Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

Anorthite forming glass frits in amounts up to 25 vol% of the silver powder were added to improve the adhesion between the conductor pattern formed by thick film photoimageable process and the low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) substrate. The sheet resistance of the conductor pattern was raised from 0.13 ${\Omega}/{\square}$ to 2.25 ${\Omega}/{\square}$ as the volume percentage of glass frit increased up to 25 vol%. The adhesion strength was improved with this glass frit increase, but it decreased when the glass content exceeded 20 vol% which are possibly attributed to the liquid pool effect and the reduced fracture toughness in the interface between conductor and LTCC layer. The shrinkage of the width of the conductor pattern decreased with the addition of glass contents.

In this study, fire behavior for subway coach fire in the 1/10 reduced scale model is analyzed using numerical analysis method (FDS). The size of the reduced model coach is 1.9 m long, 0.290 m high and 0.235 m. The simulation is carried out only one-sided four doors of the coach are opened. A fire source is the n-heptane pool fire with a mean heat release rate 2.33 kW. Smoke temperature, heat release rate and mass loss rate for the model are calculated.
Augmentation of CHF by ultrasonic is experimentally studied under subcooling pool boiling condition. Experiment is carried out for downward-facing plate with and without the ultrasonic. The working fluid is distilled water. Experimental apparatus is composed of a bath, power supply, test section, ultrasonic generator, DAQ system. Experiment is performed with the subcooling temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ and the inclined angle of $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, 90. From the experimental results, it is found that ultrasonic effect enhances CHF of the downward-facing plate. As increasing the degree of subcooling, the rate of CHF increase is enhanced. As increasing the inclined angle, the rate of CHF increase decreases. Also, we can see that the heat transfer mechanism of CHF augmentation is closely connected with the dynamic behavior of bubble generation and departure.

In the steel industries, direct rolling process for production of strip from molten metal has been investigated to simplify processes, to minimize energy consumption, and to improve quality of the strip. In this study, two kinds of practicable scale cooling rollers are proposed. And heat transfer analysis of pool region and cooling roller considering flow of molten metal and roll rotation respectively using the finite element method are performed to obtain the proper initial condition and to observe cooling characteristics of cooling roller. From the results, variations of solidification final points and temperature distribution in roller are observed quantitatively according to roll rotation.

The analysis for the coolability of the reactor cavity in typical Korean 1000 MWe Nuclear Unit under severe accidents is performed using MELCOR 1.8.3 code. The key parameters molten core-concrete interaction(MCCI) such as melt temperature, concrete ablation history and gas generation are investigated. Total twenty cases are selected according to ejected debris fraction and coolant mass, The ablation rate of concrete decreases as mass of the melt decreases and coolant mass increases. Heat loss from molten pool to coolant is comparable to total decay heat, so concrete ablation is delayed until water is absent and crust begins to remove. Also, overpressurization due to non-condensible gases generated during corium and concrete interacts can cause to additional risk of containment failure. It is concluded that flooded reactor cavity condition is very important to minimize the cavity ablation and pressure load by non-condensible gases on containment.
This paper presents a numerical model of multi phase flow of the mixtures of molten material-liquid-vapor, particularly in thermal nonequilibrium. It is a two-dimensional, transient, three-fluid model in Eulerian coordinates. The equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method that implicitly couples the rates of phase changes, momentum, and energy exchange to determine the pressure, density, and velocity fields. To examine the model's ability to predict an experimental data, calculations have been performed for tests of pouring hot particles and molten material into a water pool. The predictions show good agreement with the experimental data. It appears, however, that the interfacial heat transfer and breakup of molten material need improved models that can be applied to such high temperature, high pressure, multi phase flow conditions.
Laser melting problems with deformed substrates are investigated by axisymmetric numerical simulations. Source-based method is used to solve the energy equation, and the momentum equations are solved in the liquid domain with SIMPLER algorithm. Using a laser beam with a top-hat heat flux distribution, this study is performed to examine the effect of surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force on the melt pool during laser melting. Surface temperature decreases with increasing surface deformation, while surface velocity increases. It is found that surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force have a very significant effect on heat transfer and fluid flow during laser melting.

The real scale fire suppression test inside a road tunnel were carried out for water spray systems. The dimension of the tunnel is 7.5m in height and 11.6m in width. 3 different water spray nozzle systems with low operating pressure less than 3.5 bar were used in the experiment. Two types of fires were tested. One is a $1.4m^2$ heptane pool fire and the other is a 2000CC passenger car fire. From the experiment, the spray densities of tested systems were about $6.0\;l/min/m^2$ which is currunt domestic guideline. Although all the systems cannot extinguish the tested fires, it was found that they can reduce the tunnel temperature and have a capability to control and suppress the tested fire.
According to the improvement of PC performance, it is expected that calorific value, which causes PC to malfunction, is increased. Therefore, the development of new cooling system is recently required. As the method to solve this problem, we applied loop heat pipe to PC cooling system. The advantage of the loop heat pipe is that it has a small size, light weight, simple shape, long life and it has a good performance on heat transfer, no-noise, wide range of applicable temperature and no supply of power from the outside. It is confirmed that loop heat pipe reduces thermal resistance and has a good performance on PC cooling.
