To enhance the performance of a MEA (membrane electrode assembly) in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), optimum contents of Nafion ionomer as electrolyte in the 20 and 40 wt% Pt/C used in electrodes were examined. Variety characterization techniques were applied to examine optimum Nafion contents: cell performance test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). According to Pt wt% supported on carbon support, it has been observed that polarization, ohmic, and mass transfer resistances were changed so that the cell performance was significantly dependent on the content of Nafion ionomer. Optimum Nafion ionomer contents in the 20 wt% Pt/C and 40 wt% Pt/C were showed 35 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively. This is due to different surface area of the Pt/C catalyst, and formation of triple phase boundary seems to be affected by the Nafion contents.
The photodissociation dynamics of CH2I2 has been studied at 304 nm by state-selective photofragment translational spectroscopy. Velocity distributions, anisotropy parameters, and relative quantum yields are obtained for the ground I(2P3/2) and spin-orbit excited state I*(2P1/2) iodine atoms, which are produced from photodissociation of CH2I2 at this wavelength. These processes are found to occur via B1 ← A1 type electronic transitions. The quantum yield of I*(2P1/2) is determined to be 0.25, indicating that the formation of ground state iodine is clearly the favored dissociation channel in the 304 nm wavelength region. From the angular distribution of dissociation products, the anisotropy parameters are determined to be β(I)=0.4 for the I(2P3/2) and β(I*)=0.55 for the I*(2P1/2) which substantially differ from the limiting value of 1.13. The positive values of anisotropy parameter, however, show that the primary processes for I and I* formation channels proceed dominantly via a transition which is parallel to I-I axis. The above results are interpreted in terms of dual path formation of iodine atoms from two different excited states, i.e., a direct and an indirect dissociation via curve crossing between these states. The translational energy distributions of recoil fragments reveal that a large fraction of the available energy goes into the internal excitation of the CH2I photofragment; < Eint > /Eavl=0.80 and 0.82 for the I and I* formation channels, respectively. The quantitative analysis for the energy partitioning of available energy into the photofragments is used to compare the experimental results with the prediction of direct impulsive model for photodissociation dynamics.

In this study, the electrochemical impedance characteristics of CO2/H2O co-reduction to produce CO/H2 syngas were investigated in a low-temperature single cell. The effect of the operating conditions on the single-cell performance was evaluated at different feed concentrations and cell voltages, and the corresponding electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data were collected and analyzed. The Nyquist plots exhibited two semicircles with separated characteristic frequencies of approximately 1 kHz and tens of Hz. The high-frequency semicircles, which depend only on the catholyte concentration, could be correlated to the charge transfer processes in competitive CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions at the cathodes. The EIS characteristics of the CO2/H2O co-reduction single cell could be explained by the equivalent circuit suggested in this study. In this circuit, the cathodic mass transfer and anodic charge transfer processes are collectively represented by a parallel combination of resistance and a constant phase element to show low-frequency semicircles. Through nonlinear fitting using the equivalent circuit, the parameters for each electrochemical element, such as polarization resistances for high- and low-frequency processes, could be quantified as functions of feed concentration and cell voltage.

