmed that the durability of the ceramic tile with fly ash was greatly improved. In conclusion, recycled architectural ceramic tiles, which can meet domestic construction standards, could be manufactured with the addition of fly ash and limestone.

  • Over the past decade, the feasibility of using ink-jet printing for the decoration of porcelain tiles has been explored, and significant advances have been made regarding the technologies underlying printing system and materials. An ink-jet printing system for porcelain tiles has many advantages compared with a conventional printing system, including the following: (1) it is a digital process; (2) it uses non-contact printing; (3) it allows random image generation; (4) it is a highly efficient process (reduced production cost); (5) it offers massive and continuous production; and (6) it uses inorganic pigment colorants. For these reasons, ink-jet printing systems for porcelain tiles have been commercialized and are at present rapidly spreading toceramics-leading countries such as Spain, Italy, China and Japan. We also developed a proprietary system involving a piezo-electric drop-on-demand method and an ink-circulation step. The resolution of this system is greater than 360 dpi after a heat treatment and the maximum printable width is 600 mm, even when setting the printing head unit with four digital colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). In addition, we systematically developed ceramic colorant-containing inks and tile-printing technology applicable to our ink-jet printing system.

  • This paper is to present the performance data for pressure setting method using some tile bonds for application on the Ondol-Heating floor system. For this purpose, powder and liquid tile bonds(Organic.Inorganic mixed tile bonds) were compared with the conventional tile cement for pressure setting method in the sight of the adhesive stability of porcelain tile. It tested for tiles after 14, 28days under standard condition and severe conditions. The severe conditions were water immersion and heat ageing($70^{\circ}C$). Another experimental factors concerned tile bond properties such as mixing ratio(in case of using liquid admixture), open time, which are supposed to affect the tensile strength of tile, were studied and discussed through the experiments.

  • In this study, flexural strength and tile adhesion strength were evaluated by using a mortar, dry mortar and an epoxy resin reinforced mortar to examine the adhesion performance by reinforcing the epoxy resin adhesive. As a result, it was clearly confirmed that the effect of improving the adhesion strength by reinforcing the epoxy resin adhesive regardless of the type of tile, and in particular, when applying the epoxy resin adhesive to the porcelain and polishing tiles, it is judged that sufficient adhesion performance can be secured.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate three kinds of slipmeters (BOT, BPT, English XL) used on-site floor with ASTM F2508 which is comprised of four different standard surfaces(polished granite, glazed porcelain, vinyl composite tile ;VCT, and ceramic tile). ASTM F2508 has two criteria that decide which slipmeter is appropriate or not. The evaluated slipmeters were dreg sled, articulated sturt, and pendulum strike type. The test results revealed that two kinds of slipmeters(BOT, BPT) successfully ranked all four standard surfaces and differentiated among standard surfaces with varying degrees of slipperiness. Nevertheless, the measured value with BOT on the VCT, which was reported as slippery floor in previous study, was higher than its threshold(0.6). Although some slipmeter satisfy two criteria of ASTM F2508, they can underestimate the slip potential. So, another criteria is needed so as to reduce this problem. English XL couldn't properly measure slipperiness under the two kind of floors(glazed porcelain, VCT). So the slider of English XL was modified in order to meet two criteria of ASTM F2508.
