SiOC films were prepared by capacitively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition, and the correlation between the binding energy by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Arrhenius equation for ionization energy was studied. The ionization energy decreased with increase of the potential barrier, and then the dielectric constant also decreased. The binding energy decreased with increase of the potential barrier. The dielectric constant and electrical characteristic of SiOC film was obtained by Arrhenius equation. The dielectric constant of SiOC film was decreased by lowering the polarization, which was made from the recombination between opposite polar sites, and the dissociation energy during the deposition. The SiOC film with the lowest dielectric constant had a flat surface, which depended on how carbocations recombined with other broken bonds of precursor molecules, and it became a fine cross-linked structure with low ionization energy, which contributed to decreasing the binding energy by Si 2p, C 1s electron orbital spectra and O 1s electron orbital spectra. The dielectric constant after annealing decreased, owing to the extraction of the $H_2O$ group, and lowering of the polarity.
Corrosion of copper alloys (copper, bronze and brass) in soil was evaluated at ambient temperature using various methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curves and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy microanalysis measurements. Three equivalent circuits were separately used to interpret the obtained impedance spectra. The EIS measurements indicated that the polarization resistance of all electrodes increases with increasing the immersion time. SEM showed a presence of three layers of corrosion products with various composition and morphology covering each electrode. In addition, it was found that at 20% of moisture content the $R_p$ values and the current density of all electrodes in the studied soil give the following order: copper > bronze > brass. Good consistency between the data obtained from EIS and PP measurements was observed.
Here I report an electrochemical simulation work that compares voltammetric current and resistance of a complex electrochemical reaction over a potential scan. For this work, the finite element method is employed which are frequently used for voltammetry but rarely for impedance spectroscopy. Specifically, this method is used for simulation of a complex reaction where a heterogeneous faradaic reaction is followed by a homogeneous chemical reaction. By tracing the current and its polarization resistance, I learn that their relationship can be explained in terms of rate constants of charge transfer and chemical change. An unexpected observation is that even though the resistance is increased by the rate of the following chemical reaction, the current can be increased due to the potential shift of the resistance made by the proceeding faradaic reaction. This report envisions a possibility of the FEM-based resistance simulation to be applied to understand a complex electrochemical reaction. Until now, resistance simulations are mostly based on equivalent circuits or complete mathematical equations and have limitations to find proper models. However, this method is based on the first-principles, and is expected to be complementary to the other simulation methods.

The inhibition ability of N,N-bis(2,4-dihydroxyhydroxybenzaldehyde)-1,3-Propandiimine (DHBP) as a schiff base against the corrosion of API-5L-X65 steel in 1 M HCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical impedance studies indicated that DHBP inhibited corrosion by blocking the active corrosion sites. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing inhibitor concentrations. EIS data was analysed to equivalent circuit model and showed that the charge transfer resistance of steel increased with increasing inhibitor concentration whilst the double layer capacitance decreased. The adsorption of this compound obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Gibbs free energy of adsorption was calculated and indicated that adsorption occurred through physical and spontaneous process. The corrosion inhibition mechanism was studied by potential of zero charge. Polarization studies indicated that DHBP retards both the cathodic and anodic reactions through adsorption on steel surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the steel surface with and without inhibitor.

DLC coatings have been deposited onto substrate of STS 316L and Ti alloy using r.f. PACVD (plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition) with a mixture of $C_{6}H_{6}$ and $SiH_{4}$ as the process gases. Corrosion performance of DLC coatings was investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analysis (scanning electron microscopy). The electrolyte used in this test was a 0.89% NaCl solution of pH 7.4 at temperature $37^{\circ}C$. The porosity and protective efficiency of DLC coatings were obtained using potentiodynamic polarization test. Moreover, the delamination area and volume fraction of water uptake of DLC coatings as a function of immersion time were calculated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This study provides the reliable and quantitative data for assessment of the effect of substrate on corrosion performance of Si-DLC coatings. The results showed that Si-DLC coating on Ti alloy could improve corrosion resistance more than that on STS 316L in the simulated body fluid environment. This could be attributed to the formation of a dense and low-porosity coating, which impedes the penetration of water and ions.
The phenomena of high-voltage polarization and conductivity in oriented vinylidenefluoride and tetrafluoroethylene copolymer films have been investigated. It was shown that under certain electric fields, injection of carriers from the material of electrodes appears The barrier for holes injection in the copolymer was found to be lower than that for electrons. It results in more effective screening of the external field near the anode than near cathode. Electrones, ejected from cathode, creating negative charge by trapping on the surface. It is shown that the electrons injected from cathodes create a negative homocharge on the copolymer surface and then become captured on the surface shallow traps. Their nature has been studied by the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that these traps may consist of chemical defects in the form of new functional groups formed by reactions of surface macromolecules with sputtered atoms of aluminum. The asymmetric shape of hysteresis curves was explained by the difference in mobility of injected holes and electrons. These factors caused appearance of "non-closed" hysteresis curves for fluorine-containing polymer ferroelectrics. Hysteresis phenomena observed at low electric fields (below coercive ones) are to associate with the behavior of the domains localized in the ordered regions formed during secondary crystallization of copolymers.

