We modified the molecular structure of urethane acrylate oligomer by varying raw materials. Also fluorination of the host polymer matrices has been found to influence the morphological and the electrooptical properties of the resulting HPDLC grating. The incorporation of fluorinated monomers in HPDLC formulation enhance the LC phase separation and improved elctro-optical properties.
Tissue engineering is one exciting approach to treat patients who need a new organ or tissue. A critical element in this approach is the polymer scaffold, as it provides a space for new tissue formation and mimics many roles of natural extra-cellular matrices. In this review, we describe several design parameters of polymer matrices that can significantly affect cellular behavior, as well as various polymers which are frequently used to date or potentially useful in many tissue engineering applications. Interactions between cells and polymer scaffolds, including specific receptor-ligand interactions, physical and degradation feature of the scaffolds, and delivery of soluble factors, should be considered in the design and tailoring of appropriate polymer matrices to be used in tissue engineering applications, as these interactions control the function and structure of engineered tissues.
Polymeric reinforcement and coatings of alginate beads were carried out to control the release rate of drug from alginate beads. A poorly water-soluble ibuprofen (IPF) was selected as a model drug. A commercially available $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS100 was also used as a polymer. Effects of polymeric contents, the presence of plasticizers and amount of drug loading on the release rate of drug were investigated. The release rate of drug from alginate beads in the simulated gastric fluid did not occur within 2 h but released immediately when dissolution media were switched to the simulated intestinal fluid. No significant difference of release rate from polymer-reinforced alginate bead without plasticizers was observed when compared to plain (simple) beads. However, the release rate of drug from polymer-reinforced alginate beads was further sustained and retarded when aluminium tristearate (AT) as a plasticizer was added to polymer. However, polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) did not change the release rate of drug from alginate beads although PEG400 was used to improve dispersion of polymer and sodium alginate, and plasticize $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS100 polymer. The presence of plasticizer was crucial to reinforce alginate gel matrices using a polymer. As the amount of drug loading increased, the release rate of drug increased as a result of decreasing effects of polymer contents in matrices. The significantly sustained release of drug from polymer-coated alginate beads occurred as the amount of polymer increased because the thickness of coated membrane increased so that cracks and pores of the outer surface of alginate beads could be reduced. The sustained and retarded action of polymer-reinforced and coated beads may result from the disturbance of swelling and erosion (disintegration) of alginate beads. From these findings, polymeric-reinforcement and coatings of alginate gel beads can provide an advanced delivery system by retarding the release rate of various drugs.
Carbon fibers (CFs) have high service temperature, strength, and stiffness, and low weight. They are widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The role of the polymer matrix in the composites is to provide bulk to the composite laminate and transfer load between the fibers. The interface between the CF and the resin matrix plays a critical role in controlling the overall properties of the composites. This paper aims to review the synthesis, properties, and applications of polymer matrices, such as thermosetting and thermoplastic resins.
Polypropylene glycol (M.W. 4000) was crosslinked and chain-extended by using triisocyanate and diisocyanate to synthesize rubbery and water swellable hydrogels. Model drugs, i.e., sodium salicylate and indomethacin were incorporated in the polymer matrices by swelling loading. The drug release rates of drugs could be regulated by varying the degrees of crosslinking and chain-extension. Whereas, no correlation was observed between the drug release profiles and the swelling behaviours of the matrices. The release of drugs from the matrices was considered to be governed by the mobility and mesh size of the polymer chains in the matrices.
