Design of a Medical Reactor Generating High Quality Neutron Beams for BNCT

  • Boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT) is a binary treatment modality that can selectively irradiate tumor tissue. More is known now about the radiation biology of BNCT, which has reemerged as a potentially useful method for preferential irradiation of tumors. We design a square reactor (that can easily be reconfigured into polygonal reactors as the need arises) with four slab type assemblies to produce high quality epithermal neutron beans and thermal neutron beams jot use in neutron capture therapy. With a low operating power of 300kW, the heat generated in the core can be removed by natural convection through a pool of tight water. The proposed design in this study could be constructed for a dedicated clinical BNCT facility that would operate very safely.

Fluid effect on the modal characteristics of a square tank

  • Tanks are used extensively in many engineering areas for spent fuel pool structures at nuclear power plants or for water storage tanks in bulk carriers. To ensure the structural integrity of such tanks when under dynamic loads, modal characteristics such as natural frequencies, participation factors and mode shapes should be known. Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of a square tank by the finite element method. This approach can be used with subsequent dynamic analyses such as a response spectrum analysis or a harmonic analysis. Finite element models are prepared to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes, which are easy to find the modal characteristics of a fluid-filled square tank. The effects of the fluid contained in the tank and the boundary conditions at top and bottom ends on the modal characteristics are assessed by several finite element analyses.

  • This study was designed to develop and validate an isocratic reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic(HPLC) method for the quantitation of sobrerol in drug preparations, and obtain the data pool that can be used in the revision of pharmacopoeia. The separation of sobrerol and the other compounds (S-carboxymethylcysteine, acetaminophen, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and sobrerol degradants) was achieved in a C18 column with an acetonitrile-methanol-water(24.5:10.5:65.0) mobile phase.   • One of the factors influencing the climate around Korea is the oceanic-atmospheric variability in the tropical region between the eastern Indian and the western Pacific Oceans. Lack of knowledge about the air-sea interaction in the tropical Indo-Pacific region continues to make it problematic forecasting the ocean climate in the East Asia. The 'Tropical Indo-Pacific water transport and ecosystem monitoring EXperiment (TIPEX)' is a program for monitoring the ocean circulation variability between Pacific and Indian Oceans and for improving the accuracy of future climate forecasting. The main goal of the TIPEX program is to quantify the climate and ocean circulation change between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. The contents of the program are 1) to observe the mixing process of different water masses and water transport in the eastern Indian and the western Pacific, 2) to understand the large-scale oceanic-climatic variation including El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)/Warm Pool/Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO)/Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and 3) to monitor the biogeochemical processes, material flux, and biological changes due to the climate change. In order to effectively carry out the monitoring program, close international cooperation and the proper co-work sharing of tasks between China, Japan, Indonesia, and India as well as USA is required.

Investigation on Minimum Film Boiling Point of Highly Heated Vertical Metal Rod in Aqueous Surfactant Solution (계면활성제 수용액 내 고온 수직 금속봉의 최소막비등점에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, experiments were conducted on the MFB(minimum film boiling) point of highly heated vertical metal rod quenched in aqueous surfactant solution at various temperature conditions. The aqueous Triton X-100 solution(100 wppm) and pure water were used as the liquid pool. Their temperatures ranged from $77^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. A stainless steel vertical rod of initial center temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ was used as a test specimen. In both liquid pools, as the liquid temperature decreased, the time to reach the MFB point decreased with a parallel increase in the temperature and heat flux of the MFB point. However, over the whole present temperature range, in the aqueous Triton X-100 solution, the time to reach the MFB point was longer, while the temperature and heat flux of the MFB point were reduced when compared with pure water. Based on the present experimental data, this study proposed the empirical correlations to predict the MFB temperature of a high temperature vertical metal rod in pure water and in aqueous Triton X-100 solution.

The Effect of Cattle Slurry on N-Dynamics and $NO_3$ Leaching in Pasture Mixtures (목초 생산성과 액상분뇨 시용이 토양의 질소동태와 $NO_3$ 용탈에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of the study is to describe the fate and transformation of nitrogen in grassland ecosystems. Field experiments were conducted using sandyloam soil under variabling conditions: Zen, fertilization, reduced slurry application(l20kg N $ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$), usual sluny application (240 kg N $ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$).Soil water samples were gathered with 120cm ceramic cups with initial pressure of 0.5 bar. Samples were collected twice a month and analysed for NO, colormetrically. Percolation was calculated as the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, and leaching as the product of percolation and nitrate content of the water h m the ceramic cups. The N$H_4$-N content in soil had no significant effect on slurry application, but high slurry application on grassland resulted in high N$O_3$-N content in soil. The NO, concentration in soil water was remarkably variable during the year. The average N$O_3$, concentration during experiment became the lowest(8.5 mg/e ) without slurry application and highest with 240kOa cattle sluny(25.3 mg4 ). For each of the three different amounts of cattle sluny applied (0, 120, and 240kOa), the amount of N$O_3$-N leached per year were 12, 23 and 29kg/ha respectively. On grassland under the climatic conditions of Allgau showed enormous nitrate leaching, which has a p a t potential of polluting the ground water. The high pool of mineral N in the soil are the source for N$O_3$ leaching. The leaching of N$O_3$ cannot be avoided completely, but minimized by optimizing N fertilization rate.