Nitrogen vacancy center (NV center) in diamond has recently been appeared as a promising candidate for hyperpolarization applications due to its optical pumping property by laser. Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) has been used as a conventional method to obtain the resonance spectrum of NV centers. ODMR, however, has a shortcoming of sensitivity and a limitation of subjects, such that the degree of hyperpolarization can hardly be estimated, and that the spins other than NV centers are invisible. In contrast, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is known to proportionally reflect the degree of spin polarization. In this work, we successfully observed the optically-induced hyperpolarization of NV spins in diamond through CW-ESR spectroscopy with an X-band system. All the NV peaks were identified by calculating the eigenvalues of NV spin Hamiltonian. The intensities of NV peaks were enhanced over 240 times after optical pumping. The enhanced peaks corresponding to the transition from |ms=0> to |ms=-1> revealed inverted phases, while other peaks remained in-phase. The optically-induced hyperpolarization on NV spins can be a useful polarization source, leading to 13C nuclear hyperpolarization in diamond.
The inhibition performance of sodium gluconate (SG), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixture (SG/CTAB) on the corrosion behavior of ${\alpha}$-brass in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICPS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques. The results reveal that SG with 5ppm CTAB, noted SG/CTAB, acts as a good corrosion inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency reached 89% after 24 h immersion in sulfuric acid solution, but slightly decreased at higher temperatures. The polarization curves displayed that SG/CTAB acts as a cathodic-kind inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the addition of 5ppm CTAB to different concentrations of SG considerably increases the corrosion resistance of ${\alpha}$-brass. The SEM-EDS and ICPS analyses support the experimental results. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to understand the adsorption profiles of SG/CTAB on Cu(111) and Zn(111) surfaces.

The corrosion protection of AA2024 PPy coated samples doping with nanosized metal oxides, including $TiO_2$ and $CeO_2$ nanoparticles and $Nd_2O_3$ nanorods, during exposure to the solutions of 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ and 3.5% NaCl was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. The nanorods of $Nd_2O_3$ were synthesized by cathodic pulse electrochemical deposition technique. The barrier properties of the different PPy coatings containing nanosized metal oxides immersed in $H_2SO_4$ solution were ranked as follows: $Nd_2O_3$ > $TiO_2$ > $CeO_2$. Therefore, the $Nd_2O_3$ coating sample provided the highest corrosion protection at any time of immersion up to 72 hours after immersing in $H_2SO_4$ solution. On the other hand, the $CeO_2$ coating sample displayed the best anticorrosive properties among the other coating samples after immersion in NaCl solution up to 28 days. This is due to the inhibition effect of cerium ions on aluminum alloys at near-neutral solutions.

Type 304SS coatings were performed at 200$\square$ onto AISI 1045 carbon steel substrate using unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBMS) with an austenitic AISI 304 stainless steel (SS) target of 100mm diameter. The total deposition pressure in the active Ar gas was 2$\times$10$^{-3}$ Torr. Coatings were done at various target power densities and bias voltages. Chemical compositions of metallic elements of the coatings were measured by energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDS). The structure and the morphology of Type 304SS coatings were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion properties of the coated specimens were examined using electrochemical polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution. The porosity rate was obtained from a comparison of the dc polarization resistance of the uncoated and coated substrates. Scratch adhesion testing was used to compare the critical loads for different coatings. XRD results showed that the sputtered films exhibit a ferritic b.c.c. $\alpha$-phase. Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that all samples had much higher corrosion potential and better corrosion resistance than the bare steel substrate. The corrosion performance increased with increasing power density and the adhesion was enhanced at the bias voltage of -50V. An improvement in the corrosion resistance can be obtained with a better coating adhesion. Finally, an optimized deposition condition for corrosion protection was found as $40W/cm^2$ and -50V.
