In this study, flow patterns in the ice-harbor fishway were analyzed according to fluctuations of the upstream water level, an increase of weir interval, and the presence or absence of orifices using a three-dimensional commercial numerical model, Flow-3D. In order to prove the suitability of the numerical simulation results, the flow velocity and flow rate at the exit of the fishway were observed using a 3D ultrasonic velocimetry on an actual ice-harbor fishway installed downstream of the Daegok bridge in Gyeongan-Cheon. Four types of turbulence modules can be selected for the Flow-3D model. As a result of verification with observation data, the RNG model best described the flow characteristics in the ice-harbor fishway. The velocity structure in the fishway according to fluctuations of the upstream water level was simulated. The results showed that the plunging flow and the streaming flow were mixed at the lowest water level. When the water level increased about 10 cm or more from the lowest water level, the plunging flow disappeared in all pools and only the streaming flow occurred. Contrary to expectations, even when the water level is rose a little, the flow simply occurred mainly on the streaming flow. If the interval between the weirs is increased, both the plunging flow and the streaming flow are showed continued even if the water level rises. In addition, compared to the case where there are no orifices at the bottom of the weirs, the plunging flow tends to be generated in several pools. It is necessary to prevent blocking orifices through active management so that various flow patterns in the fishway can be generated in multiple pools.
Removal of decay heat from an operating reactor during a prolonged station blackout condition is a big concern for reactor designers, especially after the recent Fukushima accident. In the case of a prolonged station blackout condition, heat removal is possible only by passive means since no pumps or active systems are available. Keeping this in mind, the AHWR has been designed with many passive safety features. One of them is a passive means of removing decay heat with the help of Isolation Condensers (ICs) which are submerged in a big water pool called the Gravity Driven Water Pool (GDWP). The ICs have many tubes in which the steam, generated by the reactor core due to the decay heat, flows and condenses by rejecting the heat into the water pool. After condensation, the condensate falls back into the steam drum of the reactor. The GDWP tank holds a large amount of water, about 8000 $m^3$, which is located at a higher elevation than the steam drum of the reactor in order to promote natural circulation. Due to the recent Fukushima type accidents, it has been a concern to understand and evaluate the capability of the ICs to remove decay heat for a prolonged period without escalating fuel sheath temperature. In view of this, an analysis has been performed for decay heat removal characteristics over several days of an AHWR by ICs. The computer code RELAP5/MOD3.2 was used for this purpose. Results indicate that the ICs can remove the decay heat for more than 10 days without causing any bulk boiling in the GDWP. After that, decay heat can be removed for more than 40 days by boiling off the pool inventory. The pressure inside the containment does not exceed the design pressure even after 10 days by condensation of steam generated from the GDWP on the walls of containment and on the Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) tubes. If venting is carried out after this period, the decay heat can be removed for more than 50 days without exceeding the design limits.
A total of 60 samples were collected from 35 swimming pools in Beijing, China, and the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia were investigated. The results showed that 16.7% and 15.0% of samples were positive for Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts, respectively, with a mean concentration of 0.30 oocysts/10 L and 0.27 cysts/10 L. The oocysts and cysts were found to have higher rates of occurrence in August than in May. Genotyping confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium hominis, C. parvum, and Giardia assemblages A and B, all of which were associated with human infections. The predominant species/assemblages were C. hominis and Giardia assemblage A. Analyses of the relationships between parasite oocysts/cysts, indicator bacteria, and physical-chemical parameters revealed that there was no correlation between 2 parasites and fecal bacterial indicators, whilst there was a significant correlation between protozoa and urea concentration, which indicates that urea concentration rather than fecal bacterial indicators might be an appropriate index for chlorine-resistant protozoa in swimming pools. This study provides useful information to improve the safety of swimming pool water and deduce the risk of protozoan infections.
This study deals with hydraulic characteristics and their effects on upstream migration of fish by the weir type in a pool-weir fishway, and presents an optimal type of weir for an easy upstream migration. Experiment was performed to estimate hydraulic conditions by the weir type and to determine which type was good. The results showed that a rectangular weir with a small rectangular notch installed by a zig-zag type was preferable to a simple weir with no notch or to a trapezoidal weir, since it makes possible for upstream migration even when a water level draws down and moreover, it makes falling flow through a notch which facilitates upstream migration. It was proposed that the notch must be designed that the flow situation may keep the streaming flow so long as the maximum flow velocity does not exceed the critical swiming velocity, i.e., the dimensionless flow rate may exist whthin the range of 0.27 and 0.41.
Hyporheic zone is a region beneath and alongside a stream, river, or lake bed, where there is mixing of shallow groundwater and surfacewater. Hyporheic exchange controls a variety of physical, biogeochemical and thermal processes, and provides unique ecotones in a aquatic ecosystem. Field and experimental observations, and modeling studies indicate that hyporheic exchange is mainly in response to pressure gradients driven by the geomorphological features of stream beds. In the reach scale of a stream, pool-riffle structures dominate the exchange patterns. Flow over a pool-riffle sequence develops recirculation zones and stagnation points, and this flow structures make irregular pressure gradient which is driving force of the hyporheic exchange. In this study, 3 D hydro-dynamic model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the surface water and Darcy's Law and the continuity equation for ground water. The two sets of equations are coupled via the pressure distribution along the interface. Simulation results show that recirculation zones and stagnation points in the pool-riffle structures dominantly control the upwelling and downwelling patterns. With decrease of recirculation zones, length of donwelling zone formed in front of riffles is reduced and position of maximum downwelling point moves downward. The numerical simulation could successfully predict the behavior of hyporheic exchange and contribute the field study, river management and restoration.
This study was to investigate the quality characteristics of sourdough bread made with 4 kinds of kamut sour starter. Kamut sour starters were made according to dough yield of sour starter and yeast adding on sour starter. We exmanined pH level, fermentation rate, specific volume, CrumbScan, moisture content, color value, texture analyzer, shelf-life test and sensory evaluation for observing quality characteristics of sourdough bread. From the results of pH measurement, kamut sourdough breads had lower pH value in dough and crumb pH than CON. In the experiment of dough's fermentation rate, CON had the rapidest fermentation rate among the samples initially, but the experimental groups also expanded as much as CON grew in spite of its slow fermentation. Specific volume and CrumbScan results suggested that CON had the largest volume. In addition, CM and TM had smaller volume than Pool and Biga. The sample that had the highest moisture content was Pool because its sour starter had the most amount of water. In color value test, CON had lighter crumb and crust color than other specimens. As a result of the TPA and shelf-life tests, CON had the softest hardness after 24 hours. However, Pool had similar hardness with CON after 72 hours. The result of the acceptance test of sourdough breads indicated that people prefered Pool and Biga to TM and CM. Difference test showed similar results with prior experiments. As the final outcome, Poolish was chosen as the optimal formula for kamut sour starter.

