  • Nine disperse dyes have been synthesized by diazotization of 2-amino-4-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-nitrothiazole and coupled to substituted N-alkylanilines. Spectral properties in the IR and visible range of the dyes obtained were investigated. The dyeing performance of these dyes was assessed on nylon and polyester fibers. These dyes were found to give reddish brown to bluish violet shades on dyeing with very good depth, brightness and levelness on nylon and polyester fibers. The dyed fibers showed fairly good light fastness, very good to excellent fastness to wash, rubbing, perspiration and excellent fastness to sublimation. The dyebath exhaustion and fixation on the fiber were found to be very good.

  • Six nano disperse dyes were prepared using corresponding O/W nanoemulsions which were obtained with sodium laurylsulphate and caprylic triglyceride. The average particle size of the dyes prepared were in the range of $110{\sim}130nm$. Exhaust dyeing using nano dyes resulted in low exhaustion yields of $17{\sim}26%$ on regular polyester fiber and $28{\sim}38%$ on ultramicrofiber polyester. The observed low exhaustion yields of nano disperse dye can be explained by the solubilization of dye particles into surfactant micelles as well as the high stability of the nanoemulsions, these might reduce the capacity of dye uptake onto the fibers. However, higher K/S values of dyeings with nano dyes on ultramicrofiber sites compared to those on regular polyester sites suggested their potential to be more efficient dyes for finer denier microfiber polyesters.

  • The effect of chitosan on antibacterial activities of cotton, wool and polyester fibers was investigated by shake flask method. Chitosan was treated in 0.1%, 1% and 2% $NaBO_3$ solution to reduce the molecular weight in 4 steps, wadding of cotton, wool and polyester were treated in 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5% of chitosan solution which were dissolved in 2% acetic acid aqueous solution. The antibacterial activities of the fiber wadding treated and untreated by chitosan against Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Stephylococcus aureus were measured by shake flask method. On the untreated waddings, cotton showed better antibacterial activities than wool, but on the treated ones, wool showed better than cotton. The antibacterial activity of polyester was better than that of cotton or wool which preserved before and after the chitosan treatment against the three kinds of bacteria. When the chitosan treated cotton waddings was retreated in NaOH aqueous solution, their bacterial activities decreased. After laundering, the antibacterial activities of the treated cotton and wool waddings kept good, but that of the treated polyester reduced by almost half.

  • When scouring and contraction finishing at $90^{\circ}C$ using Relaxer or Rotary Washer contraction and weight loss ratio in warp and weft directions were excellent. Also surface state of fabric after drying or sanding treatment was excellent without crease. Low melting polyester fabric showed a complete melting bond by heat setting(P/S) at above $160^{\circ}C$. The alkali hydrolysis reaction of polyester showed the breakpoint in the weight loss behavior test, polyester yarn showed a breakpoint ranging from 25% to 28%. This is due to the difference of the hydrolysis rate between regular polyester and soluble polyester. Initially the soluble polyester was eluted and micro-fibrillized 5 times faster than a regular polyester. At a later time, a regular polyester was reduced weight to impart a proper flexibility and drape property to the fabric. As a result of surface sanding finishing, the surface of interior fabric showed a surface state most stabilized when using Mesh No. 220 in mono 0.2d after elution finishing. When the rotation direction of sanding roller was pro-, pro-, pro-, and retro-direction, a directional effect of tuft was not shown, a writing effect as suede was exhibited and a surface state was even. Sublimation fastness was 3-4 class for polyester and 2-4 class for nylon. Light fastness 3-4 class after lapse of 100 hours and 2-4 class after lapse of 160 hours. Abrasion fastness was 3-4 class on wet and 4-5 class on dry Laundry fastness was 2-4 class. As such, the abrasion fastness is slightly reduced upon wetting and the use thereof for interior is excellent, whereas laundry fastness is slightly lowered.

  • Sound absorbing materials are being developed in various materials and shapes and they are being applied in many fields such as construction, transportation, civil engineering, and sound. Among many sound-absorbing materials, polyester fiber has no environmental problems and harmfulness, and is a material with good sound absorption properties while being inexpensive. So it is manufactured as a nonwoven sound-absorbing material and used in various fields. In this study, polyester dry-laid nonwoven with different basis weight were manufactured using three types of polyester staple fibers: regular solid, single-hole hollow, and low linear density. We focused on the effects of the properties of the fibers, which constitute nonwovens, on the sound absorption properties, and we considered the basis weight. As the basis weight of the nonwoven fabric increased, the pore size became smaller and the air permeability was lowered, but the sound absorption coefficient was higher. However, the single-hole hollow polyester fiber did not contribute to the increase of the sound absorption coefficient of the nonwoven. It was established that, lower fiber fineness caused the sound absorption coefficient of the nonwoven to be increased. It was also found that the increase in the sound absorption coefficient due to the application of low fineness appeared from a certain basis weight or more.