In this study, the influence of dilauroyl peroxide on mechanical and thermal properties of different polypropylene (PP) matrices was investigated. Polypropylene matrices, different molecular weight isotactic PP containing 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 wt% of dilauroyl peroxide (DLP) were prepared by using a single-screw extruder. The effect of the visbreaking agent (DLP) on mechanical, physical, thermal and morphological properties of different molecular weight PP had been studied. Mechanical properties (tensile strength at break point, at yield and elongation at break point), melt flow index (MFI), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses of these matrices were examined. Melting ($T_m$) and crystallization ($T_c$) temperatures, crystallinity ratio (%) and enthalpies were determined. The microstructure of isotactic polypropylene matrix was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From SEM analysis, it was observed that the surface disorder increased by the increasing amount of DLP. As a result of DSC analyses, the crystallinity ratio of the PP matrices has varied between 1.64-7.27%. Mechanical properties of the matrices have been improved. Particularly, the mechanical tests of PP have given interesting results when compounded with 0.06-0.08 wt% dilauroyl peroxide (DLP). Mechanical properties and thermal decomposition processes were all changed by increasing the amount of DLP in the matrix structure.
The photoproduced cation radical of N-methylphenothiazine doped in the different kind of matrices of phenyltriethoxysilane (PhiTEOS), vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS), and methyloiethoxysilane (METOS) was comparatively studied with electron spin resonance (ESR) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR). The photoinduced charge separation efficiency was determined by integration of ESR spectra which correspond to the amount of photoproduced cation radical in the matrices. This was correlatively studied with the polarity and pore size of the gel matrices. The polarity of the matrices was comparatively determined by measuring λ$\sub$max/ values of PC$_1$ in the different matrices. The relative pore size among the matrices was determined by measuring relative proton matrix ENDOR line widths of the photoproduced cation radical of PCI. The decay kinetic constants of the cation radical of PCI in the different matrices was relatively studied with fitting the biexponential decay curves after exposure into the ambient condition. This is correlatively interpreted with the polarity and pore size of the matrices.
We have developed the yttrium oxide (YNP) or ytterbium oxide (YbNP) nanoparticle/polymer matrices for the size-dependent separation of DNA ranging from 100 bp to 9,000 bp. High separation efficiency (> $10^6$ plates/m) and the baseline resolution for various DNA standards (100 bp, 500 bp, and 1 kbp DNA ladder) were obtained in 10 min with these matrices. The effects of concentrations of both polyethylene oxide (PEO) and nanoparticles were investigated and the highest performance was obtained at 0.02% PEO with 0.02% YNP or YbNP. Similar sieving power for both YNP and YbNP matrices was observed probably due to the similar sizes of nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of comparable sieving networks for DNA separation. For the reduction of electrosmotic flow, either dynamic or permanent coating of the capillary inner wall was compared and it turned out that PEO was superior to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or polyacrylamide (PAA) for better separation efficiency.
Characterization of the various chemical aspects of composite polymers is important for quality control of manufactured polymers. In this study, we compared three suitable matrices (α cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid [CHCA], 2,5 dihydroxy benzoic acid [2,5-DHB], and dithranol), to characterize various synthetic polymers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Although the spectra obtained with the CHCA and 2,5-DHB matrices were generally good, in certain samples ghost peaks disappeared only when dithranol was used as the matrix. Furthermore, we examined the use of sodium trifluoroacetate (NaTFA) as an additive to reduce interference by metals and copolymers in the spectra. In conclusion, appropriate selection of a matrix, according to the characteristics of the polymer, and the use of additives to improve sensitivity are important considerations for polymer analysis and development.
Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) were synthesized via radical polymerization of PMAA and simultaneous crosslinking of PEO using triisocyanate. The equilibrium swelling of PEO-PMAA IPN was determined at different pHs. The swelling of PEO-PMAA IPN, ranged from 20% to 90%, was more sensitive than that of homo polymer PMAA gel This is probably due to protonation and deprotonation of the PMAA network and interpolymer complex formation between PEO and PMAA. Several model drugs were loaded into the IPN matrices and the release mechanisms were investigated. The release of nonionizable drugs such as ftorafur and prednisolone was controlled by swelling of the matrices. However, he release of propranolol, positively charged drug, was more affected by the ionic interaction between the drug and PMAA newtork, and the interpolymer complexation.
