  • In recent years, more than 5,000 tons of sargassum honeri have been infested in the southern coast and the coast of Jeju Island, causing serious damage to the farms and fisheries, and environmental problems. The alginate contained in the sargassum honeri is a natural polymeric substance mainly used for medicines and foods. However, since there is no way to utilize it in large quantities, a study was carried out to utilize bio polymer obtained from sargassum honeri in producing polymer mortar for repairing deteriorated infrastructures. From the tests of setting time, it was found that the L0BP12 mixture containing 12% of bio polymer increased the setting time by 20% as compared with the L12BP0 mixture using only synthetic polymer. From the tests of water absorbtion, the LOBP12 combination decreased by 0.36% compared to Plain-URHC using ultra rapid hardening cement. This indicated that the watertightness of the mortar was increased by the incorporation of the bio polymer. In the compressive and flexural strength tests, the strength decreased as the amount of bio polymer increased. The incorporation rate of the maximum bio polymer satisfying the KS F 4042 standard was determined to be 12%. In addition, the bond strength of the mortar produced with biopolymer was higher than that of Plain-URHC specimens, and it was confirmed that incorporation of bio polymer improves bond strength of mortar.

  • Recently, polymer-modified mortar has been studied for proposed use on industrial floors as top layers with thin thicknesses, typically 5~ 15mm. The purpose of this study is to evaluate basic properties of self leveling materials using polymer modifier as kinds of SBR, PAE, SUBA. Superplasticizer and thickener have been included in the mixes to reduce bleeding and drying shrinkage as well as in order to facilitate the workability required. The self leveling materials using four types of polymer dispersion are prepared with polymer-cement ratios which respectively range from 50%, 75%, and were tested for basic characteristics such as adhesion in tension, crack resistance test, rebound test after the preparative tests for unit weight, air content, consistency ratio etc. The results show almost as equal quality as existing commercial industrial flooring when mortar is modified by polymer dispersion. Adhesion in tension of polymer modified mortars using each SBR and PAE emulsion was over 10 kgf/$cm^{2}$. Crack or flaw derived from shrinkage is strongly dependent on the type of polymer dispersion because of each different total solid of polymer. It is judged that polymer modified mortar with self-leveling can be very well suited for Floor-finished.

  • Various researches on the application of polymer dispersions to the cement mortar and concrete have been practised in many countries like America, Japan and Germany and so on because of high performance and good modification effect of these. In this study, SBR, Polymer dispersion that widely used in situ is employed that the self-flowability may be induced in the cemen mortar. In order to comprehend and investigate the modification of cement mortar with self-flowability by SBR and properties and fracture mode of adhesive strength in tension of that, experimental parameter was set as SBR solid-Cement ratio(S/C) and Cement:Fine aggregate(C:F) and the experiments such as Unit weight, Flow, Consistency change, Crack resistance and Segregation that inform on the general properties have been done. In addition of that, Adhesion in tension is measured with a view to comprehending the properties and fracture mode in tensile load. Consistency change of cement mortar modified by SBR did grow better as the ratio of SBR solid-Cement increased and was much superior to that of resin based flooring such as polyurethane and epoxy which recorded the loss of consistency in 90min. after mixing. Adhesive strength in tension increased with continuity in the curing age and showed the maximum in case of C:F=1:1 and S/C=20%. As the increase of curing age, the fracture mainly happened in the concrete substrate and the interface between the specimen and concrete substrate.

  • In this paper, three kinds of poly(acrylate-co-methylacrylate) with different number average molecular weight(Mn) were synthesized and studied for the effects on the mechanical properties and the fluidities of the cement mortar admixtured with them. The physical properties of the cement mortar are more favorably enhanced by the poly(acrylate-co-methylacrylate) of Mn,, 5,000 than that of Mn, 2,000∼3,000. And the optimum dosage was decided to ca. 0.6 % of cement weight in cement mortar. However, the dispersion abilities of the polymers in cement mortar was not kept long time. This last result could not be explained by the theory that the fluidity of the cement mortar added with the slow releasing polycarboxylates is kept by the releasing of the carboxylic group of the copolymer in alkaline solution of cement paste.

