Reactive Extrusion of Starch-g-Polyacrylonitrile in the Preparation of Absorbent Materials

  • A new method for the graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch is presented. Graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch and the subsequent hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution to prepare absorbents is well known. This process has been utilized to produce the commercial product, Super Slurper. In a typical batch process, ~5% starch in water mixture is gelatinized at $95^{\circ}C$ under stirring for 1 hour then cooled to room temperature. The graft polymerization itself is carried out for approximately 2 hours at $25~30^{\circ}C$ on the gelatinized starch by eerie ion initiation. In this study, graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch via a reactive extrusion process which is a continuous, efficient process is described. Initial concentration of starch in water is 35% and the reaction temperatures are between $50~80^{\circ}C$. However, the most significant difference in the reactive extrusion process is the short time in which the graft polymerization takes place. Preliminary results on the properties of graft polymerization products obtained from the reactive extrusion process are compared to those obtained from the batch process as well as the absorbency of the hydrolyzed samples. Absorbent material has also been prepared by sequential grafting and saponification in the extruder followed by a 2 hour heat treatment of the extrudate in an air circulated oven at $100^{\circ}C$.

비선형 예측제어 알고리즘을 이용한 회분식 중합 반응기의 온도제어 (Temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor using nonlinear predictive control algorithm)

  • Nonlinear unified predictive control(UPC) algorithm was applied to the temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor for polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA). Before the polymerization reaction is initiated, the parameters of the process model are determined by the recursive least squares(RLS) method. During the reaction, nonlinearities due to generation of heat of reaction and variation of heat transfer coefficients are predicted through the nonlinear model developed. These nonlinearities are added to the process output from the linear process model. And then, the predicted process output is used to calculate the control output sequence. The performance of nonlinear control algorithm was verified by simulation and compared with that of the linear unified predictive control algorithm. In the experiment of a batch PMMA polymerization, nonlinear unified predictive control was implemented to regulate the temperature of the reactor, and the validity of the nonlinear model was verified through the experimental results. The performance of the nonlinear controller turned out to be superior to that of the linear controller for tracking abrupt changes in setpoint.

Comparative Study of Polymerization Environment for Hydrogel Ophthalmic Lens

  • This study is carried out to evaluate the commercial feasibility of the room temperature and thermal polymerization method as a lens manufacturing method. All samples are found to be transparent after polymerization, thereby indicating that their physical and surface properties are suitable for hydrogel ophthalmic lenses. The optical and physical properties of the lenses are compared. The water content of the samples that are prepared via a room temperature polymerization process decreases with the addition of MMA as compared to the water content of the samples that are prepared via thermal polymerization. When MMA and DMA are used as an additive for improving functionality, the wettability of the lenses increases. By measuring the AFM, the surface roughness is shown to improve more than MMA and DMA. Therefore, it is judged to be an appropriate process for manufacturing hydrogel lenses with high functionality.

비닐아세테이트 중합공정에서 폭주반응 위험성 평가 (Hazard Evaluation of Runaway Reaction in the Vinyl Acetate Polymerization Process)

  • The risk assessment of thermal behavior and runaway reaction cased by an exothermic batch process in manufacture of the vinyl acetate resin are described in the present paper. The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk of runaway reaction with operating parameters such as a reaction inhibitor, reaction temperature and a mount of methanol charged in the vinyl acetate polymerization process. The experiments were performed by a sort of calorimetry with the Multimax reactor system as a screening tool to investigate runaway reaction. From the experimental results, it was found that we could occur the auto acceleration for reaction of raw materials with operating parameters over $65^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature in the vinyl acetate polymerization process.

  • Environmental problems from petroleum-based plastic wastes have been rapidly increasing in recent years. The alternative solution is focus on the development of environmental friendly plastic derived from renewable resource. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer synthesized from biomass having potential to replace the petroleum-based non-degradable polymers utilizations. PLA can be synthesized by two methods: (1) ring-opening of lactide intermediate and (2) direct polycondensation of lactic acid processes. The latter process has advantages on high yields and high purity of polymer products, materials handling and ease of process treatments. The polymerization process of PLA synthesis has been widely studied in a laboratory scale. However, the mass scale production using direct polycondensation of lactic acid has not been reported. We have investigated the kinetics and scale-up process of direct polycondensation method to produce PLA in a pilot scale. The order of reaction is 2 and activation energy of lactic acid to lactic acid oligomers is 61.58 kJ/mol. The pre-polymer was further polymerized in a solid state polymerization (SSP) process. The synthesized PLA from both the laboratory and pilot scales show the comparable properties such as melting temperature and molecular weight. The appearance of synthesized PLA is yellow-white solid powder.