This work was performed to characterize the electrochemical behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy in neutral aqueous solutions where Cl-, SO42-, PO43-, and F- ions were present and pH was adjusted to 6 to exclude the contribution of H+ and OH- ions. Open-circuit potential (OCP) transient, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potnetiodynamic polarization curves were employed. The OCP value appeared to decrease in the order of F- > Cl- > SO42- > PO43- ions while corrosion current density increased in the same order. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data showed two capacitive arcs in all the solutions and one more inductive arc appeared in PO43--containing solution. By fitting of two capacitive arcs, capacitance of dense film (Cdf), resistance of porous film (Rpf) and double layer capacitance (Cdl) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) beneath the porous films were obtained. A simplified model in which various thicknesses and coverages of dense and porous films are assumed to be present on the AZ31 Mg alloy surface, is suggested to explain the effects of four different anions on the electrochemical behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy.
The surface of titanium (Ti) dental implants was modified by applying a zinc (Zn)-doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating. Initially, the Ti surfaces were etched with NaOH, followed by a hydrolysis co-condensation using tetrabutyl titanate (TBT, Ti(OC4H9)4) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2·6H2O), with ammonia water (NH3·H2O) acting as a hydroxide anion source. The morphology and chemical composition of the Zn-doped TiO2-coated Ti plates were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Synthesis temperatures were carefully adjusted to produce anatase Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with a bipyramidal structure and approximate sizes of 100 nm. Wettability tests and cell viability assays demonstrated the biomedical potential of these modified surfaces, which showed high biocompatibility with a survival rate of over 95 % (p < 0.05) and improved wettability. Corrosion resistance tests using potentiodynamic polarization reveal that Zn-TiO2-treated samples with an anatase crystal structure exhibited a lower corrosion current density and more noble corrosion potential compared to samples coated with a rutile structure. This method offers a scalable approach that could be adapted by the biomaterial industry to improve the functionality and longevity of various biomedical implants.
Ti and Ti-alloys have good biocompatibility, appropriate mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. However, the widely used Ti-6Al-4V is found to release toxic ions (Al and V) into the body, leading to undesirable long-term effects. Ti-6Al-4V has much higher elastic modulus (100 GPa) than cortical bone (20 GPa). Therefore, titanium alloys with low elastic modulus have been developed as biomaterials to minimize stress shielding. The electrochemical behavior of surface-modified and MC3T3-E1 cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloys with low elastic modulus have been investigated using various electrochemical methods. Surfaces of test samples were treated as follows: $0.3{\mu}m$ polished; $25{\mu}m$, $50{\mu}m$ and $125{\mu}m$ sandblasted. Specimen surfaces were cultured with MC3T3-E1 cells for 2 days. Average surface roughness ($R_a$) and morphology of specimens were determined using a surface profilometer, OM, and FE-SEM. Corrosion behavior was investigated using a potentiostat(EG&G PARSTAT 2273), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed (10 mHz to 100 kHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the Ti-30(Ta,Nb) alloys had a needle-like appearance. The $R_a$ of polished Ti-30Ta and Ti-30Nb alloys was lower than that of the sandblasted Ti alloy. Cultured cells displayed round shapes. For polished alloy samples, cells were well-cultured on all surfaces compared to sandblasted alloy samples. In sandblasted and cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloy, the pitting potential decreased and passive current density increased as $R_a$ increased. Anodic polarization curves of cell-cultured Ti alloys showed unstable behavior in the passive region compared to non-cell-cultured alloys. From impedance tests of sandblasted and cell-cultured alloys, the polarization resistance decreased as $R_a$ increased, whereas, $R_a$ for cell-cultured Ti alloys increased compared to non-cell-cultured Ti alloys.
An indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated spinel manganese oxide (${LiMn_2}{O_4}$, LMO) is prepared and its high-temperature ($55^{\circ}C$) cycle performance and rate capability are examined. A severe electrolyte decomposition and film deposition is observed on the un-coated ${LiMn_2}{O_4}$ cathode, which leads to a significant electrode polarization and capacity fading. Such an electrode polarization is, however, greatly reduced for the ITO-coated (> 2 mol%) LMO cathode, which leads to an improved cycle performance. This can be rationalized by a suppression of electrolyte decomposition, which is in turn indebted to a decrease in the direct contact area between LMO and electrolyte. The suppression of film deposition on the ITO-coated LMO cathode is confirmed by infra-red spectroscopy. The rate capability is also improved by the surface coating, which may be resulted from a suppression of resistive film deposition and high electric conductivity of ITO itself.

As an experimental study on the corrosion behavior of steel materials to which ATMS method using EIS was applied in concrete, immersion of Ca(OH)2 saturated aqueous solution and NaCl aqueous solution simulating the environment inside concrete The corrosion behavior was tested. The equivalent circuit was derived through the analysis of the Nyquist plot, and the interfacial resistance and the polarization resistance of the Ca(OH)2 aqueous solution were compared, and Al ATMS was the best interfacial resistance and Zn ATMS was the best polarization resistance. After burying ATMS steel material of cement mortar, the initial immersion impedance measurement value was the highest in the Zn ATMS test body in the impedance measurement by the immersion time by immersing it in the NaCl aqueous solution. Al ATMS test piece has the highest impedance and is highly reliable. This is because Al, which has a high ionization tendency, is continuously oxidized in a strong alkaline environment to form a film and protect the steel from permeation of chlorine ions.
The combined use of indium and polysorbate 20 (Tween 20) was considered as a new inhibition technique for zinc corrosion. Zn and Zn-In alloy coatings were prepared by electrodeposition and their morphology and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The corrosion inhibition effect of indium and Tween 20 on zinc was investigated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion inhibition efficiencies obtained from Tafel and EIS analyses are well in agreement. Zinc corrosion can be inhibited to some extent by the individual use of indium and Tween 20 and higher corrosion inhibition efficiency can be obtained by the combined use of indium and Tween 20.
Although there are various factors that threaten the security of ships, one of the most harmful is corrosion. It is not easy to find corroding areas and the status of corrosion, even though corrosion causes serious problems such as submergence and marine pollution as a result of leaking oil and polluted water. To monitor the corrosion of ships, non-destructive inspection, weight loss coupons, electrical resistance, linear polarization resistance, zero resistance ammeter, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been developed. However, these methods require much time to detect corrosion, and most are not appropriate for real time monitoring. Coating, sacrificial anode, and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) methods have been developed to control corrosion. The ICCP and sacrificial anode methods are the most popular ways to prevent ship corrosion. However, ICCP is only appropriate for the outside of a ship and cannot be used for complex structures such as ballast tanks because these are composed of many separate chambers. Sacrificial anodes have to be replaced periodically. This paper proposes an integrated corrosion monitoring and control system (ICMCS) that can detect corrosion in real time and is appropriate for complex structures such as ballast tanks. Because the system uses titanium for an anode, exhausted anodes do not need to be replaced.