  • Polymer-modified cement is the composite material made by partially replacing and strengthening the cement hydrate binders of conventional mortar with polymeric modifiers such as polymer latexes and redispersible polymeric modifiers. It is known that the addition of polymer to cement mortar leads to improved quality, which would be expected to have a high chemical resistance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the improved chemical resistance, such as low permeability and low ion diffusivity, of the polymer-modified cement as a solidification agent for the radwaste. First, polymer-modified cement specimens by latex modification were prepared according to the polymer content from 0% to 30% to select the optimized polymer content. At those specimens, the water-to-cement (W/C) ratio was maintained to 33% and 50% respectively. After the much curing time, the structural integrity of specimens was evaluated through the compressive strength test and the porosity evaluation by the water immersion method. From the results, 10% of the polymer content at 33% of the W/C ratio was shown to have the most improved quality. Finally, the leaching test referredfrom ANS 16.1 for the specimens having the most improved quality was conducted. Dedicated specimens for the leaching test were then mixed with radioisotopes of $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ at the specimen preparation.

  • The tailings stocked at two tailing piles in Sangdong aea have raised collapse hazards and various environmental problems. A trial for effective utilization of tailings as fine aggregates for polymer concrete has been performed along with mineralogical and physical characterization of tailings. The tailings from the Sangdong mine, mainly composed of quartz, orthoclase, amphiboles and muscovite, are alkaline and tailings at the new tailing pile are generally finer in grain size than those at the old tailing pile. In case of using New Tailings as fine aggregates, cement mortar with equivalent amounts of tailings and sands shows the highest compressive strength. Cement mortars containing tailings show lower values of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength than those not-containing tailings. Mixture of polymers such as SBR and EVA in cement mortars raises strengths of cement mortars effectively, which shows potential possiblity to utilize the tailings in Sangdong area as fine aggregates for polymer concretes.

  • Drying shrinkage and strength of the redispersible SBR and PAE powder-modified mortars were experimentally investigated. Results of the study that the drying shrinkage rapidly increased until 7 days of age and it was then saturated to the value of about $1\~2\times10^{4}$ after 14 days. It turned out that the polymer-cement ratio exerted more influence on the drying shrinkage than the content of powder shrinkage-reducing agent did. Flexural (compressive) strength of the mortar increased (decreased) as the polymer-cement ratio increased and it was 7$\~$11 (23$\~$39) MPa at 7 days of age. The average (maximum) increasing (decreasing) rate turned out to be about 10 (30) $\%$. As in the drying shrinkage case, the polymer-cement ratio exerted more influence on both flexural and compressive strengths than the content of powder shrinkage agent did.

  • The objective of this paper is to obtain the basic data in order to develop an eco-friendly concrete through evaluation on the properties of polymer cement mortar and concrete using PVAc (Polyvinyl Acetate), as a kind of water-soluble polymer. For this purpose, the physical properties of cement mortar and concrete which does not contain the PVAc as the control batch were compared and analyzed with those using the PVAc. And then, the replacement amount of the PVAc was 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% by binder, respectively. And also, the properties of concrete using the PVAc were evaluated, by adding an antifoaming agent in order to control the air contents increasing with an increase of amount of polymer usage. As a result, in the case of polymer cement mortar using the PVAc, it presented that the compressive strength reduced, while the performance of flexural strength and drying shrinkage increased. When the replacement of the PVAc was 6% within concrete, the compressive, tensile, flexural strength and elastic modulus were increased.

  • This study is a study on the flexural adhesion performance of polymer cement composites(PCCs) repair section according to the crack depth, and the flexural adhesion strength was obtained through a flexural strength test of cement mortar that was filled into cracks and repaired to a certain thickness using PCCs made of ultra high-early strength cement and polymer dispersion of EVA. As a result of the study, the flexural adhesion performance according to the crack width and crack depth was expected to decrease the flexural adhesion strength as the crack depth increased at the crack width 3.0mm, but the crack width 2.0mm and 1.5mm did not show any tendency according to the crack depth. In addition, even in the final destruction, the fact that the cracks and bottoms filled with PCCs were not cut or dropped proves that PCCs have excellent adhesion and rich toughness.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate chloride ion adsoption property of cement mortar using nitrite type hydrocalumite(calumite) with self-corrosion inhibition function. Superior corrosion inhibition function of the VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite was ascertained from accelerated corrosion test in the previous study. In this study, VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite were prepared with calumite contents of 0, 5, 10% and polymer-binder ratio of 0, 10%, and tested for chloride ion adsorption to make it clear how calumite gives self-corrosion inhibition function to cement mortar. As a result, chloride ion adsorption property of VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite was improved by increasing calumite contents compared to unmodified mortar regardless of using VA/E/MMA terpolymer powder or not.
