  • Thin-film humidity sensors were prepared using inorganic/organic hybrid polyelectrolytes, which were prepared from the sol-gel reaction of copolymers of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethylpropylammonium bromide (MEPAB), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM) with tetraethyl ortho-silicate (TEOS). The humidity-sensitive polyelectrolytes were composed of the copolymers having the following mole ratios of MEPAB, BMA, and TSPM: 60/30/10, 55/30/15, and 50/30/20. We found that the impedance varied with the content of MEPAB or TEOS; it ranged from $10^{7} to 10^{3}\Omega$ between 20 and $95\%$ relative humidity, which is the range required for a humidity sensor operating at ambient humidity. In addition we investigated a number of characteristics of these humidity sensors, such as their hysteresis, response time, temperature dependence, frequency dependence, water durability, and long-term stability.

  • In this study, we investigated influence of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) modified by washless multilayering of polyelectrolytes on paper quality. Three layers of polyelectrolytes (cationic starch/anionic polyacrylamide/cationic starch) were formed on the surface of GCC using laboratory inline washless polyelectrolytes multilayering system, which was called inline LbL GCC. Base papers were prepared with untreated GCC or inline LbL GCC using a laboratory handsheet former. These handsheets were coated with rod coater, and then printed by black ink. Properties of base paper and fold crack of coated paper were evaluated. Base paper with inline LbL GCC showed much higher mechanical strength in terms of tensile index, strain, internal bond strength, and folding endurance. The fold crack of coated paper with inline LbL GCC occurred more frequently compared to coated paper with untreated GCC. This might be due to highly improved internal bond strength of base paper, which resulted in smaller delamination that played a role of stress dissipation. It would be recommended to design a proper coating layer in order to prevent fold crack.

  • The synthesis of highly concentrated silver nano sol assisted by polymeric dispersant (polyelectrolytes) for inkjet method was studied. The silver nano sol was prepared with AgNO$_3$, polyelectrolytes (HS5468cf ; polyacrylic ammonium salt), and reducing agent. The polyelectrolytes play an important role in formation of complex composed of Ag$\^$+/ion and carboxyl group (COO$\^$-/), result in preparation of highly dispersed silver nano particles. The optimization of added amount of polyelectrolytes, and concentration of silver nano sol was studied. The silver nanoparticles were evaluated by XRD, particle size/zeta potential analyzer and FE-TEM. The silver nanoparticles with the range of 10 nm in diameter were produced. The concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible up to 40 wt%.

  • In this study, ground calcium carbonate (GCC) was modified by Layer-by-Layer (LbL) multilayering with polyelectrolytes. Cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) and poly sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) were used as cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes to modify GCC. The characteristics of the modified GCC were examined in terms of zeta potential and particle size with the addition level of polyelectrolyte and layer number. The GCC could form an assembly of cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes through consecutive adsorption process. The zeta potential of the modified GCC moved toward the cationicity and reached the plateau with the increase of the addition level of C-PAM. With layering of anionic PSS, the GCC had the negative charge. The particle size was dependent on the zeta potential. It was also observed by optical microscope. As the PSS was in the presence of the outermost layer, the GCC showed the better dispersability. It indicated that the surface charge and particle size can be controlled by adjusting the addition level of polyelectrolyte and the layer number.

  • The effect of anionic polyelectrolytes, poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(vinylsulfonate) (PVS), on the charge transfer complexing between indole derivatives and methyl viologen($MV^{++}$) cation was investigated. The results were compared with effect of NaCl and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). Both PSS and PVS enhanced the complex formation of neutral species (indole and indole acetate at low pH), zwitter ionic tryptophan, and positively charged tryptamine and tryptophan at low pH with $MV^{++}$. This result was attributed to the contribution of hydrophobic interaction, in addition to electrostatic interaction. The enhancing effect of PSS was much higher than that of PVS reflecting the higher hydrophobicity of PSS. The interaction between indole acetate anion and $MV^{++}$ was greatly reduced by addition of PVS and PSS. The higher charge density of PVS was appeared as greater reducing effect indicating the importance of electrostatic force in this case. In all cases, the effect of polyelectrolytes showed maxima, and further addition of PVS and PSS decreased the effect. This behavior was explained in terms of distribution of indole derivatives and $MV^{++}$ in domain of polyanions. The complex formation constants and molar absorptivities of complexes were determined, and the values were compared with those in water and SDS solutions.

  • New polyelectrolytes derived from poly(amide-sulfone)s and 1,5-dibromopentane were simultaneously fabricated on the electrode by the crosslinking reaction. The substrate was pretreated with a bromoalkyl-containing, silane-coupling agent to anchor the humidity-sensitive membrane to the substrate through the covalent bond. When the resistance dependence on the relative humidity of the crosslinked poly(amide-sulfone)s was measured, the resistance varied by three orders of magnitude between 20%RH and 90%RH, which was the required RH range for a humidity sensor operating at ambient humidity. Their water durability, long-term stabilities under various environments, hysteresis and response and recovery times were measured and evaluated as a humidity-sensing membrane.

  • As a mean to recover photosynthetic bacterial(PSB) cells and its practical uses in food industrial wastewater treatment, various biodegradable polyelectrolytes were first investigated for flocculation of suspended colloids in the PSB treatment process of soybean curd wastewater. Anionic polyelectrolytes such as sodium alginate and carrageenan were not effective but a cationic polyelectrolyte chitosan isolated from Portunus trituberclatus showed very effective flocculation activity. The concentration of chitosan, pH and temperature of wastewater for maximal flocculation were 40 mg/l, pH 7 and room temperature, respectively. Test using deacetylated chitosan to various degree showed higher flocculating activities in samples deacetylated over 75% and time for maximum flocculation was 40 min by stirring slowly under the above optimal conditions. Chitosan was not only effective to flocculate cells but also removed COD and MLSS of the wastewater. COD of 42% and MLSS of 87% were removed by addition of chitosan to the soybean curd wastewater treated with PSB.

  • Recently there has been significant interest in utilizing functional semiconductor polymers for electronic and opto-electronic devices such as Light-emitting diodes, thin film field effect transistors, solar cells, displays, and chemical and biosensors. However, better materials and further understanding of their electronic properties are critical for devices based on these materials. In this work, we use various scanning probe techniques, spectroscopy, and device fabrication to study the molecular interactions, optical and charge transport properties in conjugated polyelectrolytes. Using chemical synthesis approach, we are able to tune the molecular packing and interactions in these materials, which in turn, influence their electronic properties and device performance.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The complexation of platinum and palladium with synthetic polyelectrolytes was studied. The successive and overall stability constants of Pd(II) with PEI and 2PVP were obtained by potentiometric titration. Because of the slow equilibrium time, the potentiometric titrations were performed using the home-made automatic titrator in order to analyze the complexations according to the modified Bjerrum method. The complex formation constant of Pt(IV) with 2PVP, measured by differential pulse polarography, was calculated from the peak currents that were obtained in non-complexing media and in solution containing 2PVP.