Effect of the Electroacupuncture at ST36 in TMT-induced Memory Deficit Rats

  • In order to the neuroprotective effect of electroacupuncture (EA), the present study examined the effects of electroacupuncture inacupoint ST36 (Stomach 36) on trimethyltin chloride (TMT)-induced cognitive impairments rat using the Morris water maze (MWM) task and immunohistochemistry staining. The rats were randomly divided into the following groups: naive rat (Normal), TMT injection rat (Control), TMT injection + EA treated rat inacupoint ST36 (ST36) and TMT injection + EA treated rat in non-acupoint, base of tail (Non-AC). Electroacupuncture (2Hz, 2mA, and 10 minutes)was applied either to the acupuncture point ST36 or the nonacupuncture point in the tail for the last 14 days. In the water maze test, the animals were trained to find a platform in a fixed position during 4d and then received 60s probe trial on the $5^{th}$ day following removal of platform from the pool. Rats with TMT injection showed impaired learning and memory of the tasks and treatment with EA in acupoint ST36 (P<0.05) produced a significant improvement in escape latency to find the platform after $2^{nd}$ day and retention trial in the Morris water maze. Consistent with behavioral data, treatment with EA in acupoint ST36 also significantly increased expression of Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) immunoreactive neurons in the hippocampus compared to the Control group. These results demonstrated that EA in acupoint ST36 has a protective effect against TMT-induced neuronal and cognitive impairments. The present study suggests that EA in acupoint ST36 might be useful in the treatment of TMT-induced learning and memory deficit.

  • During the late phase of severe accidents of light water reactors, a porous debris bed is expected to develop on the bottom of the flooded reactor cavity after breakup of the melt in water. The geometrical configuration, i.e., internal and external characteristics, of the debris bed is significant for the adequate assessment of the coolability of the relocated corium. The internal structure of a debris bed was investigated experimentally using the DAVINCI (Debris bed research Apparatus for Validation of the bubble-Induced Natural Convection effect Issue) test facility. Particle sedimentation under the influence of a two-phase natural convection flow due to the decay heat in the debris bed was simulated by dropping various sizes of particles into a water vessel with air bubble injection from the bottom. Settled particles were collected and sieved to obtain the particle mass, size distribution in the radial and axial positions, and the bed porosity and permeability. The experimental results showed that the center part of the particle bed tended to have larger particles than the peripheral area. For the axial distribution, the lower layer had a higher fraction of larger particles. As the sedimentation progressed, the size distribution in the upper layers can shift to larger sizes because of the higher vapor generation rate and stronger flow intensity.

  • A water mist system was considered as a possible alternative to a gaseous suppression system that can not prevent re-ignition after fire extinguishment for a power transformer room. This study deals with the fire suppression capability of the water mist systems. High-and low-pressure water mist systems were examined to compare efficiency of both systems. The power transformer examined in this study occupied about $7\%$ of a $10m\times10m\times$ transformer room. Full-scale suppression tests were performed for six different fire scenarios: two spray fires, three pool fires and one cascade fire. The fire suppression test results demonstrated that the high-pressure system was superior to the low-pressure system, especially considering oxygen depletion and the ambient temperature distribution.

Characteristics of vegetation structure and habitat of Mankyua chejuense(Ophioglssaceae), endangered plant in Korea (멸종위기 식물 제주고사리삼의 입지와 식생구조의 특징에 대한 연구)

  • In order to characterize the habitat trait and vegetation structure of M. chejuense(Ophioglssaceae), endangered plant in Korea, we set 12 permanent quadrats in Jocheon-Sunhyul Gotzawal Wetland Region of Jeju Island, and surveyed the temporal pools, vegetation structure and counted the population size of the endemic rare plant. M. chejuense distributed in the vernal pools with a variety of shape, area of 150-$400m^2$, depth of 0.4-2.0m and slope of 3-$10^{\circ}$, at altitude of 88-165m in lowland area in Gotjawal Wetland Region, Jeju Island. The soil has a thin layer and high water content all the seasons. The population appeared with a density range of 1-423/pool in the boundary area of the wetlands under higher tree coverages(80-100%) in the deciduous forest communities. Vegetation wsa classified into five plant communities such as Ulmus parvifolia community, Cudrania tricuspidata community, Rosa multiflora community, Ardisia japonica community, Ophiopogon japonicus community. These results means that M. chejuense potentially has a shortage to evergreen plant succession, litter accumulation and water drainage, thus it is need to sustainable wetland environmental condition in the deciduous forest community for its sounded conservation.