A new empirical correlation was developed to identify the effect of an inclination angle on pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of a tube submerged in the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. Through the experiments and the survey of published results 431 data points were obtained and the nonlinear least square method was used as a regression technique. The heat flux of the tube($0{\sim}120kW/m^2$), inclination angle($0^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$), and the length divided by the diameter of a tube(18~42.52) were selected as major parameters. The newly developed correlation well predicts the experimental data within ${\pm}18%$, with some exceptions.

A study on passive cooling systems for concrete containment of advanced pressurized water reactors has been performed. The proposed passive containment cooling system (PCCS) consist of (1) condenser units located inside containment, (2) a steam condensing pool outside containment at higher elevation, and (3) downcommer/riser piping systems which provide coolant flow paths. During an accident causing high containment pressure and temperature, the steam/air mixture in containment is condensed on the outer surface of condenser tubes transferring the heat to coolant flowing inside tubes. The coolant transfers the heat to the steam condensing pool via natural circulation due to density difference. This PCCS has the following characteristic: (1) applicable to concrete containment system, (2) no limitation in plant capacity expansion, (3) efficient steam condensing mechanism (dropwise or film condensation at the surface of condenser tube), and (4) utilization of a fully passive mechanism. A preliminary conceptual design work has been done based on steady-state assumptions to determine important design parameter including the elevation of components and required heat transfer area of the condenser tube. Assuming a decay power level of 2%, the required heat transfer area for 1,000MWe plant is assessed to be about 2,000 ㎡ (equivalent to 1,600 of 10 m-long, 4-cm-OD tubes) with the relative elevation difference of 38 m between the condenser and steam condensing pool and the riser diameter of 0.62 m.

Buoyancy-assisted melting of an unconstrained ice in an isothermally heated horizontal enclosure was numerically analyzed in a range of wall temperatures encompassing the density inversion point. The problem as posed here involves two physically distinct domains each of which has its own scales and respective heat transfer mode. These two domains join at the junction where the liquid squeezed out of the film region flushes into the lower melt pool. Both of these domains have been treated separately in the literature by a patching technique which invokes several, otherwise unnecessary, assumptions. The present study eliminates successfully such a superfluous procedure by treating the film and lower melt pool regions as a single domain. As a result of this efficient solution procedure, the interaction of the water stream ejected at the junction and the natural convection in the melt pool could be clarified for different wall temperatures. Though limited by two-dimensionality, the present results conformed indirectly the earlier reported transition of the flow pattern, as the wall temperature was increased over the density inversion point. The transient evolution of the melting surface, the time rate of change in melt volume fraction, the local and temporal variation of the heat transfer coefficients are analyzed and presented.

Extensive researches toward pool boiling characteristics have been widely investigated. However, the correct understanding of its boiling crisis by Critical Heat Flux (CHF) phenomenon during steady and transient heat transfer as a fundamental database for designing heat generation systems is still need to be clarified. The pool boiling CHFs were investigated to clarify the generalized phenomena of transition to film boiling at transient condition. The CHFs were measured on 1.0 mm diameter horizontal cylinder of platinum for exponential heat generation rates with various periods for saturated liquids at atmospheric pressure. The incipience of boiling processes was completely different depending on pre-pressurization. Also, the dependence of pre-pressure in transient CHFs changed due to the wettability of boiling liquids. The trend of typical CHFs were clearly divided into the first, second and third groups for long, short and intermediate periods, respectively. By the effect of pre-pressurization, the boiling incipience mechanism was replaced from that by active cavities entraining vapor to that by the HSN in originally flooded cavies.
