  • A new enzyme immobilization method based on hydrophobic interaction between supporting material and enzyme has been successfully developed. The efficacy of the new technique has been investigated by loading a horse radish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme on the surface of conducting polymer-silica composites and by measuring the enzyme activity and leaching property of HRP loaded within polymer-silica composites. The immobilized HRP enzyme showed activity profiles similar to that of free HRP in phosphate buffer (pH 6). Above all, HRP adsorbed on the polymer-silica composites has showed excellent stability over 10 days, compared to HRP adsorbed on the pristine silica. It is thought that with appropriate optimization works, the present method would be used as a cost-effective and facile route for the immobilization of biomolecules.

  • Biphenyltetracarboximide-phenylene diamine polyimide/silica-titania ternary hybrid composites were Prepared by thermal imidization and sol-gel reaction. Fluorescence spectroscopic, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy studies revealed that the addition of small amount of titania showed profound effects on the microstructure and photophysical behaviors of polyimide/silica hybrid composites, when the content of silica-titania mixture was small or when the ratio of silica to titania in the mixture was high.

  • The (0.8PPV+0.2DMPPV) copolymer and silica/borosilicate composites were synthesized by sol-gel process. The organic-inorganic hybrid solution was prepared by using of (0.8PPV+0.2DMPPV) copolymer precursor solution as a raw material for organic components and TEOS and TMB for glass components. Then by drying the solution in vacuum at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 7days and subsequent heat treatment in vacuum at 15$0^{\circ}C$~30$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h~72h with heating rate of 0.2$^{\circ}C$/min and 1.8$^{\circ}C$/min, the organic-inorganic composites were synthesized. Microstructural evolution of the composites was characterized by DSC, IR spectrocopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, and TEM. Elimination of the polymer precursor and degradation of the polymer were observed by DSC and Si-O and trans C=C absorption peaks were identified by IR spectra. The polymer was found to be successfully incorporated into the glass matrix and it was confirmed by the absorption peaks from the polymer in the UV/VIS spectra and the TEM results. The absorption peak of the composites was found to shift toward short wavelength side compared to that of the pure polymer and the amount of the blue shift increased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and heat treatment time and with decreasing the heating rate.

  • Maleimidopropyltriethoxysilane grafted natural rubber (MISNR) was prepared by reaction of maleic anhydride grafted natural rubber and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. MISNR was used as the compatibilizer of natural rubber/silica composites. The composites were prepared by two-step mixing procedures. The final mixtures were cured with optimum cure condition, which was established by a rheometer. Effects of the amounts of compatibilizer in the composites on the cure characteristics, morphology, thermal stability, and physical and mechanical behaviors were investigated. The composites having MISNR had shown cure characteristics and physical and mechanical properties superior to those without MISNR. Silica particles in the former appeared to be more uniform and reduced in size compared with the latter. The effects of the types of silica were also evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adhesion in flexure depending on the cement type, polymer type, polymer-cement ratio, and silica fume ratio of the polymer-cement composites(PCCs) for crack repair in RC structures to induce optimal mix proportions. The adhesion in flexure of PCCs for crack repair of RC structure has a significant effect on the polymer type and polymer-cement ratio, and the adhesion in flexure is generally improved with mixing of silica fume as a mixture. The adhesion in flexure according to the type of polymer is slightly higher in the order of SAE, EVA, and SBR, and it is relatively high at the polymer-cement ratio of 60% or 80%. In addition, the adhesion in flexure of PCCs with silica fume ratio of 10% or 20% to the cement weight is higher than that without silica fume. In order to improve the adhesion in flexure of PCCs for repairing cracks in RC structures, the optimal mix design is to properly adjust the cement type, polymer type, polymer-cement ratio, and silica fume ratio.

  • Various studies have been conducted to improve silica dispersion of silica filled tire tread compounds; among them, silica wet masterbatch (WMB) technology is known to be suitable for manufacturing silica filled compounds that have high silica content and high dispersibility. Till now, the WMB study is focused on the natural rubber (NR) or emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber (ESBR) that does not have a silica-affinity functional group, and a study of NR or ESBR having a silica-affinity functional group is still not well known. Unlike the dry masterbatch technology, the WMB technology can solve the problems associated with the high Mooney viscosity when applied to silica-friendly rubber. However, a coagulant suitable for each functional group has not yet been determined. Therefore, in this study, different coagulant applied silica WMB was prepared by applying calcium chloride, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid by using a carboxyl group functionalized reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer ESBR. The evaluation of the WMB compounds revealed that the calcium chloride added WMB compound showed excellent silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and rolling resistance.

  • The hybrid composites of aliphatic polyester-silica were prepared via a sol-gel reaction and their potential application using as a buffer coating layer in the thermoelectric device were investigated. When aliphatic polyesters were thermally treated at a high temperature of $240^{\circ}C$, the polymer showed an increases in thermal degradation temperature by $30{\sim}90^{\circ}C$ according to the thermal treatment time. The polyester-silica composites showed an increases in thermal degradation temperature by $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ according to the content of the added silica. Polyester-silica composite showed neither discoloration nor change in optical properties because Knoevenagel condensation reaction was hindered by silica structure. The thermal conductivity of the composites increased linearly according to the content of added silica.

  • We report the effect of the amount of the mesoporous material, SBA-15, on the basic traits of fully aliphatic polyimides (API). For this purpose, water soluble, fully aliphatic poly(amic acid) triethyl amine salts ($PAA_{(s)}$) were prepared and mixed with various amounts of SBA-15. Fully aliphatic polyimide hybrid composites containing the SBA 15-type mesoporous silica were synthesized successfully from bicyclo [2.2.2] oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and alicyclic diamine, 4,4'-methylene bis(2-methylcyclohexylamine). The structure of the hybrid composites was confirmed by IR spectroscopic analysis. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the morphology of the compounds. The hybrid composites exhibited good thermal stability, reasonable transparency, and a low dielectric constant.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the durability performance of polymer modified cement composites for repair of concrete under combined aging conditions. The experimental procedure was divided into three parts. First, the replacement level of mineral admixtures in polymer modified cement composites were determined in an experimental study based on a Box Behnken design. Second, the flow value, compressive strength and chloride permeability test of sixteen types of mixtures were conducted. Test results show that the polymer modified cement composites were effected on the improvement of the compressive strength and permeability performance. Third, the effects on the replacement level of silica fume mixture was evaluated by the compressive strength, chloride permeability, chemical resistance and repeated freezing and thawing cycles test. They demonstrated that the polymer modified cement composites using mixture of silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag improved the durability performance.

  • The optimum mixing conditions of silica and silane containing rubber composites were evaluated by investigating the properties of rubber composites prepared with a silica composition of 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80 g, respectively. The crosslinking rate decreased with increasing silica content, with he promoters being adsorbed on the silica surface with in the rubber composite. As a result, the increase in crosslinking time resulted in the destruction of the silica structure. The increase of the bound rubber content due to the destruction of the silica structure inhibited the chain motion of the polymer molecules and reduced the cohesion of the silica itself. Finally, the increase of silica content showed the increase of hardness, tensile strength, and storage modulus of rubber composites.
