  • The purpose of this study is to discuss the economic outlook of dentistry in relation to pessimistic economic perspectives of Korea and to present subsequent solutions. The expectation of the future economic growth rate of Korea is gloom with not only a love rate of increase in population due to an aging society and a low birthrate, but also with a declined number of productive populations. Moreover, the future of dentistry in Korea is obscure. Even with a dwindling population growth, an average of 750 new dentists graduate from dental school every year. The 30-35% of the new graduates practice in public hospitals; and 65~70% of them open up their own private practices, However, unlike in the past, the occurrence of dental practice bankruptcy has been increasing with a competitive environment, excessive initial investment, knowledgeable patients, and etc. Therefore, it is essential to re-evaluate the number of new graduates. Also, it is necessary to supply a greater number of public hospitals with newly licensed dentists, who have various clinic experience, participate in research and development, and experience appropriate hospital management skills.

  • This paper intends to examine the extent of the fiscal contribution of immigrants to Korea. According to this analysis, the aim is to derive implications pertaining to the direction of Korea's immigration policy as a response to fiscal problems caused by population aging. For this purpose, a macroeconomic model is designed to measure the lifetime net fiscal contribution of immigrants in Korea by visa type, age, and other characteristics. According to this analysis, the sum of the lifetime fiscal contribution for all immigrants in Korea is negative. This implies that immigration policy reforms that increase the inflow size while maintaining the current structure of the foreign population characteristics can rather worsen Korea's fiscal problems. This finding suggests that immigration policy reform may exacerbate Korea's fiscal soundness if it simply targets the maintenance of the numerical balance of the demographic structure.

  • The share of the population that is aging is growing rapidly. In an aging society, technologies and interventions that delay the aging process are of great interest. Dietary restriction (DR) is the most reproducible and effective nutritional intervention tested to date for delaying the aging process and prolonging the health span in animal models. Preventive effects of DR on age-related diseases have also been reported in human. In addition, highly conserved signaling pathways from small animal models to human mediate the effects of DR. Recent evidence has shown that the immune system is closely related to the effects of DR, and functions as a major mechanism of DR in healthy aging. This review discusses the effects of DR in delaying aging and preventing age-related diseases in animal, including human, and introduces the molecular mechanisms that mediate these effects. In addition, it reports scientific findings on the relationship between the immune system and DR-induced longevity. The review highlights the role of immunity as a potential mediator of the effects of DR on longevity, and provides insights into healthy aging in human.

  • Effects of MgO or $R_2O_3$(R:Dy, Ho, Yb) on the capacitance aging behavior of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) based on $BaTiO_3$ dielectrics under DC electrical fields has been studied. At a DC field of 1 $V{/\mu}m$, the capacitance of MLCC specimens dropped immediately in a very short period (<10 s, the first stage) and then decreased continuously with time (the second stage). Mn doping significantly increased the aging rate in the second stage. The addition of MgO or $R_2O_3$ notably decreased the second stage aging rate of Mn-doped specimens. Yb doping gives rise to the lowest aging rate in the second stage, which is due to the larger population of defect dipoles associated with oxygen vacancies.

  • The average life span is expanded due to the development of modem society, material and cultural life and increasing level of public health. This means that the aging society is rapidly progressing. Geniatric diseases also have increased due to increasing of the aged population. Along with an increase of the aged patient, the anti-aging, prevention of geniatric disease and quality of life is tending high on social concern and medical issues. Many reports showed the evidence to the positive anti-aging effect of Oriental medicine. Qigong therapy, a kind of Oriental medicine, has been used to prevent aging and life prolongation with positive effect for many thousand years. Therefore, qigong practice is popular and common to middle age and old age in China.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the similarities and differences of elements of successful aging in Western and Korean society using a background of time and dominant values of each society. Content analysis of concepts and components of 'successful aging' was performed based on 12 Korean articles and 23 Western articles. The major findings were: (1) The studies of successful aging accomplished since 2001 and the studies that explore the elements of successful aging perceived by the elderly mentioned diverse elements as essential to successful aging. (2) There were both common and distinct components of successful aging in Western and Korean society. Some of the essential components for successful aging were commonly accepted, but others were varied and unique, reflecting the period of experience and cultural values. These results could be used to better understand unique successful aging of the Korean elderly, as well as to establish a basis of intervention that meets the specific demands of this population.

  • There are little program and services that have been developed to address the health and health care needs of vulnerable women. The access for their timely and appropriate health care and health promotion services have been a increasing concern. The purpose of this study was to suggest health promotion program for vulnerable women with collaboration of women's NGOs. At the first part of this study, we reviewed a conceptual framework for identifying vulnerable population, and issues regarding health problems, unmet needs, policies and programs that have been developed to address their need. In second part, we focused on investigating the role, subjects and activities of women's NGOs and their capacity for health promotion program. The last part of this study proposed health promotion programme with integrating above two parts of study. In describing what type of health promotion program available in women's NCOs, eight major programs and services were summarized. 1. Direct health promotion program and collaborating program with other services. 2. Education and training for empowerment of vulnerable women 3. Organizing mutual support system such as self-help group 4. Community supports. Vulnerable women living at home may benefit from linkage to community services as much as women living in facility 5. Organizing collaboration system with program for economic support and job training, social rehabilitation 6. Trainer's training for practitioners in NGOs 7. • In many countries the demographics clearly informs us that an aging population represent a serious problem. To this extent senior citizens welfare does matter it has developed into a public debate and genuine concern. it seems that the social issues are focused on how the socity views the social welfare policies. In a modern welfare state where the emphasis lies in pursing a high standard of living and thereby high quality of life. This does not cover the very well the old people in society, but the government clearly carries an obligation to look after and care for the retired & old people in the society. This obligation the social and economic impact that an old person faces as he/she grows old. it is important ensure that their lives carries a meaning and that they as a group will not be estranged from the mainstream of society just because they are considered to be part of the aging population. The key issues that must be addressed are 1) The impact of reduced spending power from less income. a lower income stream; 2) increasing health problems and costs; 3) the natural degradation of ones physical & mental powers; 4) and thereby an isolation from the public in general. So clearly the social policy related to the old people in society should be developed with the consent of what they believe is important to them. To ensure their minimum income level that a beneficiary of an old person's pension will receive, the monthly pension should be reflected by the official price index and be adjusted accordingly. by making the job market open for the senior citizens, expending the mandatory retirement age, give companiesincentives to hire senior citizens, there maybe an opportunity to extend to the aging population the possibility to continue to participate in the society at large.
