  • A novel passive TE/TM polarization mode converter is fabricated by using poled polymer waveguides. The optic axis of the poling induced waveguide is slowly rotated by using a slowly varying structure of poling electrodes. Thus the polarization conversion is achieved as the guided mode propagates through the waveguide. The proposed device is simulated by a full vectorial beam propagation method (VBPM) for anisotropic medium. For the rotation length of 1 mm, the TE polarization of the guided mode is successfully converted to the TM polarization with negligible loss. Based on the simulation results, we fabricated the polarization converter which is tested by using 1.3 $\mu$m laser diode. TE to TM mode conversion is observed with a polarization extinction ratio higher than 30 dB, and the excess loss is less than 1 dB. The polarization conversion is relatively insensitive to wavelength since the device contains no periodic structures. These devices are easier to fabricate than others containing periodic structures.

Polarization Insensitive CWDM Optical Demultiplexer Based on Polarization Splitter-rotator and Delayed Interferometric Optical Filter

  • We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate a polarization-diversified four-channel optical demultiplexer (DeMUX) comprising a hybrid mode conversion-type polarization splitter rotator (PSR) and delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical DeMUX for use in coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)-based optical interconnect applications. The Si wire-based device fabricated by a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible process exhibited nearly the same filter spectral response irrespective of the input polarization state under the PSR. The device had an extremely low insertion loss of <1.0 dB, polarization-dependent loss of <1.0 dB, and interchannel imbalance of <0.5 dB, suppressing unwanted wavelength and polarization crosstalk from neighboring channels of <-20 dB at each peak transmission channel grid.

  • An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch with rib waveguides is designed and fabricated by using the RIE method. POlarization-independent and wavelength-insensitive operation is demonstrated at the wavelengths of 1.3mm and 1.55mm, for the first time in electro-optic polymer-based devices. The rib waveguides have been designed to achieve good guiding properites for both TE and TM polarizations by controlling the etching depth as well as its aspect ratio. Especially theetching depth is controlled to change the guided mode profiles of the rib waveguide and thus to achieve an optimum coupling in the branch. The measured crosstalk is better than -16dB and the extincton ratio of each output port is greater than 16dB.

  • 본 논문에서는 측면연마 광섬유 결합기 구조에서 평면 도파로의 상부와 하부 클래딩의 열광학 효과를 이용하여 온도를 측정할 수 있는 편광 무의존 온도 센서를 제안하고 있다. 평면 도파로는 170$\mu\textrm{m}$ 두께의 현미경용 덮게 유리를 적용함으로서 급격한 온도 변화에 대해 도파로의 변형이 발생하지 않고, 비대칭적 평면 도파로 구조로 인한 편광 의존 손실을 최소화하기 시킬 수 있는 장점을 가진다. 제작된 소자의 편광 의존 손실은 0.3dB 이하로 측정되었다. 피측정체의 온도는 센서의 결합 파장 이동으로부터 계측되어진다. 평면 도파로의 상부와 하부 클래딩의 열광학 계수에 따른 온도 센서의 온도 민감도를 측정하였고, 상ㆍ하부 클래딩의 열광학 계수 변화로 온도 민감도를 제어할 수 있음을 보였다.

  • InP-based planar waveguide 48-channel concave grating demultiplexers with a channel spacing of 0.8 nm (100 GHz) are described and demonstrated. Polarization insensitivity and flattened spectral response are successfully achieved by the introduction of a polarization compensator and a two-focus grating, respectively. The fabricated device shows a polarization-dependent wavelength shift of less than 20 pm and a -3 dB spectral width of about 0.55 nm (68.75 GHz) over all channels.

  • We have investigated the optical characteristics of a directional coupler made of a side-polished polarization maintaining fiber in contact with a multimode planar waveguide and its applications as sensors. A device structural condition to achieve the polarization insensitive wavelength response has been presented. The fabricated devices revealed a superior immunity to the bending and the deformation of PM fibers in the input section. It is experimentally shown that the proposed device is suitable for a remote fiber sensor.

Broadband and Polarization Independent Terahertz Metamaterial Filters Using Metal-Dielectric-Metal Complementary Ring Structure

  • Broadband metal-dielectric-metal terahertz filters composed of complementary rings are designed and demonstrated. Four samples with different parameters were fabricated. Results measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy system show excellent agreement with simulations. Compared with the broadband filters reported before, the complementary ring structure in our design is insensitive to any polarization at normal incidence due to symmetry of the ring. Furthermore, the influence of structure parameters (such as period, radius, slot width, thickness and incidence angles) on the transmission characteristics has been investigated theoretically. The encouraging results afforded by designing of the filters could find applications in broadband sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

Investigation of Resonant Wavelength Separation in Microband-induced Fiber Gratings

  • In microband-induced fiber gratings, polarization properties and birefringence are investigated as a function of an applied line force. With the transmission curves associated with the maximum and minimum resonant wavelengths, the polarization-dependent behaviors are analyzed. By increasing the transverse line force, the resonance wavelength for an incident light polarized to the same direction of the force is blue-shifted as much as 0.69 nm/(N/cm) while that for the other polarization is insensitive. Using the resonant wavelength separation corresponding to the force variation, the transverse effective index change or modal birefringence variation is obtained. The ratio of modal birefringence versus applied line force is ${\Delta}B/{\Delta}f_x={\sim}8.38{\times}10^{-7}$.
