  • In this work, the non-ionic polyethylene oxide(PEO)/phenolic formaldehyde resin(PFR) retention system, which was less affected by furnish charge, was analyzed for possibility and effectiveness when using recycled stock. When the micropolymer was added at the PEO/PFR retention system and the PAM/bentonite retention system, performance of retention and drainage was improved. When the cationic micropolymer was added on the PEO/PFR retention system, the highest retention was achieved. The Polyacrylamide(PAM)/bentonite system induced flocculation of white pitch by electrostatic flocculation. On the other hand, the non-ionic PEO/PFR retention system induced less flocculation of white pitch than the PAM/bentonite retention system.

  • Periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) were synthesized using bis(triethoxy silyl) benzene as the precursor and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTMA) as the templating agent. From these results of XRD, TEM, and NMR, the pore structure of the material was confirmed to have a well-organized hexagonal structure. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was penetrated into PMO. From the DSC and XRD experiments, the polymer melting transition of crystalline polyethylene oxide (PEO) decreased then finally disappeared. These results prove that the polymer chains penetrate into the PMO channels, and penetrated polymer chains are constrained inside channels of PMO.

  • We have developed the yttrium oxide (YNP) or ytterbium oxide (YbNP) nanoparticle/polymer matrices for the size-dependent separation of DNA ranging from 100 bp to 9,000 bp. High separation efficiency (> $10^6$ plates/m) and the baseline resolution for various DNA standards (100 bp, 500 bp, and 1 kbp DNA ladder) were obtained in 10 min with these matrices. The effects of concentrations of both polyethylene oxide (PEO) and nanoparticles were investigated and the highest performance was obtained at 0.02% PEO with 0.02% YNP or YbNP. Similar sieving power for both YNP and YbNP matrices was observed probably due to the similar sizes of nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of comparable sieving networks for DNA separation. For the reduction of electrosmotic flow, either dynamic or permanent coating of the capillary inner wall was compared and it turned out that PEO was superior to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or polyacrylamide (PAA) for better separation efficiency.

  • The release of heparin from monolithic devices composed of different ratios of polyethylene oxide(PEO MW 20,000) and polydimethylsiloxane was investigated. Water soluble PEO plended into the polydimethylsiloxane proved a controlled release of heparin. The release rate of heparin could be controlled by varying the content of PEO and loading dose of heparin. The release rate of heparin from the devices increased as the content of PEO and heparin in the devices increased. The release rate of heparin from devices were related to nature of solute(ionic strength) and temperature. The release mechanism may be associated with the creation of pore or domine through the devices the water-uptake and the change in the physical structure of the polydimethysiloxane network.

  • The blends of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) have been recognized as a replacement for commodity plastic films and bags in biodegradable packaging industries. The purpose of this study is to identify changes in the thermal and mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT blends with the addition of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO). PLA (80%) and PBAT (20%) were melt mixed with 0 to 10 phr of PEO and processed using a hot press. The addition of PEO into PLA/PBAT increased the elongation at break and improved thermal stability. With PEO addition, two melting temperature (Tm) peaks of PLA/PBAT merged into one peak showing improved miscibility. The result of this study showed that the addition of PEO increased the ductility and thermal stability of PLA/PBAT blends.

  • In this paper, we report a modified technique for the production of oriented continuous nanofibers instead of non-woven mats using a rapidly rotating collection device. We are interested in retaining physical properties such as electrical conductivity of fiber bundles in their axial direction. The experiments were performed using polyethylene oxide (PEO) and its blend with polyaniline (PANI). According to the results, a typical fiber with a uniform diameter of about 100 nanometer was produced. The fibers from the PEO/ CHCl$_3$ solution show high crystallinity and good orientation whereas the fibers from the blend solution of PEO/PANI/m-cresol and CHCl$_3$ show no preferred orientation. However, the fibers of the blend exhibit high electrical conductivity of 33 S/cm for a fiber bundle at a PANI level of 50 %.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) for Li secondary battery. This paper describes the effects of lithium salts, plasticizer addition and temperature dependence of conductivity of PEO electrolytes. Polyethylene oxide(PEO) based polymer electrolyte films were prepared by solution casting an acetonitrile solution of preweighed PEO and Li salt. After solvent evaporation, the electrolyte films were vacuum-dried at $60^{\circ}C$ for 48h, the thickness of the films were $90{\sim}110{\mu}m$. The conductivity properties of prepared PEO electrolytes are summarized as follows. PEO electrolyte complexed with $LiClO_4$ shows the better conductivity of the others. $PEO-LiClO_4$ electrolyte when $EO/Li^+$ ratio is 8, showed the best conductivity. Optimum operating temperature of PEO electrolyte is $60^{\circ}C$. By adding propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate to $PEO-LiClO_4$ electrolyte, its conductivity was higher than $PEO-LiClO_4$ without those. Also $PEO_8LiClO_4$ electrolyte remains static up to 4.5V vs. $Li/Li^+$.

  • Carbon dioxide was absorbed into aqueous polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution containing AMP in a flat-stirred vessel to investigate the effect of non-Newtonian rheological behavior of PEO on the rate of chemical absorption of $CO_2$, where the reaction between $CO_2$ and AMP was assumed to be a first-order reaction with respect to the molar concentration of $CO_2$ and AMP respectively. The liquid-side mass transfer coefficient, which was obtained from the dimensionless empirical equation containing the properties of viscoelasticity of the non-Newtonian liquid, was used to estimate the enhancement factor due to chemical reaction. PEO with elastic property of non-Newtonian liquid made the rate of chemical absorption of $CO_2$ accelerate compared with Newtonian liquid based on the same viscosity of the solution.

  • The release rate of heparin from monolithic devices composed of raffinose, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, polyethylene oxide (Mw 20,000, PEO), and hydrophobic polyether urethane (biomer) was investigated. Water soluble raffinose, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, and PEO blended into the biomer provided a controlled release of heparin. The release rate of heparin could be controlled by the content of raffinose, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, and PEO in the devices. The mechanism of release rate increased by the raffinose, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, and PEO may result from the formation of channels and pores in the biomer matrices following the swelling and the change in the physical structure of polymer net work. Hydrophobic polyurethane containing raffinose, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, and PEO can provide a hydrophilic antithrombogenic material for prolonged release of heparin.