  • Recently, the modern society in development and industrial growth is investing a lot of time and much effort to improvement and environment of life quality. Thus, the casting tape which uses environmentally friendly and human body friendly water hardening process Polymer is rapidly substituted for the gypsum cast product which has been plentifully used in medical treatment. Until currently, prior researches have a tendency to focusing the analysis about chemical creation expense and reaction quality rather than the issue about optimization of the process for this polymerization. In the polymerization process which has been accomplished with actual same chemical creation expense, there has been a problem which is the possibility of getting a different result. This is because the optimization of respectively control factors is not accomplished which affect at polymerization process. Therefore, this research sees the chemical qualities of casting tape Polymer, consequently selects the polymerization process which is suitable. And, by using a experimental design, this research will evaluate the affects which the respective factors have on remaining NCO and viscosity. futhermore, this research will carry out the process optimization which can get the above results.

  • We investigated a simultaneous living anionic polymerization process of isoprene (I) and 4styrene-d_8$ (S) in $benzene-d_6$ as a solvent with sec-buthyllithium as an initiator into polyisoprene(PI)-block-poly($styrene-d_8$)(PS) and the polymerization-induced molecular self-assembling process. This process was observed in-situ by time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiment. The SANS profiles measured exhibited three time regions, where (i) the selective growth of PI chains occurs; (ii) the living chain ends switch from isoprenyllithium to styryllithium, and (iii) the SANS exhibited the polymerization induced disorder-to-order transition and order-to-order transition.

현장 중합을 이용한 PLA(Poly L-Lactide) 수지 기반 섬유 강화 복합 재료 제조 및 GPC를 이용한 분자량 측정 (Manufacturing Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials Based on PLA (Poly L-Lactide) Resin Using In-Situ Polymerization and Molecular Weight Measurement Using GPC)

  • The conventional FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) manufacturing process used thermoset resins for ease of molding but faced the issue of non-recyclability. To address these shortcomings, a new process utilizing thermal plastic resin was developed. However, due to the high viscosity of thermal plastic resin, problems such as fiber deformation and a reduced fiber volume fraction occurred during the high-temperature, high-pressure process. In this study, to overcome the limitations of the conventional process, fiber-reinforced composite materials were manufactured through in-situ polymerization using PLA (Poly L-Lactide) resin in the VA-RTM (Vacuum Assistance Resin Transfer Molding) process. The fiber volume of the produced specimens was calculated, and resin impregnation and porosity were confirmed through optical microscopy. Additionally, molecular weight analysis using GPC (Gel Permission Chromatography) demonstrated improvements over the conventional process and emphasized the essential requirement of temperature control.

벌크 중합법에 의한 폴리스티렌 중합공정의 열적위험성 (Thermal Hazards of Polystyrene Polymerization Process by Bulk Polymerization)

  • 본 연구에서는 벌크 중합법을 이용한 폴리스티렌 중합공정의 폭주반응에 대한 열적 위험성을 가속속도열량계(ARC)와 소규모 반응열량계(MM)를 이용하여 평가하였다. 당해 중합공정은 반응온도 $120^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$로 운전되어져야 하며, $130^{\circ}C$ 이상의 반응온도에서는 반응 생성물의 급격한 점도 증가로 인하여 반응기의 온도제어 실패에 따른 폭주반응의 위험성이 존재하였다. 또한 당해 중합공정의 반응온도($120^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$)에서 공정운전 초기에 반응기의 냉각실패가 발생할 경우 폭주반응으로 인해 반응기의 온도와 압력이 각각 30 ~ 50분 이내에 약 $340^{\circ}C$, 5.3 bar 까지 급격히 상승하여 반응기의 파열판이 파열되거나 반응기가 폭발할 수 있는 열적 위험성이 높게 나타났다.
