Melt blending of Bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) was carried out over the entire composition range. The mixing time was varied up to 90 min. The resulting samples were analyzed by FT-IR, DSC, XRD, DMTA, $^{1}H NMR$, and SEM. The process of transesterification between the two polymers and their resulting compatibilization were observed. The behaviors of the PTT-rich and PC-rich blends were different and an equilibrium was found to exist. Peculiar behavior, which was different from that of the PTT-rich and PC-rich blends, was exhibited by the 50/50 (PTT/PC) blend.
The mechanical properties and morphologies of cellulose blends with two different additives were compared. Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of ethylene glycol (EG) were used as additives in the formation of cellulose blends through the solution blending. The properties of blends were varied with the additive content in the polymer matrix. The ultimate tensile strength and initial modulus of the cellulose blends were highest for a blend PVA content of 30 wt% and for a blend EG content of 10 wt%, respectively. Ternary blended systems of composition of cellulose/PVA (70/30=w/w)/EG were also prepared by the solution blending method with different EG contents. The mechanical properties of these systems were found to be optimal for EG contents of up to 40 wt%. The mechanical properties of the cellulose ternary blend films were superior to those of the cellulose binary blend films. The oxygen permeability transmission rate ($O_2TR$) monotonically decreased with increasing EG content in the ternary blend films. Overall, the mechanical properties of the cellulose blend films were found to be better than those of pure cellulose films.

To manufacture of a completely biodegradable and compostable biomass -based blend polymer film, two types of cellulose acetates(DS=2.4 and DS=2.7) were blended with 5 - 50 wt% of low average molecular weight polylactide(PLA) by mixing each polymer solution having same viscosity in 10 wt% methanol/dichloromethane. Their surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The chemical structures of blend films were confirmed by the fourier transform IR spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection(FT-IR ATR) spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) photos of blend films of both CAs with less than 5 % of PLA showed homogeneous morphology. On the contrary, the other blends with higher than 20 wt% of PLA content showed a large phase separation with spherical domains. The thermal property of blend films was also analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The tensile strength of CA/PLA blend films was increased up to $820kg_f/cm^2$ for TAC/PLA and $600kg_f/cm^2$ for DAC/PLA.

This study explores the impact of polymer blending on the mechanical properties and triboelectric energy harvesting capability of composite polymers. A multifunctional free-standing polymer blend composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) was fabricated using a polymer casting method. Stress-strain analysis of the polymer blend revealed an enhanced stretchability of 308.4% with excellent transparency. Furthermore, triboelectric analysis revealed dynamic energy harvesting capabilities with impressive electrical voltage and current output of 50 V and 5 μA. These results represent a significant improvement compared to individual PVA and PDDA polymers and highlight the potential of polymer blending to enhance both mechanical and electrical properties for energy harvesting applications.
Fluorescence microscope technique was employed for the characterization of phase separation behavior of a 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan labeled polystyrene (PS) / polybutadiene (PB) blend in dioctyl phthalate under steady shear. It was confirmed that the fluorescence microscope images reflect the real phase morphology by comparing with the images of phase contrast microscope. Comparing the fluorescence intensities from the phase separated domain (PS rich) and continuous phase (PB rich), the composition difference between these two phases were deduced. The observed shear dependence of compositional change is then used to confirm that the phase diagram is indeed shifted under the steady shear.
Chloro isobutylene isoprene rubber (CIIR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) compounded with other formulation chemicals, depending on the polymer blend, were prepared by mechanical mixing. After manufacturing the rubber vulcanizate by compression molding with a hot press, the mechanical and thermal properties including thermal conductivity, rebound resilience of the CIIR/EPDM blends were measured. As the EPDM rubber content increased, hardness and tension set showed a tendency to increase. Pure CIIR exhibited the lowest tensile strength; however, tensile strength increased with loading of EPDM rubber. On the other hand, in CIIR rubber, which is usually a low-rebound elastomer owing to a high damping effect, rebound resilience exhibited an increasing trend as the content of EPDM rubber increased. As the EPDM rubber content increased, thermal stability was improved due to reduction of decomposition rate in the rubber region of the blend vulcanizate.
Miscibility itnd thermal behavior of blends of synthetic biodegradable aliphatic polyester (Bionolle) with poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were investigated by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) and a rotational rheometer. Observed both single glass transition temperatures from the DSC in agreement with the Fox equation and single T$_{g}$ changes as a function of composition from the DMTA indicate that these blend mixtures are miscible. In addition, the miscibility of this blend system was also observed from the single curve of the Cole-Cole Plot of log G′($\omega$) vs. log C"($\omega$) from the dynamic test using a rotational rheometer. This was further verified from the cryogenically fractured surface of BDP/PECH blends by scanning electron microscopy.
Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is a conjugated polymer that is highly soluble in organic solvents and is readily available. However, its electrical properties as an active channel in electronic devices are not enough for practical applications, necessitating further improvement in the properties. In this study, we demonstrate that the blending of two P3HT polymers (i.e., regio-regular (RR) P3HT and regio-random (RRa) P3HT) with different regioregularities can significantly improve charge transport characteristics of the blend films. The morphological and electrical properties of the blend films were systematically investigated by varying the ratio between two P3HT polymers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis) were employed to evaluate the morphological and optoelectronic properties of the blend films. The crystallinity of the blend films increased with increasing the content of RRa-P3HT to 20 wt% and gradually decreased as the content increased to 80%. Consistently, the highest charge carrier mobility was obtained from the blend films containing 20 wt% RRa-P3HT, which value was measured to be 0.029 cm2/V·s. The values gradually decreased to 0.0007 cm2/V·s with increasing the content of RRa-P3HT to 80 wt%.
Hollow fiber was prepared from the blend of a high density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The changes in the morphology and mechanical property of the hollow fiber were investigated. The commercial product (Sterapore), having a high water permeability, was analyzed with viscosity measurement and FT-IR. The molecular weight of Sterapore was very high and its surface was coated with a vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer. The content of UHMWPE in the HDPE/UHMWPE blend was limited below 10 wt%. In order to improve the dispersion of UHMWPE, a mineral oil should be introduced in the blend. The morphology and mechanical property of the hollow fiber of HDPE/UHMWPE blend were similar to those of the commercial product.
A polymer composite electrolyte of a blend of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a host polymer, the ethylene carbonate as a solvent, and $LiClO_4$ as a salt was studied. The crystallinity of the polymer electrolytes was evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolytes was measured by frequency response analyzer(FRA) method. The effect of PEO/PMMA blend ratios on the ionic conduction in these electrolytes was investigated. The electrolyte films showed a phase separation due to immiscibility of the PMMA with the PEO. The PMMA-rich phase and the PEO-rich phase were produced during a film casting. The ionic conductivity of blend electrolyte was dependent on the content of PMMA and showed the highest value at 20 wt.%. However, when PMMA content exceeds 20 wt.%, the ionic conductivity was decreased due to the slow ionic transport through the PMMA-rich phase.
